Heavy rain in region

Shimla, August 11
Monsoon remained active in Himachal Pradesh as many parts in the state experienced moderate to heavy rain since last night, triggering landslides.

Shimla and the surrounding areas were lashed by moderate rain, bringing a sharp fall in the temperature. A dense fog enveloped the town, reducing visibility considerably and forcing vehicular traffic to move at a snail’s pace.

The Shimla-Kalka and Shimla-Mandi highways and the 320-km Hindustan-Tibet road also remained shrouded in fog at certain points. However, traffic plied uninterruptedly.

Upper areas of Shimla district, including Wildflower Hall, Kufri, Naldehra and Narkanda also had rain.

In Chandigarh, monsoon arrived in full blast only today showering 69 mm of rainfall in little under four hours, even as reports of heavy rain were also received from some places in Punjab and Haryana.

Rain lashed Chandigarh and its adjoining areas in the wee hours today. Many lowlying areas were left water-logged and the downpour also caused disruptions and breakdowns in the power system in many sectors.

Ever since the onset of monsoon, Chandigarh received showers on many occasions, but none of them was so heavy and most of them failed to last beyond half hour, according to the Met office here.

In Haryana, Ambala was lashed by heavy rain this morning lasting over two hours. Many areas in the town were left waterlogged.

Many Punjab towns were also lashed by showers. The Met office said Ludhiana had recorded a heavy rainfall at 50 mm until this morning. Patiala received 1.3 mm of rainfall while the Nangal Dam area was lashed by 5 mm of rainfall.

According to the Met office, an upper air cyclonic circulation lies over south Punjab and adjoining north Haryana and another such circulation was active over Himachal Pradesh and Uttaranchal.

It said moderate to heavy rain could be expected at many places in Himachal and at a few places in Punjab and Haryana during the next 48 hours. UNI, PTI

At least 33 persons were feared killed and several houses damaged in a cloudburst in three villages in Tehri district of Uttaranchal in the wee hours of today, official sources said.

Several cattleheads perished in the cloudburst that triggered landslides in Kot, Marwari and Medh villages, the sources said.

Uttaranchal Chief Secretary Madhukar Gupta said he had received information about 12 deaths, adding that the Air Force had been put on alert and the Army asked to stand by to meet any situation.

DIG, Uttaranchal Anil K. Raturi, said 11 persons were swept away by flood waters in Marwari village of the Budha Kedar area of Tehri while three others were killed in Kot Bishan village. Two persons were killed in Meda village of the area, he added.
