Chandigarh, January 27
Mr Om Prakash Chautala, Chief Minister of Haryana, today said that the report by the Justice Chahal Commission into the irregularities during the prohibition era, would be followed by the state government in toto.

While claiming that he had not seen the report yet and had no knowledge about a former Chief Minister, Mr Bansi Lal, being indicted in the report, Mr Chautala said his job was to take action on the basis of the report. He said that the state government had already set an example by implementing the report submitted by the Commissioner of Rohtak Division into the lynching of five men at Dulina. He added that similar action would be also taken by the government on the report submitted by the Chahal Commission.

Mr Chautala, who talked to reporters after attending a function at the Mansa Devi Complex here, said that the Panchkula police must be lauded for its role into the incident involving a Punjab bureaucrat and his superior officer’s wife.

Mr Chautala also alleged that Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda had embezzled Rs 75 lakh collected by him from people during the Kandela agitation. He said that he would order a probe into the embezzlement if Mr Bhajan Lal, who is now President of the Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee, requested him to recover the money from Mr Hooda. He claimed some Congressmen had already urged him institute a probe against Mr Hooda to recover the money.

Uttaranchal to be theme state at Surajkund mela
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, January 27
Uttaranchal will be the theme state of the 17th Surajkund mela opening in Faridabad district on February 1.

The Surajkund mela started as an annual event in 1987 to highlight the finest in handicraft and handloom traditions of the country. Another purpose of the mela was to identify languishing and lesser known craft and to provide a platform to craftsmen to sell their creations directly without facing exploitation from middlemen.

Two years later the tradition of selecting a state as the theme of the mela started. Rajasthan was the first theme state. Many of the master motifs of the past theme states still stand in the mela grounds as symbols of architectural traditions of the those states. If Rajasthan brought a Shekhawati Haveli and a gate to Surajkund in 1990, West Bengal erected Vishanupur Gate, with images of terracotta temples of that state.

This year, a miniature Badrinath temple entrance gate will be erected at the mela grounds to symbolise Uttaranchal, which will also make special catering arrangements at Food Plaza in the mela area. Over 50 craftspersons, each from the handicraft and handloom categories, shall represent the theme state.

According to a spokesman of Haryana Tourism, which is the co-organiser of the mela along with the Development Commissioners, Handicraft and Handlooms, over 350 craftspersons and weavers, many of them national award winners, have been invited to participate in the mela.
