Cabinet okays proposal to clear quota job backlog
1 pc hike in DA for Central staff;
illegal property transfer to be curbed
NEW DELHI, March 29 — The Union Cabinet today approved a proposal to amend the Constitution to consider backlog vacancies for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes as a separate class whereby it would not fall under the 50 per cent ceiling.

Hukamnamas revoked by new Jathedar
AMRITSAR, March 29 — The ‘ex-communication’ of Bibi Jagir Kaur, president Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee, three Sikh high priests — Prof Manjit Singh, Jathedar Sri Kesgarh Sahib, Giani Kewal Singh, Jathedar Takht Sri Damdama Sahib and Giani Bhagwan Singh, head granthi Akal Takht and five executive members of the SGPC was revoked by Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti and four other designated Sikh high priests few hours after his installation as acting Jathedar, Akal Takht.

Badal against removal of Bibi
CHANDIGARH, March 29 — The battle of oneupmanship between the SGPC President, Bibi Jagir Kaur and now ousted Akal Takht Chief Giani Puran Singh has made most Akali Dal leaders including Mr Parkash Singh Badal fumble for words. “But I would not like to comment for the next two or three days, said Mr Badal. However, he said both high priests and the SGPC have to share the blame.

Six more involved in carnage shot dead
SRINAGAR, March 29 — Six more militants reportedly involved in the Chatti Singhpora massacre of 35 Sikhs were killed in an encounter with the security forces in south Kashmir today, a Defence Ministry spokesman said.

MUMBAI, March 29 — Absconding suspended judge J.W. Singh, accused in a case of extortion and nexus with underworld don Chota Shakeel, was today arrested by the police outside a city court amidst drama and arguments between the prosecution and the defence.

PDS grain prices hiked again
NEW DELHI, March 29 — Despite the strong opposition to the hefty 68 per cent hike in foodgrain prices in the Budget, the Union Government today announced further hike in their prices from April 1 under the Public Distribution System.

ROHTAK, March 29 — The closing of the Agroha Dham in protest against the penalty imposed on two buses in Agroha on March 26 has generated tension in the region. It is alleged that some persons are trying to communalise the issue and exploiting the feelings of a particular community.
