Pramod to file defamation suit
BJP rallies behind minister
New Delhi, August 16
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pramod Mahajan today ruled out his resignation on the Shivani Bhatnagar murder issue and said Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee had told him “not to worry.” Mr Mahajan told reporters here that Mr Vajpayee called him late last night and told him “you don’t have to worry.”

Speculation over the timing of the Assembly poll in Gujarat was put to rest today with the Election Commission making it clear that it would consider framing a suitable schedule only in November or December.

Kashmir panel meets Shabir
Centre ready for talks with J&K leaders
Srinagar, August 16
With just a week left for the notification of the Assembly poll in Jammu and Kashmir, the committee headed by Mr Ram Jethmalani today launched its key initiative holding talks with senior separatist leader Shabir Ahmed Shah and declaring the Centre was ready to hold dialogue with J and K leadership “at any place and at any time”. Nod to poll reform ordinance
New Delhi, August 16
The Union Cabinet today approved the promulgation of an ordinance on electoral reforms seeking to curb criminalisation of politics. An official spokesperson said at the meeting chaired by Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, the Union Cabinet approved the proposal to amend the Act by promulgating the ordinance under Article 123 of the Constitution.

Sidhu’s resignation rejected
Chandigarh, August 16
The Punjab Government has rejected the resignation of suspended PPSC Chairman, Ravinder Pal Singh Sidhu. Informed official sources said “the state government wanted that Sidhu should be removed from office by ordering his dismissal”.

30 killed in Poonch mishap
Jammu, August 16
At least 30 persons, including women, were killed and 10 others wounded when their Matador rolled down into the Dangli Nullah in Poonch today. According to the police, 28 bodies had been recovered so far.

Zaffarwal acquitted in passport case
Amritsar, August 16
Wassan Singh Zaffarwal, chief of the Khalistan Commando Force, was today acquitted by the court of Mr Jasbir Singh Kang, Judicial Magistrate (First Class), Ajnala, due to lack of evidence. He was acquitted in the case relating to his entry in India on forged documents and a fake passport.

The Union Railway Minister, Mr Nitish Kumar, while announcing that the Centre would bring a supplementary budget in the coming winter session to arrange funds for various safety measures and construction of railway overbridges (ROB) and underbridges (RUB) said the Railway authorities had started exploring non-traditional sources to enhance its income to meet its liabilities.
