Community resource centres for 7 dists: CM

The Punjab Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh, today announced the setting up of Community Resource Centres in seven districts of the state and directed the Municipal Corporation Ludhiana to provide space for erecting beat boxes for the police beat officers in the city.

Forum orders refund to power consumer

The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has ruled that an amount of Rs 27,020, recovered by the Punjab State Electricity Board from its consumer, Mr Rattan Singh, a resident of Khanna, was not sustainable.

ASI arrested on graft charges

The Ludhiana Vigilance Bureau today claimed to have arrested an ASI, Labh Singh, of the Punjab police, posted at Jodhan police post in Jagraon police district, on corruption charges. The cop was caught red-handed from the retiring room of his office while accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000 from a complainant to get his work done.

73rd Amendment: employees to step up agitation
Ludhiana, October 12
A convention of government employees, convened by the Democratic Employees Front today resolved to step up stir against the 73rd Constitutional Amendment under which the process for scrapping 29 government departments dealing with social and community welfare, was initiated by the government.

Discussions for solid waste disposal project on
Ludhiana, October 12
As another step towards the scientific handling of solid waste, senior officials of Municipal Corporation held detailed discussions with representatives of a global company, M/s Onyx, here on Thursday. The company officials also made a presentation detailing their expertise in the disposal of solid waste in the metropolitan city of Chennai and 40 other locations in different parts of the world.

Industry resents govt scheme
Ludhiana, October 12
The Fastener Manufacturers Association has opposed the move of the Punjab Small Industries and Export Corporation to allot residential plots in the Industrial Focal Point Phase-V, Ludhiana. The association said while on the one hand the government was insisting on shifting industrial units from residential areas due to their hazardous nature, on the other it was planning to build a residential area in the heart of the industrial complex.

Canada varsity award for Aulakh
Ludhiana, October 12
Dr Milkha Singh Aulakh, Senior Soil Scientist, Punjab Agricultural University, is the first Indian and perhaps the first alumnus outside North America to be bestowed with the ‘2002 Alumni Honour Award’ by the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Canada. An individual can get the award only once in a lifetime.

‘Produce standard cattle feed’

The Director, Dairy Development, Punjab, Dr Parmjit Singh, has warned owners of cattle feed mills against manufacturing the feed without a proper licence. He was speaking at a conference organised by the manufacturing at the Golden Grain Club here yesterday.

Protect wildlife, students told

A meeting of the People For Animals’ Karuna Club comprising students of USPC Jain Public School was held on the school premises today. The meeting was addressed by the Chief Adviser to the PFA Ludhiana, Mr Radhey Sham Gupta, and president, Dr Sandeep K. Jain. Mr Gupta told the students that the activities of the club would be monitored regularly and the PFA would provide them with the latest information and literature regarding the welfare of animals and wildlife.

PU sets up two evaluation centres
Ludhiana, October 12
Panjab University Chandigarh has set up two centres in Ludhiana to evaluate the scripts of the examination held in September, 2002, of the compartment cases. Urgency was caused because of poor turnout of the examiners at Chandigarh centres where the evaluation had started from October 3, 2002.

PAU NCC cadets win drill contest

A combined annual training camp of the NCC was held from September 29 to October 10 at Doraha. Twentythree cadets from the College of Agriculture, PAU, participated in the camp.

Mandi Gobindgarh, October 12
Gobindgarh Public School organised a mega fancy dress competition at the school auditorium here today. Seventy participants from different sections of the pre-primary wing were dressed up colourfully for the show.

The Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, the world body of orthopaedic surgeon, representing about 150 countries has started a project to help the orthopaedic surgeons from all over the world, especially from the developing countries, to solve complex clinical problems.

Government Barjindra College Bathinda, won Punjabi University Volleyball Championship which concluded at the local Shanti Tara College today, one day later than the scheduled closing day.
