Ajmer gets ready to receive Musharraf

Ajmer, June 3
The police and the district administration have started preparations to receive Pakistani Chief Executive Gen Pervez Musharraf to the famous Dargah of Sufi Saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti during his forthcoming visit to Delhi even though the authorities are yet to get a clear indication from Pakistan in this regard.

Presuming that General Musharraf might visit the Dargah, the police authorities here along with state and central intelligence agencies have swung into action for the guest’s security.

The police has already begun clearing the Dargah area of “undesirable” elements and intelligence agencies have started keeping a close eye on suspicious elements, official sources said.

Syed Zainul Abedin, Sajjada Nashin of the Dargah, has already extended an invitation to General Musharraf to undertake a pilgrimage to the Dargah.

“Since General Musharraf is coming to Delhi for holding peace talks, it will be most appropriate that he seeks blessings at the tomb of Khwaja who had come to Ajmer from Lahore to spread his message of peace”, Abedin said.

A former member of the Dargah committee Shabir Nukshbardi also extended an invitation to General Musharraf through the Pakistani Embassy in Delhi last week.

Sarvar Chisti, secretary of Anjuman, an organisation of Khadims who are descendants of Khwaja Sahib, has questioned the invitation to General Musharraf. PTI

Mulayam for ousting NDA Govt

Jaipur, June 3
People’s Front (PF) leader and Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav today ruled out a snap poll in the country, but said the PF would try to form an alternative government before the term of the current Lok Sabha ended.

“We will try to oust the Vajpayee government which has surrendered the country’s economic sovereignty to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Trade Organisation (WTO),’’ he said.

The government was framing its economic policies on the diktat of the IMF and WTO, he added, but did not elaborate on the front’s strategy to form an alternative government.

Addressing a meet-the-press programme here today, he said that if the PF came to power, it would review the country’s agreement with the WTO, as it had destroyed domestic industries and agriculture.

While small-scale industrial units were closing down, the government was selling profit-making public sector units. Now, the government had expanded the scope of the disinvestment process to cover “sensitive’’ industries like the Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited, the PF leader added.

The NDA government was framing anti-farmer policies, he said, adding that farmers now had to face the twin problems of increasing input costs and decreasing prices for their produce.

The country was being pushed towards economic slavery by the Centre, Mr Yadav alleged, and added that the front would try to forge a third alternative to the Congress and the NDA.

The third front would bring together farmers, workers and the middle class to fight the economic reform policies initiated by the Congress and carried forward by the NDA, he said.

Mr Yadav said the Communist parties, which were earlier trying to enter into an understanding with the Congress, had also come out of the ‘trap.’’ UNI, PTI

Cong to go it alone in Punjab, UP: Vora

Bhopal, June 3
Congress general secretary Motilal Vora today said the party would contest the forthcoming assembly elections in Punjab and Uttar Pradesh on its own.

However, any proposal for an alliance with secular parties sent by the party’s state units would be considered by the high command, Mr Vora, the party in-charge for the two states, said.

Admitting that the Congress performance had not been satisfactory in the last elections in Uttar Pradesh, Mr Vora expressed confidence that this time the party would fair better especially in the light of the results of the recent assembly elections in four states and a Union Territory.

Alleging that all development works had come to a standstill and Uttar Pradesh had stopped making progress under the non-Congress governments there, he said people in the state had seen the performance of the non-Congress governments and now wanted the Congress to come back and rule the state.

A similar situation prevailed in Punjab where the SAD-BJP combine had been in power for the past five years, he said.

Stating that the Congress had accepted the challenge thrown to it by the BJP to fight it in the UP poll, he said the BJP should not forget that its nominee was placed fourth in the recently held byelection to the Shahjahanpur Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh.

Lamenting that none of the coalition governments at the Centre had succeeded in fulfilling the expectations of people, Mr Vora claimed that the main purpose of all coalitions appeared to somehow remain in power for which they were ready to enter into any alliance without caring about the interests of people.

Charging the NDA with trying to break away leaders from other parties to bolster its strength in the Lok Sabha, Mr Vora claimed that Ranjan Yadav and Ajit Panja had been lured away from the Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Trinamool Congress, respectively, and attempts were being made to make Mr Ajit Singh join the NDA. Tandoor case drags on

New Delhi, June 3
The six-year-old infamous Tandoor murder case involving former Delhi Youth Congress chief Sushil Sharma continues to be mired in legal wrangles with the case file shuttling between the Delhi High Court and the trial court.

Sharma is facing trial for allegedly killing his wife Naina Sahani in their rented house at Gole Market here on July 2, 1995, and destroying evidence by cutting the body into pieces and then trying to burn it in a “tandoor” (oven) in Bagiya Restaurant at Ashoka Yatri Nivas Hotel.

Although the high court on April 17 had reverted the case to the Rent Control Tribunal presiding officer G.P. Thareja, who was hearing the case till his transfer in August last year, it is unlikely to be heard in near future as the Delhi Government has sought recalling of the transfer order.

Thareja had on June 1 deferred the hearing till July 11 after Jayant Sud requested the court on behalf of amicus curiae K.K. Sud, to adjourn the proceedings as the high court would hear the petition for recalling its order of transfer on July 10.

Sud, now Additional Solicitor-General, had earlier sought adjournment on the ground that he had to seek permission from the government if he could continue as the amicus curie and represent Sharma in the case.

Besides Sharma, the then Bagiya Restaurant manager Keshav Kumar, also facing murder charges in the case, is in judicial custody. Three others - Rishi Raj Rathi, Ram Prakash Sachdeva and Jay Prakash Pehalwan - accused of harbouring Sharma, are on bail.

After Thareja’s transfer, his successor V.K. Jain was to hear the case. But Sharma moved an application before the district judge seeking the transfer of his case to the court of Thareja as the latter had recorded evidence of most of the witnesses.

After his plea was declined by the district judge, Sharma moved the high court and Jain stayed the proceedings following K.K. Sud’s submission that he should wait for the high court’s order.

Though the high court had ordered the transfer of the case from the court of Jain to that of Thareja, the Delhi Government requested it to recall the order saying that a successor judge always heard the cases in the event of the transfer of a judge.

While seeking the transfer of the case, K.K. Sud had said that Thereja would be in a better position to appreciate evidence as he had recorded the testimony of 86 witnesses and only formal witnesses were left to be examined. PTI

Parties gear up for UP poll

Lucknow, June 3
With an eye on the coming Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, parties are exploring possibilities of forging alliances.

The Janata Party, the Nationalist Congress Party and the Rashtriya Kranti Party are trying explore various options for the poll. The first step towards forging political ties has been taken by Rashtriya Lok Dal leader Ajit Singh who has opted to go with the NDA.

“We will be contesting the assembly elections in UP along with the BJP”, the RLD leader said.

The RLD has long been demanding a separate state carved out of the western districts and is of the opinion that its joining hands with the NDA would help it achieve this.

The NCP would soon be holding its national executive meeting to set the perspective of the party at the national level.

The party would also explore the possibility of forging an alliance with parties maintaining equi-distance with both the BJP and the Congress, Mr D.P. Tripathi, general secretary of the NCP said, adding that a dialogue was currently on with the People’s Front.

In a bid to seek the Shiv Sena’s support, the Rashtriya Kranti Party president and former Chief Minister, Mr Kalyan Singh, had toured Mumbai and met its chief, Mr Bal Thackeray. PTI

‘Withdraw’ report on prostitution

New Delhi, June 3
UNICEF has asked the Madhya Pradesh Human Rights Commission (MPHRC) to withdraw the controversial report, “Caste-based prostitution in Madhya Pradesh”, based on a study funded by it after it found the objections raised by some democratic rights groups as “legitimate”.

The report, released after a study undertaken by the MPHRC with UNICEF providing financial support, has been accused of violating human rights of certain population groups by branding them as “HIV-infected prostitutes and pimps”.

It mentions that 50 per cent females of a particular caste are HIV positive, a statement which these groups claim is against the Paris AIDS summit declaration, to which India is a signatory, WHO testing policies and guidelines and the UN International guidelines on HIV/AIDS.

UNICEF Communication Officer Geeta Athreya said the intentions of the commission were to assess the situation and draw attention to the plight of these people, especially women. PTI

Deal sternly with perjury: SC

New Delhi, June 3
Recommending stern action against persons filing false affidavits before the court, the Supreme court has said that such action by the litigants results in polluting the judicial system.

“Unscrupulous litigants are found daily resorting to utter blatant falsehood in the courts which has, to some extent, resulted in polluting the judicial system,” a three-judge Bench has said.

This was stated by a Bench comprising Mr Justice K.T. Thomas, Mr Justice R.P. Sethi and Mr Justice B.N. Agrawal, while deciding a contempt case against the Madras High Court Bar Association’s president recently.

“Effective and stern action is required to be taken for preventing the evil of perjury, concededly let loose by vested interests and professional litigants,” Mr Justice Sethi said writing the judgement for the Bench.

“If the system is to survive, effective action is the need of the time,” the Bench said. PTI

Order to close down illegal meat shops

New Delhi, June 3
The Delhi High Court has directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to close all illegal meat shops in the Capital within four weeks. Pulling up the MCD for allowing the sale of meat by some shops without licence, Mr Justice Vijender Jain directed a committee appointed by the high court to submit a report after four weeks on the compliance of the order.

“Running of unlicensed meat shops not only violates the statutory provisions of the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act but on account of no regulation and control over hygiene, the quality of such meat poses a great threat and danger to the health of people,” the court said. PTI
