India rejects third-party mediation
Almaty, June 4
India tonight categorically denied Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf’s claim that Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee had been invited by Russian leader Vladimir Putin to Moscow for talks to defuse the South Asian military stand-off, and rejected Islamabad’s demand for third-party mediation.

Strongly condemning terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, a 16-nation security conference adopted a declaration today asking the United Nations to play a “central role” in developing a framework for meeting the challenge to fight the menace.

12 Pak soldiers killed
Jammu, June 4
As the CICA summit opened in Almaty today to work out a plan for ensuring a conflict-free region, Pakistani troops resorted to heavy shelling and firing from across seven sectors. Two civilians were killed and more than 12, including six women, were wounded. One woman was shifted to Jammu Medical College while others were admitted to Poonch and Rajouri hospitals.

An Indian High Commission staffer at Islamabad, Mr Kulwant Singh, was not allowed to return today to India for the treatment of his injuries sustained during the torture after his kidnapping by ISI operatives on June 1.

The Ministry of Rural Development has released Rs 505.63 lakh to 17 districts of Punjab as first ad hoc instalment of central funds and foodgrain under the Sampoorna Grameen Rozgar Yojana.

The Congress today announced Rs 1 lakh as compensation to the families of farmers killed in police firing in this district even as Congress leaders, including Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda, HPCC chief, and Mr Hanumant Rao, AICC General Secretary, visited Rajpura Bhain and Gulkani villages whose inhabitants were killed in the firing which took place on May 29 and May 31.

Keeping in line with the growing tendency on the part of governments to leave political issues to the judiciary for settlement, the Haryana Chief Minister, Mr Om Prakash Chautala, too has left the contentious issue of the release of arrested BKU leaders to the courts, even as the ice seems to have been broken between the state government and the agitating farmers.
