3 students die in police firing
Gorakhpur, December 20
Three students were killed when the police opened fire today on a violent mob which took hostage the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police in Anandnagar town of Maharajgunj district of Uttar Pradesh while protesting the gunning down of a student leader. They also set ablaze a railway engine and several government vehicles. PTI

New SC judges
New Delhi, December 20
Chief Justice of the Andhra Pradesh High Court A.C. Lakshman and acting Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court G.B. Mathur were today sworn in as judges of the Supreme Court. Chief Justice of India V.N. Khare administered the oath of office to the new judges in his court in the presence of other judges of the Supreme Court and advocates. With this the strength of SC judges has gone up to 25 as against the sanctioned strength of 26. TNS
