PEC hostel to be renamed after Kalpana
Chandigarh, February 3
Himgiri Hostel in Punjab Engineering College, where Kalpana Chawla stayed while pursuing her course in aeronautical engineering, will now be named after her.
Announcing this during a condolence meeting at the college, the Punjab Governor Lieut-Gen J.F.R. Jacob, said the Kalpana Chawla Memorial Award for the best student of aeronautical engineering at the PEC, comprising Rs 25,000, a medal and certificate, has already been instituted.

The police says that 45-year-old Davinder Singh, whose body was found near Laxmi Narain Mandir on January 1, was stabbed to death by Sarabjit, 30-year-old son of his landlord, Mr C.S. Mandher, a retired Air Force officer. Davinder lived in a rented accommodation in the Phase VII (SAS Nagar) house of the retired Squadron Leader with his brother, Bhupinder.

Govt losing by imposing property tax?

The government seems to be the biggest loser with the imposition of property tax on commercial and government properties even as doubts persist on certain provisions of the bylaws passed by Municipal Corporation in its January 29 meeting.

In the multi-million scam on claiming income tax returns on the basis of fake TDS certificates by Chartered Accountant NK Garg, the Chandigarh Police has sought help of the Income Tax Department in probing the documents tagged in over 250 files seized from the office and residence of the CA.

3 killed in road mishaps

Three persons were killed in two road accidents in different parts of the city during the past 24 hours. A scooterist, Avtar Singh, was run over by a jeep (PB-12F-0669) near Ghatiwala village yesterday.

Science students may have a subject less
Plan to do away with environment studies

Panjab University is planning to discontinue environment studies as a compulsory subject in science classes at the undergraduate level. A recommendation in this regard has been made by a university committee that was constituted to look into the issue.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court today issued notice of motion on a petition filed by IAS officer N.K. Jain in an alleged rape case involving a resident of Shimla district. Jain is currently confined in Burail’s Model Jail.

Chartered accountant, N.K Garg, who had surrendered in a local court in connection with a scam related to income tax returns on the basis of fake TDS certificates, was today remanded in police custody.

Gas agency told to pay Rs 69,500 to resident

The Consumer Court has directed Bhatia Gas Centre, Industrial Area, and Proprietors Bhatia Gas Centers, Sector-22, to pay a compensation of Rs 69,500 to a city resident for supplying a defective gas cylinder.

Abhinav to participate in Sportland NRW Cup
Chandigarh, February 3
Abhinav Bindra will take part in the Sportland NRW Cup and the Air Rifle Competition to be held in Germany from March 15 to 23. The two competitions fielding top American and European shooters will witness a tough competition. Abhinav is at present in the USA for a two-year specialised training and preparation programme for the 2004 Athens Olympics.
