4 LeT militants among 8 killed in Jammu

Jammu, February 2
Four Pakistan-based LeT militants reportedly involved in the recent massacre of 11 Muslims at Mendhar village were among eight persons killed in separate encounters in Rajouri and Doda districts of Jammu division since yesterday, a defence spokesman said here today.

In a joint operation, the Army and police killed the four LeT militants near Sanai in Surankote tehsil last evening, the spokesman said, adding that four AK rifles, 5 kg of explosives, 20 grenades, and three detonators were recovered from them.

The militants have been identified as Talab Mansur, area commander of LeT and resident of Gujranwala, Rashid Aziz, Abu Isha, both residents of Sialkote and Abu Salama of Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK).

The spokesman said the terrorists had recently infiltrated from Pakistan and were reportedly involved in the massacre of 11 Muslims, including eight children at Salva-Bherah village of Mendhar tehsil of Poonch district on January 20, the spokesman said.

Meanwhile, reports from Rajouri district said militants killed two civilians at Narilla village yesterday.

One militant was also killed during an encounter at Dhara Alad in Rajouri district last night, police sources said, adding that ultras also shot dead a woman at Kot Budhan village in Doda district last night.

In an encounter at Nagri in the same district, one militant was killed. One jawan also lost his life and four others were wounded, sources said.

A BSF jawan and a civilian were injured in a firing incident at Sopore in North Kashmir last night.

Militants attacked CRPF patrol parties at Mominabad and Anchidoori in South Kashmir district of Anantnag last evening with automatic weapons and grenades. The security forces also returned the fire but there were no reports of any casualty.

Meanwhile, with one more person succumbing to injuries today, the death toll in Thursday’s bomb blast in Reasi town of Udhampur district of Jammu region has risen to four, the police said here.

The victim, Girdhari Lal of Chattisgarh, died at Government Medical College Hospital here today, they added. PTI, UNI.

Pak troops open fire in Siachen
Tribune News Service

Jammu, February 2
After a gap of one week the icy silence on the 19,000-foot high Siachen Glacier was broken when the Pakistan troops resorted to MMG firing on the Indian posts and positions last night.

According to Defence Ministry sources, the Indian troops retaliated and there was reportedly no casualty on “our side”.

The Pakistani forces carried out intermittent firing with small arms and heavy calibre weapons on border villages in Kupwara, Pallanwalla, Mandhar, Poonch, Nowshehra and several pickets on this side of the international border yesterday.

The sources said “our troops retaliated appropriately”.

The sources said by resorting to firing and shelling the Pakistani troops were trying to push groups of militants into the Jammu sector.

“We have placed our troops on a high alert with instructions to give a befitting reply whenever the Pakistani forces resorted to shelling and firing,” the sources said.

Contradictory Army briefings?
Tribune News Service

Jammu, February 2
Which agency is to be relied on as far as the border trouble is concerned? Is it the Media Centre, set up in 16 Corps for briefing newsmen or the Army Headquarters in Delhi, for the correct version of the exchange of fire and shelling in any border sector in Jammu and Kashmir? These questions are being discussed among the journalists following the contradiction issued by the Army spokesman in Delhi on a report circulated to the mediapersons in Jammu, The Tribune excluded, by the Media Centre at Nagrota on the exchange of heavy firing and shelling in Poonch sector, on January 31.

The Centre’s report said “In Poonch, Rajouri and Nowshehra areas, Pakistani troops resorted to unprovoked, heavy firing across the Line of Control from 2.30 p.m. to 6 p.m. The press note added “Pakistani troops were reported to have fired more than 6,000 rounds of 82 mm and 120 mm bombs and 200 to 300 rockets and missiles. Some of these bombs reportedly landed in civilian areas near Poonch causing damage to the properties.

While referring to 82 mm and 120 mm bombs the Centre report had emphasised upon the mortar bomb shelling by putting the bomb in capital letters.

But within 24 hours the Army spokesman in Delhi contradicted the story by saying that the Pakistani troops had resorted to heavy shelling on the Poonch town. He said the cross-border firing was restricted to the “areas near the LoC.” The spokesman said “It was routine firing on the border which was restricted to the areas near the LoC.” He also denied that the Pakistani troops had fired 200 to 300 rockets and missiles on the Poonch town. Firing of 6,000 mortar bombs cannot be treated as a routine affair as claimed by the Army spokesman of the 16 Corps.

Those who man the Centre say that whatever material had been dished out in its press note on January 31 was based on the feedback from the forward areas. Hence one wonders whether the field reports are to be relied upon or the Army headquarters have better knowledge about what had happened 1,000 km away from Delhi.

Hizb blames India, Pak for stand-off

Srinagar, February 2
Differences between Hizbul Mujahideen and its Pakistani backers surfaced for the first time today when the dominant Kashmiri militant outfit accused both Islamabad and New Delhi of being “unrealistic” in their approach to ease border tensions.

The Pakistan-backed outfit urged the leaders of the two countries to resolve the Kashmir issue as per the UN resolutions and wishes and aspirations of the people of Kashmir saying this issue was the main reason for their confrontation.

It is for the first time that Hizbul Mujahideen had criticised Pakistan since the outfit had always been supportive of the country’s moves on Kashmir.

“Neither withdrawal of troops from the border nor the repeated demand for ending the cross-border terrorism will ease the tension between India and Pakistan as the heads of the two governments are unrealistic in their approach to ease the border tension,” the commander-in-chief of the outfit Saif-ul-Islam said in a statement here.

In an apparent reference to the stepped up anti-militant operations in Jammu and Kashmir, he said the “ongoing freedom struggle cannot be crushed by force. Those who are talking of crushing the ongoing struggle by military might are living in fool’s paradise.” “If the Kashmir issue was not addressed and steps were not taken to resolve this long-pending issue a nuclear war will not only destroy the South Asia but will engulf the entire world,” the Commander-in-chief of the outfit said.

He had a dig at Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah saying “Those who are advising India to crush the ongoing freedom struggle with force are not faithful but enemy of India’s integrity as they are concerned for their power only”. PTI
