Chautala not serious on SYL: Ajit Singh

Sirsa, March 8
“The Satluj Yamuna link canal should be constructed immediately” said Union Agriculture Minister, Mr Ajit Singh, here today. While addressing a press conference at the local Surkhab Tourist Complex. He was on his way to Rajasthan to address a farmers’ gathering in nearby Nohar Constituency. He said it was a crucial issue, which needed immediate redressal. However, he felt that the appropriate time to resolve this issue was when there was government of the same party in power in both the states. In the farmers’ interest, it had now become crucial that the Union Government should take up water resources of the country in its own hand, he added. The Rashtriya Lok Dal chief announced that his party would organise a big rally in Jind on March 24 to raise the farmers’ issue of the state. Haryana unit RLD chief Swami Indervesh and Rajshthan unit RLD chief Natthi Singh were also present.

Mr Ajit Singh alleged that the Chief Minister of Haryana was not serious on the SYL issue. He indirectly hinted that otherwise the issue would have been solved when Punjab was under the rule of the Akali Dal. The immediate redressal of the issue was in the interest of both the parties.

Speaking on the fertiliser price hike, the Union Minister said all NDA partners had opposed this proposal as this affect the small farmers. He hoped that this issue would be resolved whenever NDA partners meet the Prime Minister. The Union Minister admitted that due to negligence on the part of bureaucracy, policies framed for the welfare of small farmers were not giving expected results. He wanted that accountability of the bureaucracy should be fixed for proper implementation of the policies. His ministry was contemplating to convert Krishi Vigyan Kendra based at district headquarters into service centres.

Even though the customary message by Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala on the occasion of International Women’s Day today waxed eloquent about the recent amendments by the state government to the Dowry Prohibition Act, the death of Kavita allegedly at the hands of her husband and his family members tells the real story of what actually happens when a girl is killed for dowry.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken note of the incident of Kavita’s unnatural death and in a letter (dated January 28) has asked the Superintendent of Police, Jind, to take “appropriate action” in this regard. The NHRC letter, a copy of which reached the complainant, Mr Surinder Kumar, earlier this week, also directed the SP to send an “action-taken report” within six weeks from the date of receipt of the letter. The SP of Jind, Mr M.S. Ahlawat, could not be contacted as he was not available on the phone.
