Board’s move on temples evokes protest
K.G. Dutt

Pehowa, July 7
Religious as well as social organisations of this puranic age town are up in arms against the move of the Kurukshetra Development Board (KDB) to takeover the historic and religious temples located here. They have been joined by brahmin sabhas and teerath purohit sabhas of the town as well as of Kurukshetra.

Mr K.K. Kaushik a former president of the Brahmin and Teerath Sudhar Sabha, Kurukshetra, has submitted a petition to the Governor, who is the chairman of the board, urging him not to allow the KDB to go ahead with its plans terming the move as “ill-intentioned”. The move, which would give a blow to the age-old system of worship continuing in these temples, has evoked strong opinion from the Naga Sanyasi Sadhu Akharas, especially the Maha Nirvani Akhara which has branches all over the country.

The akhara, which owes its allegiance to the Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad of the Dasnami Sadhu Akharas, manages hundreds of temples in the country. Its general secretary, Mahant Ganga Puri, told The Tribune today that the akhara which had managed historic temples like the Sthaneshwar Temple, Sarveshwar Mahadev Temple, Pashupati Nath and Sangmeshwar Mahadev Temples at Kurukshetra and Pehowa would not hesitate from launching an all-India level agitation against the move. The mahant said such a step by the KDB would give a severe blow to the traditions of worship and its methodology being adopted in these temples. He said the Naga sadhus had no personal stakes but they would fight for the value system of Hinduism. He alleged that the KDB officials did not understand the historicity of these temples but the board seems to be keen to get hold of the income of these puranic age temples in the name of providing them a modern look.

Enquiries made by this correspondent revealed that late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, during a visit to the Sthaneshwar Mahadev Temple in 1982, had advised its Mahant Parbhat Puri “not to destroy the antiquity of the temple” while giving it a modern look. Mahant Parbhat Puri, then, was engaged in the renovation of the temple. The Lord Shiva Lingam at the Sthaneshwar Temple site is believed to be the first on this earth as per the Hindu mythological texts.

Another temple, Sarveshwar Mahadev, situated in Braham Sarovar, believed to be the place where Kunti, mother of Pandavas, prayed to Lord Shiva was built by Baba Sharavan Nath over 400 years ago. Mahant Shyam Narayan Giri, who manages this temple, and the historic Kaurav-Pandav temple in Dera Baba Sharavan Nath, said even late Gulzari Lal Nanda, who was the founder of the KDB, and its first Chairman, did not disturb its ownership but only suggested to the Maha Nirvani Akhara to renovate the temple to fit it in the new architectural design of Braham Sarovar.

According to these religious organisations, while modernising these historic places in Kurukshetra, the KDB paid scant respect to the historicity of these places. For instance, the area of the original Braham Sarovar had been nearly halved while giving it a new look. Similarly, the ancient Sannihit tank, once believed to be the abode of Lord Vishnu, keeping its size in view, but today it is a small-sized tank where dirt abounds.

The Sannihit tank near the Dukha Banjeneshwar Temple where Rishi Dadichi had offered his bones to Lord Indira for making an arrow and bow, is full of dirt and filth despite the control of the temple being under the KDB.

A deputation of the Teerath Sudhar Sabha and the all-India Teerath Purohit Sabha also met the Transport Minister, Mr Ashok Arora, yesterday in this regard. It was pointed out that the age-old temples on the banks of Sannihit were being managed by the teerath purohits and no pilgrim had ever conveyed its resentment to the sabha or the KDB against the purohits. The religious organisations would welcome any step for the renovation of the tanks and its surroundings by the KDB but would not allow any tinkering with the methodology of worship or with the ownership and management of the temples. The KDB, if it was keen for development should revive the eight Koshi Yatra of Kurukshetra to give a new meaning to this ancient place, the deputation said.

Besides the Supreme Court in a judgement had described the temples owned by the Maha Nirvani Akhara and the Naga Sadhus as “their personal places of worship where they may or may not allow anybody to worship.” The judgement was given on a petition filed by the Maha Nirvani Akhara.

Chandigarh, July 7
Amandeep Kaur (14) and Jeetendra Singh (11) were among those killed by Islamic militants at Kaluchak in Jammu on May 14.

Their fault was that their father was an Army man deployed to fight terrorists.

Subedar Attar Singh, the unfortunate father of Amandeep and Jeetendra, was on patrol duty when he received a message that terrorists had attacked the residential quarters of Army personnel at Kaluchak.

By the time Attar Singh returned home, all was over. The rooms, the verandah were splattered with blood.

The children were sleeping when they were hit by bullets. They were certified as “found dead” by the hospital authorities. Another jawan, Subedar Major Manjit Singh’s family was wiped out by the terrorists in the same incident.

Now Attar Singh, who hails from Nauala village of Ambala district, is demanding compensation for his children. “They would not have been killed by terrorists had they not been children of an Army man”, he argues. “If the Haryana government could give Rs 10 lakh to each of the families of soldiers killed in Kargil, we can be given at least Rs 5 lakh for each of the children lost”, he argues.

Attar Singh has met the Governor of Haryana, Babu Parmanand, regarding his demand and has been assured of support. He is being backed by Dr Viresh Sandilya, chief of the Haryana unit of Anti-Terrorist Front.

Independent observers here said if there was an election round the corner, Attar Singh’s demand would have certainly been taken care of by the state government. They opine it will be a good gesture on the part of the state government and a morale booster for the security forces if the state government offers him compensation.
