Kamagere, December 9
The police fired several rounds in the air and burst tear gas shells to quell a violent mob even as hundreds of people paid their last respects to former minister H. Nagappa, killed in the captivity of elusive brigand Veerappan.

The mob, while allowing well-wishers and locals, prevented politicians, the police and mediapersons from making it to the funeral site.

Among those who were prevented entry were Union Ministers Ananthkumar and Srinivasaprasad and B.N. Bache Gowda, P.G.R. Sindhia, M.P. Prakash and K.N. Nage Gowda. They were locked into a house by the protesters.

The body of Nagappa was brought to his native village after a post-mortem examination at Ramapura Government Hospital by a team of doctors led by Dr Shenoy from Mysore.

A top police official said only one bullet injury was found on the body of Nagappa, whose eyes were tied with cloth. Bullets have not been seized from the site where the highly decomposed body was recovered last evening.

According to the doctors the death could have occurred on December 4. In view of the decomposed state of the body, the type of weapon used to kill Nagappa could not be ascertained, the doctors said in the post-mortem report. The mob even torched the ambulance in which the body was brought to the village. However, the fire was extinguished immediately.

In the morning, the mob set fire to a police jeep, two police vans and a number of private vehicles, including some belonging to mediapersons from Mysore and Bangalore. Life came to a standstill in the entire Kollegal taluk following a bandh.

MYSORE: The villagers of Kanagere and family members of Nagappa rejected the offer of a state funeral extended by the state administration. Animal Husbandry Minister Mahadev, a relative of the slain leader, was, however, allowed to pay his respects to Nagappa.

The bereaved wife of the departed leader, Ms Parimala Nagappa, on Monday wrote to the AICC President, Ms Sonia Gandhi, blaming the ruling Congress government for failure to protect her husband. There were no sincere efforts to get her husband released. Agencies

New Delhi, December 9
Stating in the Lok Sabha that JD(U) leader H Nagappa must be the “last victim” of sandal wood smuggler Veerappan, the government today proposed constituting a joint front by the Centre and state governments of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to arrest the elusive forest brigand.

Soon after the issue was raised during zero hour by former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, BJP Chief Whip Vijay Kumar Malhotra said Karnataka Chief Minister S.M. Krishna was “responsible for Nagappa’s killing” as he did not make “serious efforts” to get the kidnapped leader released and sought Mr Krishna’s resignation amid strong protests from the Congress benches.

Sharing members’ concern over Nagappa’s killing, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pramod Mahajan assured the House that the Centre was prepared to provide the Army, the National Security Guards and other paramilitary forces and helicopters to put an end to the terror unleashed by Veerappan. The matter was briefly raised by J D (U) member H. Javare Gowda in the Rajya Sabha.

Describing Nagappa’s killing as “a tragic incident”, Mr Deve Gowda (JD-S) asked the Centre to take the initiative to involve Karnataka and Tamil Nadu governments and head a joint operation to put an end to Veerappan’s terror. Meanwhile, Karnataka Chief Minister Krishna vowed here to speed up operations against forest brigand Veerappan to end the “menace” unleashed by him in the wake of the death of JD (U) leader Nagappa in his captivity.
