Municipal Corporation for Gurgaon likely Chandigarh, May 6 Sources said that the population within the limits of the Municipal Committee of Gurgaon was about 2.25 lakh. If the municipal limits are enhanced, as suggested in the proposal prepared by the Urban Development Department, the population living within the municipal area will shoot up to over six lakh. Since the cut-off line relating to the strength of population for having a municipal corporation is five lakh, the enhancement will enable the state government to have a corporation at Gurgaon. What has prompted the Urban Development Department to take the initiative in this matter is the landscape of the so-called villages located on the periphery of the area covered under the existing municipal limits of Gurgaon. “Big builders have set up state-of-the-art apartments in the so-called villages — one of them is a 24-storeyed building,” a source said. The sources said that firms such as DLF, Unitech, Ansals, etc, had set up residential complexes outside the municipal limits of Gurgaon and following them with more such constructions. There has also been construction of a number of commercial buildings in the same area. Since they are outside the municipal limits, the inhabitants are not subject to the payment of house tax and other dues needed to be paid to a municipal committee or corporation. The income, according to sources, which is likely to be generated from the proposed move is expected to be around Rs 6 crore to
Rs 7 crore annually. Understandably, the powerful builders’ lobby operating in Gurgaon is trying its best to scuttle the Urban Development Department’s proposal. The sources, however, said that the state government’s intent was made clear when it issued a notification regarding the enhancement of the municipal limits of Gurgaon in the gazette on June 2, 2001, and invited objections and suggestions in this regard. None of the objections to the proposal, as well as five to six suggestions received for the inclusion of certain villages in the enhanced municipal limits, was entertained by the state government. The sources said that at present the Municipal Council of Gurgaon covered areas falling on the right side of the Delhi-Jaipur Road (towards Jaipur). The proposal submitted by the Urban Development Department suggested that the areas falling on the left side, too, should be included in the municipal limits. Thirtyfive “villages” have been proposed to be brought under the urban limits of Gurgaon for this purpose. |
‘Rozgar aapke dwar’ in Haryana Hisar, May 6 He was addressing a public meeting at Bhaini Badshahpur village, about 35 km from here, last evening after inaugurating a water supply project there. He said unemployment in the state was on the rise and the government had decided to apprise unemployed youths of different schemes on the spot through this programme. Mr Chautala said that along with bank officers, officials of all departments would participate in these programmes. They would provide basic information to rural unemployed youths about different schemes. Bank officers would guide them to get loans under such schemes. The government was committed to ending the role of middlemen in getting loans under such schemes, he added. He claimed that there was an overwhelming response to the recently announced power dues waiver scheme and about 25 per cent of the total dues had been recovered from defaulters during the past week. He said with the help of NABARD, the government would spend Rs 145 crore to improve the water supply system in 519 villages of 13 districts. These included Ambala, Kaithal, Sirsa, Panipat, Sonepat, Gurgaon, Bhiwani, Jind, Mahendergarh, Rewari, Kurukshetra, Rohtak and Jhajhar. He claimed that his government had taken many decisions for the welfare of
the farming community. The government had decided to set up two sugar mills and five food processing units in Haryana during the next financial year. Mr Chautala said special emphasis was being laid on the development of dairy farming in Haryana and the Pashudhan Vikas Board had been set up to promote animal husbandry. The government had also introduced an animal husbandry insurance scheme in the state and 50 per cent premium would be borne by the government under this scheme, he added. Criticising the Congress, he said it had failed to play the role of an effective Opposition in Haryana. It was unfortunate for the state as well as democracy. Instead of giving constructive suggestions to the government, it was misleading people, he alleged. |

Macho man Shetty storms Ambala Ambala, May 6 Sunil Shetty was in town to launch the Kinetic Nova scooter in Haryana at Ambala. From the moment he arrived at Phoenix Club in Ambala Cantt, the fan following of this superstar, particularly among the young heavily decked-up girls, was apparent. The fans, led by the girls, had come to have a ‘dekko’ at Sunil Shetty and they were not disappointed. For, his
rippling muscles and a disarming smile seemed to have gone down well with his fans. Talking to mediapersons, Sunil Shetty observed that there was a tendency towards herd behaviour in the industry. “A number of films based on romance were made for two years and now period movies are being made,” he said. “Five films on martyr Bhagat Singh are being made now. But, our country definitely needs a hero like Bhagat Singh,” he added. Dressed in a body-hugging T-shirt and tight jeans with a broad leather belt, Sunil Shetty said that he himself was a fan of Amitabh
Bachchan. Amitabh Bachchan is a living legend,” he said. To a query, Sunil
Shetty, who sported a close-cropped french beard, said that every hero gets put in a mould. “However, I would like to different types of roles,” he said. “I am one of the few heroes who are from a
non-filmi background. About 90 per cent of the heroes have a filmi background. Initially I had to struggle a lot to carve a niche for myself in the industry,” he added. With a disarming smile, Sunil Shetty said that if having a well-built body was the sole criterion for becoming a hero, then every bodybuilder in the country would have become a film star. Sunil
Shetty, who has acted in films like ‘Border’, ‘Balwan’, ‘Gopi Kishan’, ‘Mohra’, and
Dhadkan, said that there is no terror of the underworld in the film industry. Regarding the Abhishek Bachchan incident, Sunil Shetty said that he knows Abhishek well and he is a well-behaved and down-to-earth kind of a person. “Sometimes it may happen that fans may rush towards you and out of them, a few may not have a good intention. An actor is also a human being,” he said. He said that as of now he has no plans of introducing the “mischief” range of clothing stores and restaurants in North India. “I am the brand ambassador for Kinetic Nova and I am promoting it because I believe in it,” he said. |
Tantrik case: judge, wife summoned
Hisar, May 6 The court rejected the police plea to close the case since complainant Balraj and his wife Sunita had expressed their willingness to drop the charge against the judge and his wife. The tantrik, who had allegedly handed over Balraj and Sunita’s son Arshdeep to the judge, has already died. The DNA reports confirmed that the child belongs to Balraj and his wife. Tantrik Prem Dass had allegedly taken away the child deceitfully from Balraj and given to the judge. The judge had contested the claim of Balraj by claiming that the child was born to his wife. Now the child is with the judge at Jalandhar and Balraj and his wife have expressed “no objection” if the child remains with the judge.

The memorandum stated that the Gujarat violence had tarnished the country’s image in the international arena. Earlier, India had set an example in maintaining harmony and now the image had taken a beating. “Gandhiji’s Gujarat has now turned into a violence-prone Gujarat and even Sabarmati Ashram is not untouched by violence,” the memorandum said. |
