Probe ordered into Solapur violence

Mumbai, October 12
A magisterial inquiry has been ordered into yesterday’s violence in Solapur in Maharashtra, even as the toll today went up to seven dead and 115 injured.

Several areas of the city witnessed fresh bouts of violence again this morning when mobs indulged in stone throwing and arson in which 10-12 shops were set afire due to which the police had to fire 20 rounds. One person was reportedly injured in the melee, according to the Solapur police.

In a telephonic conversation with UNI here today, Minister of State for Home Manikrao Thakre, who is camping in Solapur, said of the seven, five were killed in the subsequent police firing while two had died in stabbing incidents. The mob was yesterday protesting against the recent remarks made against Muslims by US Baptist Minister Jerry Falwel in New York in a television interview.

Mr Thakre said the situation in Solapur was tense but under control.

The minister said 250 persons had been arrested so far and curfew had been extended till Sunday morning, subject to any change in the situation.

Security had been tightened in the city with the deployment of six SRP platoons and one RPF contingent, he added.

Meanwhile, the BJP here today blamed the Congress-led government in Maharashtra for the violence and alleged that there was a “deep-rooted conspiracy” to fan communal tension in the state.

The rioters attacked a former BJP MLA and stabbed a Shiv Sainik in Solapur, BJP spokesperson Prakash Jawdekar alleged.

Demanding that the Army be deployed to control the situation and a probe be conducted into the incident, Mr Jawdekar asked, “How was the reaction of a reported statement made in the USA felt only in Maharashtra?”

He said Muslims in other parts of the world had not taken cognizance of the reported remarks. UNI

Murder case: SC sets aside HC ruling
N.D.Sharma

Bhopal, October 12
A Dalit youth was prosecuted for the murder of two sisters in Shajapur and sentenced to death by the Sessions Judge. The prosecution story was found plausible by the Indore Bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, which altered the death sentence to life imprisonment.

However, the Supreme Court last month acquitted the youth, casting aspersions on the manner in which the prosecution had suppressed evidence related to the case. It also criticised the Sessions Court and the High Court for shutting their eyes to “glaring infirmities and illegalities” as well as patent errors, “resulting in serious and grave miscarriage of justice”.

Dr Ram Avatar Mudgil, a dental practitioner residing in government quarters at Shajapur, had gone for a morning walk with his wife on April 8,1999. On their return, the Mudgils found their two daughters, Priti and Nidhi, murdered with multiple injuries on their bodies. The police arrested Ashish Batham, an employee of a state government undertaking, who once lived in the neighbourhood of the Mudgils but had since been transferred to Bhopal.

Ashish was charged under Sections 302 and 499 of the IPC. The prosecution said Ashish was in love with Priti, the elder daughter, but her parents had refused to allow their marriage, as Ashish did not belong to their caste.

The Sessions Judge of Shajapur sentenced Ashish to death and life imprisonment for the two offences. The Indore Bench of the High Court upheld the conviction under Sections 302 and 499 but reduced the death sentence to life imprisonment, both sentences to run concurrently.

An appeal against the High Court judgement was allowed by a Division Bench of the Supreme Court, comprising Mr Justice Doraiswamy Raju and Mr Justice Shivraj V. Patil, which set aside the judgements of the “courts below” and acquitted Ashish.

Patel foundation: BJP calls it Sonia stunt
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, October 12
The BJP today criticised Congress President Sonia Gandhi, saying that she was trying to cash in on the name of Sardar Patel in view of the coming Gujarat Assembly elections.

Reacting sharply to Ms Gandhi’s letter to Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee in which she urged him to establish a foundation after Sardar Patel, BJP spokesman Mukhtar Naqvi said it was nothing else but “political opportunism” at its best.

The Congress leader was glorifying Sardar Patel to garner votes in the Gujarat elections, Mr Naqvi pointed out.

In a statement, Mr Naqvi said it was ironical that the party which always opposed the ideology and principles of Sardar Patel, was suddenly concerned about him.

“How come the Congress President, who has once described Gujarat as the land of Godse, is reminded that it is the land of Patel,” he asked.

The Congress should know that the Central Government had started work on the Patel foundation two years ago, he said.

Mr Naqvi also blamed the Congress for inciting communal passions in various parts of the country. “The escalation in communal incidents in Congress-ruled states is a testimony of this fact,” he pointed out.

He said the Congress-ruled states were encouraging fundamentalist anti-social elements in the name of “so-called’’ secularism.

Centre ‘neglecting’ Cong-ruled states

Jhunjhunu, October 12
Congress President Sonia Gandhi today charged the Centre with discriminating against Congress-ruled states and said the issue “would be raised in the next session of Parliament.’’

“We met the Prime Minister last month seeking relief for the drought-hit regions. But there was no response,’’ Ms Gandhi said here at the conclusion of her two-day visit to the drought-hit regions of Rajasthan.

She said despite the arrests of Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh and Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Ajit Jogi during their agitation, no help was rendered to the states by the Centre.

“The issue will be raised in the next session of Parliament to mount pressure on the Centre,’’ she added.

Covering the 600-km stretch of the seven districts in the state, she said the situation in the state was very bad and people were in distress.

Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, who accompanied Ms Gandhi, said the Centre had been asked to provide liberal assistance to the state. UNI

Punjabis to hold conference on terror in USA
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, October 12
Eminent Punjabis from all over the world will assemble in New York next month for the first anti-terror conference being organised there by the Punjabis with a view to erase the aftermath of the September 11 disaster last year.

It would be for the first time that such a conference would be held in the USA by Punjabis from different parts of the world, the International Council of Punjabis said today.

“‘The endeavours of Punjabis to erase the aftermath of the September 11 disaster’ will not only voice their experiences with terrorism, but will provide a platform to rally behind the USA in the global fight against terror,” ICP General Secretary Pushpinder Singh said.

Union Minister and Shiromani Akali Dal Secretary-General Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa was also likely to accompany the ICP delegation of around 100 Punjabis from India, led by its President Manjit Singh, to New York, Mr Pushpinder Singh added.

Kolkata, October 12
The two-day CPM politburo meeting which began in the city on Thursday, endorsed the decision of the Bengal leadership to allow party leaders and workers to contact masses through the pujas and other religious festivals, which for long, was banned.

The step is significant on the eve of the state’s forthcoming panchayat elections.

Mr Anil Biswas, party secretary, has advised the party men to meet people at the pandals, talk to them and try to win their support. The ministers, MPs and MLAs and other leaders in the party have also been allowed to open the community pujas.

Accordingly, the ministers like Mr Subhas Chakraborty (Transport and Sports), Mr Asoke Bhattacharyya (CMDA), Mr Susanta Ghosh (State Minister for Health), Mr Jogesh Burman( Forest) and some other MPs and MLAs will be formally opening community pujas. The Chief Minister, Mr Buddhadev Bhattacharjee, the Finance Minister, Dr Asim Dasgupta, the Health Minister, Dr Suryakanto Mishra, and the Industries Minister, Mr Nirupam Sen, have also been invited by several puja committees.

A former Chief Minister, Mr Basu, has however, turned down all invitations.

But for the Congress, the Trinamool Congress and others, the pujas have always been an easy method for developing people’s contact. This time, the WBPCC(l) President, Mr Pranab Mukherjee, Mr Somen Mitra, Mr Pradip Bhattacharyya and the Trinamool leaders Ms Mamata Banerjee, Mr Saugata Roy, Mr Pankaj Banerjee and others will be busy in the pujas in their respective localities.

The Trinamool Congress MP, Mr Sudip Bandopadhyya has invited the Union Minister, Mr Pramob Mahajan to inaugurate two pujas in his locality.
