Al-Badr commander killed

Srinagar, October 19
A self-styled district commander of Pakistan-based Al-Badr outfit and four security personnel were among nine persons killed in Jammu and Kashmir overnight.

An official spokesman said an encounter took place between militants and the security forces at Chak-e-Arshalan in Bandipora last night during which Al-Badr commander Shaheen was killed.

An SPO also lost his life in the clash, he said.

One AK rifle, three magazines, 90 rounds and one wireless set were recovered from the slain militant, who was involved in a number of militancy-related incidents in North Kashmir.

A police constable was killed and 14 others, including seven BSF jawans were wounded in the incident.

The injured were admitted to different hospitals.

Official sources said militants detonated a powerful IED at a busy market at Sopore, about 50 km from here in Baramula district.

A BSF vehicle was completely damaged in the blast, sources said, adding that about 12 shops were also damaged.

An Army jawan was injured when militants attacked a column of 9 Rashtriya Rifles at Nandimarg village in South Kashmir last night. Militants later managed to escape.

An encounter took place between militants and security forces at Lopara Dachan last night during which a security jawan lost his life and a Village Defence Committee (VDC) member and a civilian were injured.

Another security jawan was killed in yet another encounter with militants at Masjid Pura Bhim.

Jammu: A BSF jawan was killed and another wounded when militants ambushed a BSF party in Udhampur district of Jammu division on Saturday.

Militants attacked the party in the wee hours when they were returning to Bhimdasa post in the Gool area after night patrolling, a BSF spokesman said here.

Pak troops to remain along LoC

Islamabad, October 19
Pakistan will continue to have its troops along the Line of Control (LoC) with India and also along the working boundary. Pakistan daily Dawn quoted the Director-General, Inter-Services Public Relations of Pakistan, Major-Gen Rashid Qureshi, as saying:

“The LoC and the working boundary are the areas where India has massive deployment of troops on a permanent basis and we will not remove our troops from there”.

“Now facing those are Pakistani troops which are also there on a permanent basis,” he added. UNI

Pak-N Korea nuke nexus

The Vajpayee government is going to take up with major foreign powers the reports of Pakistan aiding North Korea in its secret nuclear weapons programme and helping Pyongyang become an unannounced nuke power.

Well-placed sources said here tonight that the government had decided to raise the issue both politically and diplomatically. At the diplomatic level, the Ministry of External Affairs is going to contact ambassadors of countries like the USA, UK, France, Russia, Germany and Australia.
