Dawood’s brother arrested New Delhi, December 9 A senior CBI official has already been rushed to Dubai after the agency was informed by Interpol that Ibrahim had been detained by the UAE authorities, agency sources said here today. Ibrahim was detained sometime last week and the agency was informed about the same last weekend. The detention of Ibrahim has been made on a “red corner notice” issued by Interpol on a request of the CBI against Anees, Dawood, their family members, Memon brothers and Abu Salem. The top official sent to Dubai yesterday is carrying a dossier on Anees and his brother Dawood Ibrahim containing among other things evidence to prove his Indian nationality, which would facilitate his extradition to India under the 1999 India-UAE extradition treaty. Anees Ibrahim is the operational in charge of the “D-company”. In fact, 27 “red corner notices” were issued in the names of various persons in the Bombay blast case, including Anees Ibrahim and his name also figured on the list of 20 given by New Delhi to Islamabad for extradition. In the series of devastating blasts in Bombay in 1993 about 300 persons were killed, over 1,000 were injured and property worth over Rs 1 crore were damaged. Soon after the incident, Anees, Dawood and their family members fled India. Abu Salem and his wife Monica Bedi were arrested in Lisbon in August this year and the Indian Government is trying for their extradition. Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani may make a statement on the detention of Anees Ibrahim in Parliament, the sources said. The don was held only three days after he had returned to the United Arab Emirates from Pakistan on the basis of the documents handed over to the Dubai police by the CBI and the pending Interpol “red corner notice” issued against him, official sources said. The sources said the Dubai authorities passed on the information to the Indian authorities only after initial confirmation that he was the same person wanted by India in connection with the serial bomb blasts in Mumbai in 1993. Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani, campaigning in Gujarat, expressed the hope that the CBI and the Indian Embassy in Dubai would be able to bring him to India to stand trial. |
