Central Jail wall collapses; 1 killed
Ludhiana, December 9
Rahul (14) was killed when a 100-foot-wide and 16-foot-high outer wall of Central Jail collapsed here today. Residents of the area gathered on the spot, raised slogans against jail officials and staged a dharna.

Jaspal Bangar village tense again
District administration initiates inquiry
Jaspal Bangar (Ludhiana), December 9
Tension returned to Jaspal Bangar village near here today following a move by the district administration to conduct an on-the-spot investigation regarding the claims and the counter-claims over the possession of 120 kanals of agricultural land and to record the statements of both the parties.

Town mourns three deaths
Ahmedgarh, December 9
Most shopkeepers of the main market and Railway Road downed shutters here today to mourn the deaths of Jograj Singh ‘Joga’, son of a local trader; his wife of a few days, Rupinder Kaur, an NRI; and cousin Amrit, also an NRI. The bodies were cremated after being brought here today from Ajmer in Rajasthan.

Gurdwara men on fast outside DC’s office

Members of Gurdwara Shri Guru Singh Sabha and inhabitants of Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar organised a token fast outside Mini Secretariat here to protest against the failure of the police to identify the four persons who had kidnapped a former secretary of the Gurdwara Management Committee and trimmed his beard on November 16.

Beggars back in city
Ludhiana, December 9
Less than a month after the district police had arrested more than 300 beggars in a much-praised crackdown they have returned reappeared on the city roads. The local police had arrested at least 300 beggars from different parts of the city and booked them under the Prevention of Begging Act, 1971.

Fire Brigade buildings lying unused

Ludhiana, December 9
Buildings of the Fire Brigade, constructed at the cost of over Rs 4 crore, are lying unused. The buildings, having all modern facilities, were constructed two years back. The Municipal corporation authorities said the buildings required finishing touches and were likely to be completed, early next year.

‘SAD not to encourage rebellion in Cong’
Ludhiana, December 9
Capt Kanwaljit Singh, Senior Akali leader and former Finance Minister, said here today that his party was not interested in encouraging any rebellion within the Congress to topple the Capt Amarinder Singh government.

Crushing season begins in sugar mill
Ludhiana, December 9
Sugarcane-crushing season at Jagraon Co-operative Sugar Mills will begin tomorrow. Mr A.N. Singh Chauhan, managing director of the mill, said in a press note here today that sugarcane crushing would start after conclusion of Akhand Path of Sri Guru Granth Sahib. Sant Baba Sadhu Singh, Baba Lakha Singh and others would attend the function.

Science Fair-2002
Ludhiana, December 9
The Young Scientists Association, Gujranwala Guru Nanak Khalsa College, Ludhiana, organized Science Fair-2002 on December 9 in which a science exhibition, quiz contest and chart-making competition were organised. In the science exhibition the students displayed models pertaining to food, health and nutrition, energy, technology and environment, industry and environmental protection, transport and communication and technological aids.

A humorous collection of five short plays was presented in Guru Nanak Bhavan last evening under the aegis of the Ludhiana Sanskritik Samagam. Directed by versatile Sita Raina and written by Nicholas Kharkongar the short plays produced a lots of laughter from the audience

Local shuttlers win national title
Ludhiana, December 9
Local lads, Gurbaksh Singh of Speed Fund Academy, Ludhiana, and a class VII student of Green Land Senior Secondary School, and Raj Kumar, a student of class VIth in Alpine International School, made sorts of history by winning doubles title (u-13 years) in the 17th Mini and Sub-Junior National Badminton Championship held from December 1 to 7 at Patna.
