Meeting on Assembly poll likely today
New Delhi, August 11
The full Election Commission consisting of Chief Election Commissioner J. M. Lyngdoh and Election Commissioners T. S. Krishnamurthy and B. B. Tandon returned here today after a tour of riot-hit Gujarat to assess the state’s preparedness to hold free-and-fair Assembly elections. “We will take a decision in a few days’ time,” Mr Lyngdoh said.

UP gives 500 MW to Punjab
Ropar, August 11
Responding to Punjab’s request, the Uttar Pradesh Government today gave its share of 500-MW (70 lakh units) power from the Central pool to Punjab, providing a relief, especially to the agriculture sector, whose supply was subsequently increased in the state today.

Heavy rain in region
Shimla, August 11
Monsoon remained active in Himachal Pradesh as many parts in the state experienced moderate to heavy rain since last night, triggering landslides. Shimla and the surrounding areas were lashed by moderate rain, bringing a sharp fall in the temperature. A dense fog enveloped the town, reducing visibility considerably and forcing vehicular traffic to move at a snail’s pace.

Petronet to lay Kandla-Bathinda line
Mumbai, August 11
In order to save its Rs 383 crore Vadinar-Kandla product pipeline in Gujarat from redundancy, Petronet India Ltd has decided to construct a separate 1,443 km long petroleum product pipeline from Kandla to Bathinda, Punjab.

The Patiala Vigilance Police conducted raids at many places in Chandigarh last night, including the residences of former PCS, DSP and other officers, who had got selected by bribing the then PPSC Chairman Ravinderpal Singh Sidhu and arrested former PCS officer Purshottam Singh Sodhi.

Madhu, wife of Mr Ravi Kant Sharma, I-G (Prisons), Haryana, has sought an appointment with Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee. Sources close to the Sharmas say Madhu wants to apprise Mr Vajpayee of the conspiracy hatched by “somebody” to frame her husband in the case.

Brown cloud hampers monsoon
London, August 11
A 3 km brown cloud hanging over South Asia could have thrown the monsoon rains off course, says a major study by the United Nations Environmental Programme. “The global models used in the report suggest the haze may reduce precipitation over northwest India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, western China and neighbouring western central Asian region by between 20 and 40 per cent,” the report says.
