PU student council to have direct elections
Chandigarh, September 19
Putting to rest anxiety among campus students, Panjab University today decided to conduct direct elections to the Panjab University Campus Students Council in the current academic session. The university also decided to conduct direct elections to the student bodies in affiliated colleges located in the city.

PGI Director may get more fiscal powers
Chandigarh, September 19
With the rent of commercial sites within the PGI complex ranging from Rs 800 to Rs 8.36 lakh per month, the issue of delegation of full powers by the Standing Finance Committee to the Director for approval of tenders will be taken up at the meeting, so as to avoid loss of revenue to the institute.

Kayak’s body comes up on Sukhna surface

The worst fears of Mr Balbir Singh — father of 19-year-old kayak Ravi Ankit of the Central Protection Police Force who went missing in the Sukhna Lake on Tuesday — came true this morning when his son’s body was found floating on the water at about 5.45 am.

Minor reshuffle of UT officials

The Chandigarh Administration today ordered a minor re-shuffle of middle-level officials and appointed Mrs Madhvi Kataria as Subdivisional Magistrate, south replacing Mr H. S. Kandola of this additional charge.

Silver doors at Mansa Devi shrine before Navratras
Panchkula, September 19
The Sri Mata Mansa Devi Shrine Board proposes to replace wooden doors of sanctum sanctorum of the shrine with silver carved doors before the onset of Navratras in October. Sources inform that negotiations are under way with silver craftsmen from Jaipur and Amritsar for carrying out the work on two silver doors.

A Parliamentary Standing Committee of the Ministry of Home Affairs will start its two- day visit to Chandigarh from Monday morning. This is an inspection-cum-study tour for the MPs. One of the witnesses in the Beant Singh assassination case today turned hostile and did not recognise the accused in the case at a special court room in Burail Jail. While giving statement before the UT District and Sessions Judge, Mr H.S. Bhalla, the witness, Amarjit Kaur, said she did not know Navjot Singh, one of the accused in the case.
