10 furniture shops gutted in fire

In just over two years after goods worth crores were destroyed in Bhaderi furniture market fire, dense black smoke enveloped the area once again as 10 shops went up in flames.

PEC given status of deemed university
Sector 26 polytechnic also upgraded
Chandigarh, June 4
Punjab Engineering College (PEC) has finally been given the status of a ‘‘deemed university’’ following a sanction given by the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development. A sanction to upgrade the Central Polytechnic in Sector 26 into a full-fledged engineering college has also been granted.

Rainwater floods shops
Nayagaon (Kharar), June 4
For the second time in less than 48 hours, rainwater flooded over 50 shops along the main road of the village this morning. The plinth level of the shops had become low after the Building and Road (B&R) branch of the Punjab Public Works Department relaid the road. There is no storm water drainage in the area.

To generate revenue, the SAS Nagar Municipal Council is seriously contemplating to charge a certain amount of monthly fee from cable operators in the town. The fee structure of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (CMC) was being studied before the issue was put for approval before the house.

The Bhabhat Commercial Association has objected to the proposal of the Department of Local Government, Punjab, to include the village into the Zirakpur Nagar Panchayat.

The newly formed Panchkula Municipal Council has made it mandatory for all traders and business professionals functioning within the limits of the civic body to get licences by depositing professional tax and licence fee. Apart from this, the rickshaw-owners and rickshaw-pullers operating from the township have also been asked to get licence from the Municipal Council.

PEC Principal’s post lying vacant

Mired in apprehensions, the post of Principal, Punjab Engineering College, is up for grabs. The post which was vacated by the former Principal, Prof. Rajnish Prakash, after his retirement on December 31, 2000, had been advertised by the Union Public Service Commission. But with half the year gone, while serious apprehensions surround the credibility of the whole appointment process, the UT Administration is keen to get over with the whole thing.

Bharati Sharma and Poonam Diwan from Bama Academy of Fine Arts, Panchkula, have created a 35 feet high and 7 feet wide wall painting-cum-mural. The creation depicting the old Egyptian civilization related to Pharaoh dynasty will be displayed at Taksons Hotel, Ludhiana.

Ashwini Karandikar is the driving force behind the team which is currently shooting for Punjabi ‘Sa-re-ga-ma’ in the city. She is one of those rare species of female who despite having good looks and a pleasant personality opted to stay behind the camera rather than facing it. Camp for skaters in Chandigarh
Chandigarh, June 4
Hansraj Skating Club once again showed its prowess when its 10 skaters figured in the total 40 skaters selected who attended the first day of the camp here at Chandigarh. As many as 20 girls and equal number of boys were selected last evening by the selection committee of the Roller Skating Federation of India which took note of the skaters’ performance in two-day trials.

‘MP fund under-utilised’

A sum of over Rs 1,700 crore of the MP funds has been lying unutilised with the different district administrations in the country. The District Commissioners of different states have hardly taken any step to utilise the fund for which it has been allocated by the Government of India.

Admn submits Rs 320-lakh proposal for 4-lane road
Chandigarh, June 4
To rectify certain structural flaws and to extend the existing stretch of the national highway from the Sector 26 Transport Chowk to the Dhillon theatre chowk in Mani Majra into a four-lane track on either side, the Engineering Wing of the Administration has submitted a Rs 320.45-lakh proposal to the Ministry of Surface Transport for technical approval. The proposal was approved in principle in March this year (dual-divided carriageway).

Admn effects interim changes for various departments

The Chandigarh Administration today effected interim changes for the handling of various departments at the Secretary level. This was done as Finance Secretary Rakesh Singh has proceeded on leave and is not expected to return till June 11, while his tenure in Chandigarh ends on June 14.

The Chief Judicial Magistrate of Chandigarh, Mr Sant Parkash, has been posted to Gurgaon as Additional District and Sessions Judge (ADSJ) while the Member-Secretary of the UT State Legal Services Authority, Mr B.B. Parsoon, has been posted to Ambala, also as ADSJ.
