Kanwaljit alleges bid on life
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, February 10
The general secretary of the SAD and former Finance Minister, Capt Kanwaljit Singh, today alleged that the police tried to "eliminate" him shortly before the beginning of the " rasta roko" programme under his command at the Zirakpur chowk this morning.

The Akali leader said "a police Inspector, Mr Tehal Singh, ordered the police commando to shoot at me when I moved ahead to ask policemen why they were raining sticks on SAD workers". The commando immediately put his hand on the trigger and aiming the gun at me, pulled the trigger. "It was my good fortune that I reacted at once and pushed the barrel of the gun towards the sky, otherwise the bullet would have hit me in the chest", Capt Kanwaljit Singh asserted.

Commenting on the incident, the Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh, said he had ordered departmental action against the police commando who had fired a shot in the air as he had allegedly become nervous at Akali dharna site.

When told that Capt Kanwaljit Singh had alleged that an attempt was made to " kill" him, Capt Amarinder Singh said the Akali leaders were in the habit of telling lies.

"There is no truth in what Capt Kanwaljit Singh says", he added.
