And now a film on Devi Lal? Chandigarh, December 27 The latest proposal in this series is a film on the late Mr Devi Lal, being considered by the state government presumably for funding purposes. Yesterday Mr Chautala constituted a screening committee comprising Finance Minister, Sampat Singh, former Tripura Governor, Sultan Singh, Director of the Public Relations Department, Krishna Mohan and Officer on Special Duty to the Chief Minister, Vidya Dhar. The film, will present an account of Mr Devi Lal’s life and portray him as a messiah of farmers. Mr Devi Lal’s role in the struggle against emergency as well as the legacy left by him in the form of his politically astute eldest son, Mr Om Prakash Chautala, will also certainly be highlighted. Responding to queries made by TNS, officials here said that the film was being proposed to be made by a Rohtak-based producer. While officials did not divulge the name of the producer, they, however, emphasised that he had nothing to do with the ruling INLD. Even though the induction of two state government officers and one minister in the screening committee gives a clear signal about the government considering sponsoring the project, officials claimed that everything regarding the film was still at a nebulous stage and it was not clear who would fund the project in case the script was approved by the committee. A few other aspirants have also submitted similar scripts to the state government expecting funding for their projects. The screening committee would go through these scripts as well, it was learnt. Incidentally, Mr Devi Lal’s demise at a time when his son had become the Chief Minister of Haryana has also produced a large crop books on him. The state government has also showered largesse on such works by having them purchased for government libraries as well as for libraries in schools, colleges and so on. The Devi Lal Trust, headed by Mr Abhay Chautala, MLA and the youngest son of the Chief Minister, has also engaged itself in lionization of the departed founder of the INLD. The trust is publishing books on Mr Devi Lal and erecting his statues in various town and cities of Haryana. The state government has meanwhile busied itself in renaming various institutions of the state after Mr Devi Lal. Reacting to the state government’s steps, Mr Karan Singh Dalal, a firebrand Opposition MLA, said the people of Haryana were “not fools” that they would concede a statesmanlike status to Mr Devi Lal. “The state government has never disclosed the source of the huge money being spent for erecting these statues,” Mr Dalal said and alleged that funds earmarked for various central schemes were diverted for the construction of such statues. Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Leader of the opposition in the State Assembly, said that if Mr Devi Lal was really considered a messiah by the people of Haryana, he would not have lost three consecutive elections from Rohtak. “It would have been better if the money being spent for erecting the statues could be spent for welfare schemes of farmers,” he added. |
Keep vigil on dera activities: Pratap Rohtak, December 27 Mr Pratap Singh said at a press conference here today that the dera, having its branches all over the country, had been squandering money while refusing to accept donations from the people. Suspecting that the activities of the dera, situated in the home district of the Chief Minister, were being funded by foreign organisations, Mr Pratap Singh asserted that the Centre should order a probe into the activities of the dera. He said he would soon meet the Deputy Prime Minister to press for a vigil on the activities of the dera, which had come under a cloud following the murder of Sirsa-based journalist Ram Chander Chhattarpati a few months ago. Reiterating the demand for an inquiry by the CBI into the murder of Chhattarpati, Mr Pratap Singh alleged that the state government was trying to hush up the matter by dragging its feet on the CBI probe into the crime. YEAR ROUND UP-2002 AMBALA: Three fighter aircraft crash, a Pakistan spy being held, surrender of Shivani Bhatnagar case accused IG Ravi Kant Sharma and two persons being shot dead in broad-day light were the highlights of the year. The biggest tragedy of the year was the Jaguar crash in Anand Vihar in Dalipgarh village, bordering Ambala cantonment. The Jaguar crash snuffed out 13 lives. While two aircrashes had preceded the Jaguar crash on November 5, the extensive damage to life and property led to a major concern among Ambala residents. The first fighter aircraft crash took place on May 9. A Jaguar aircraft crashed while trying to take-off on the runway. Flying Officer S. Pallarwal was killed in the crash. The aircraft crashed a short distance away from the airfield fence. Incidentally, houses have been constructed close to the Air Force base. This incident was followed by another fighter aircraft, a MiG-21, crashing in Chor Mastpur village in Naggal area on September 9. The fighter pilot in this incident was fortunate to have bailed out in time and the aircraft crashed in a paddy field. The wreckage of the MiG-21 was eventually removed from the field by the help of a powerful helicopter. The wreckage retrieval proved to be a major challenge for the Air Force officials due to the slushy ground. Besides the aircraft crashes, Inspector General of Police, Prisons, Mr Ravi Kant Sharma, who is the main accused in the journalist Shivani Bhatnagar murder case, surrendered in a court in Ambala. The police had been on the look out for Mr Ravi Kant Sharma for quite some time and he surrendered on September 27 in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Ms Sarita Gupta. The surrender of Mr Ravi Kant Sharma in an Ambala court took the investigating authorities by surprise as it was believed that he would either surrender in a Panchkula court or in Delhi. After his surrender, Mr Ravi Kant Sharma became emotional when he met his daughter. He was taken to Ambala Central Jail from where he was shifted to Delhi. There were lows as well as highs for the police in Ambala. Two persons were shot dead in broad-daylight in Ambala. While one person was shot dead near GMN College in January, the second person was shot dead a couple of weeks later. Ramesh Duggal and Bindu are believed to be victims of a gang war. Another person, Raj Kumar, was shot at in his Mahesh Nagar area residence but he escaped with only a bullet injury. The high point of police investigation was the success in nabbing a Pakistan resident agent, who was in Ambala for the express purpose of carrying out espionage activity. On November 1, the police managed to nab Mohammad Salim, a resident of Faisalabad in Pakistan. He was arrested while he was clicking photographs of the Air Force base. Mohammad Salim had taken up residence in Ambala city while he had set up a dyeing shop in Ambala Sadar market. Mohammad Salim had taken on the name of Jagdeep and he claimed that he was from Dehradun. Police managed to zero in on Mohammad Salim after tracking down phone calls. The kidnapping of a lawyer and his subsequent return was a sensational incident. The lawyer, Akhil Gupta, was kidnapped by a gang which was trying to establish itself. The police managed to nab the gang members and they recovered arms and ammunition from them. Investigations had revealed that the kidnappers had kept the lawyer and another person, believed to be the son of a police official, in a house in Defence Colony. |
