Verification of birth, death certificates begins
Ludhiana, December 20
The district administration today started the verification of around 45 birth and death certificates, which were prepared by forging the signatures of SDM (East) Bhawna Garg besides violating rules.

Four-year-old crushed to death
Mob blocks traffic, injures driver of truck
Ludhiana, December 20
Tension gripped Kheri Jhameri village today morning when hundreds of residents blocked traffic over the death of a child, who was crushed under a truck near main chowk on the Jhameri-Alamgir road. 

MC Junior Engineer suspended
Ludhiana, December 20
The Punjab Government has placed Mr Surinder Sharma, a Junior Engineer in the horticulture wing of the Municipal Corporation, under suspension. According to orders issued by the Directorate of Local Government, Punjab, the suspended official has been directed to report at the Amritsar headquarters during the period of suspension.

Furnace units close for indefinite period
Mandi Gobindgarh, December 20
At a meeting of the local induction furnace industry chaired by its president Mahinder Paul Gupta in Gymkhana Club here on Thursday, it was decided to extend the ongoing three-day strike for indefinite period till the demands of the industry were met, said Mr Gupta while talking with the mediapersons here today.

Spate of thefts in factories
Ludhiana, December 20
The Focal Point police has registered a case of theft on the statement of Mr Vipan Chhabra, a resident of Tagore Nagar, who alleged that some burglars broke open the lock of his factory and took away electricity cable and aluminum scrap.

3 cinema-owners booked for defacing property
Ludhiana, December 20
The district police has decided to take action against cinema-owners for pasting posters of films on public or private property. In some cases, posters were found to be pasted even on the walls of religious places.

Robbery at petrol pump
Ludhiana, December 20
Three car-borne youths robbed a petrol station at gunpoint at Raikot late last evening and took away Rs 15,000 in cash. The police is yet to find a clue in the case.

Expo to focus on city
Ludhiana, December 20
The knitwear hub of India — Ludhiana — has been selected as the focus town for the Garment Technology Expo2003, to be held in Delhi from January 17 to 20. More than 600 companies from over 20 countries, including Japan, Germany, Italy, Spain, France, UK, Canada, USA , Korea and China, will participate in the event and showcase the latest state-of -the-art garment machinery.

Dhanda elected DBA president

Mr Harish Rai Dhanda has been elected president of the District Bar Association (DBA). He defeated his opponent Mr Hemant Kalia by a margin of 291 votes, here today.

Figure-conscious neglect health

Rachna, a 5.8” well built girl, is terribly hassled as she cannot find either jeans or tops her size in the market. The jeans are short and so are the tops. An exasperated Rachna has to buy clothes from men’s section. Similar problem is faced by girls overweight who are a bit as there in hardly any company that caters to the XL sizes. The market is flooded with attractive clothes both Indian and imported but these are only for girls with size 10 figures.

LDCA meeting
Ludhiana, December 20
Annual accounts of the Ludhiana District Cricket Association (LDCA) were adopted with a voice vote at an executive committee meeting of the association held at a hotel here on Thursday night. Twenty six out of a total 32 members attended the meeting, according to a press note issued here today by Mr Vinod Chitkara, honorary general secretary, LDCA.

3-day sports festival begins
Samrala, December 20
The ninth annual three-day sports festival of the Malwa Sports Association, Samrala, started here today in the Malwa College stadium with great pomp and show. The stadium and the pavilion were decorated tastefully with buntings, hoardings and flags.
