SA beat England, enter semis

DHAKA, Oct 25 (UNI, PTI) — South Africa’s three premier batsmen-Hansie Cronje, David Cullinan and Jonty Rhodes-steered their team into the semifinals of the Wills International Cup with a comfortable six-wicket win over England at the Bangabandhu Stadium here today.

The South Africans were given a target of 282 with a strike rate of 5.7 and it was achieved in the 47th over with 20 balls to spare. England after winning the toss had made 281 for seven.

Rhodes stayed till the end with an unbeaten score of 61 studded with eight fours off 63 balls and featured in a stand of 117 off 16.5 overs for the fourth wicket with skipper Cronje who played a stellar knock 67 off just 56 balls.

Berkenstein finished off the match with a four on the on-side off England captain Adam Hollioake. It was a sad end for the British captain who had revived his side from a slump with a superlative career best unbeaten 83.

However, South Africa had a terrific start of 113 off 19.2 overs with Darryl Cullinan making an imperious 69 off 70 balls helped the team with 13 boundaries.

His opening partner Mike Rindell made 41. Cronje opened at the right time plundering his last 27 off 15 balls. He smashed five fours and two sixes off leg spinner Ashley Giles.

However, the 'man of the match' award went to Cullinan who gave his team a launching pad.

Aussies at doorstep of series win

KARACHI, Oct 25 (Reuters) — A graceful century by Mark Waugh put Australia on the verge of their first series victory in Pakistan in 39 years on the fourth day of the third and final Test today.

Australia were dismissed for 390 in the last over of the day’s play.

The 33-year-old Waugh scored a delightful 117 as Australia who resumed in the morning at 130 for one, set Pakistan a challenging target of 419 to win.

Waugh was in prime form after struggling earlier in the series. His innings was punctuated with nine boundaries and a six off 232 balls after 335 minutes of batting.

Waugh, who scored his 15th century in 81 Tests and second against Pakistan, finally departed when he was beaten in the air by debutant Shakeel Ahmad for an easy stumping by Moin Khan.

Shakeel, wicketless in the first innings, finished with impressive figures of four for 91 from 29.3 overs.

Indian team leaves for Bangladesh

NEW DELHI, Oct 25 (PTI) — The Indian cricket team led by Mohammad Azharuddin left for Dhaka today to participate in the nine-nation Wills International Cup Cricket Tournament.

India start their campaign with a quarterfinal match against Australia on October 28.

The tournament began yesterday with New Zealand taking on Zimbabwe in the only pre-quarter final match, which they won by five wickets.

"We would like to continue in the same vein in which we left Dhaka last time", Azharuddin said before the team’s departure here.

India won the silver jubilee Independence Cup Tournament, also involving Pakistan and hosts Bangladesh, in January under Azharuddin, who had just replaced Sachin Tendulkar as captain.

The team, which left by a British Airways flight this afternoon, practised here at a two-day conditioning camp at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium grounds.

The Indian skipper was confident of his side putting up a good show at the knockout tournament.

"We have talent and match-winning players in our side and I see no reason to worry about the first match against Australia," the captain said.

The team management was earlier considering delaying the team’s departure by a day to get an extra day’s practice here in view of reports of unseasonal showers in Bangladesh.

However, Indian cricket board secretary J.Y. Lele issued a directive yesterday asking the team to keep to the original schedule.

Andre Agassi sails into final

OSTRAVA, Oct 25 (Reuters) — Qualifer Jan Kroslak of Slovakia reached his first ATP tour final yesterday.

His seventh-seeded opponent Thomas Enqvist retired with a ankle injury in the opening set of their $ 1 million Czech Indoor Tournament semifinal.

Andre Agassi beat Zimbabwe's Wayne Black 7-6, 6-3 in the other semifinal and left the home crowd torn between their admiration for the American and their hopes for a former native son.

Kroslak, from nearby Bratislava in the former Czechoslovakia before the country divided peacefully into two in 1993, said he was in awe of Agassi.

Asked what he thought about facing him, the world number 153 replied: "What can I say? It can give me a heart attack."

World number six Agassi broke Black in the fifth game of the first set, but the Zimbabwean fought off a series of break points at 4-2 then broke back to level at 4-4.

Black, world ranked 92, saved another two break points to force a first set tiebreak, but the second seed moved up a gear and took it 7-2.

Agassi broke Black in the fourth and sixth games of the second set and cruised home.

Swede Enqvist quit with a sore right ankle at 3-2 down.

Haas-Corretja final

LYON: Germany's Tommy Haas reached the Lyon Grand Prix final for a second successive year after twice taking advantage of injuries to his prestigious opponents.

Within 24 hours, Haas prevailed over the world's top two players in Pete Sampras and Marcelo Rios, but almost without effort as both pulled out.

Third-seeded Rios withdrew from the semifinal on Saturday as he was trailing Haas 2-6, 0-1, 15-40.

"I did not realise he was injured but he told me he had a pulled muscle," said Haas, meets Spain's Alex Corretja in the final.

"The first seven games were very tense and sometimes you get injured at such a pace."

Back problems had forced Sampras out of his quarterfinal against the German.

US Open champion Pat Rafter also looked like he had knee trouble when he lost his quarterfinal against South African Wayne Ferreira.

As a result, the fight for top spot at the end of the season might depend mainly on the health of the three players still in contention.

Fourth-seeded Corretja, a French Open finalist, cruised into his first indoor final 6-3, 6-2 against a weary-looking Ferreira.

Should he win, the Spaniard would qualify for the ATP tour finals.

Williams triumphs; Jeev finishes 3rd

SINGAPORE, Oct 25 (PTI) — European tour regular Jeev Milkha Singh carded two under par 70 while his compatriot Vivek Bhandari fired three under par as the two Indians finished third in the NTRY Club here today.

Jeev, who led the leaderboard at the halfway stage, recovered from a poor third round yesterday for an aggregate of eight-under-par 280. America’s Peter Teravainen also joined the Indians with three-under-par 69 effort.

India’s Gaurav Ghei, with an aggregate of six-under-par 282, took the seventh spot while Amandeep Johl (293) finished way down the leaderboard.

England’s Chris Williams secured his second victory on the 1998 Omega tour after holding off a late challenge from America’s Ted Purdy.

Five ahead at the start of the day, the South Africa-based Williams had to rely on a three shot cushion going into the last when he was forced to take a drop after firing his second shot into the water right of the green.

Williams eventually got down in six for an even par 72 and an 11-under winning total, one ahead of Purdy who toured the 6829-yard layout with a flawless 66.

Superb display by Anand

TILBURG, Oct 25 (UNI)— Vishwanathan Anand moved into top gear as he demolished main rival Vladimir Kramnik with a masterly display in the second round of the Fontys-Tilburg Chess International here yesterday.

The Indian is now on top of the standings in the 12-man tournament.

Anand, 28, brought Kramnik down in just 35 moves and used only 44 minutes on his clock and his display included a great queen sacrifice. Anand is now the only player with two wins after two rounds and with wins over two of the tougher players in the field, he looks will settled into the tournament. He has a third round game against Jeroen Piket, who lost his second round to Peter Svidler and is at the bottom of the table with half a point from two games.

Apart from Anand and Svidler, the third player to notch a win was Michael Adams who defeated veteran Viktor Korchnoi, a former Russian now living in Switzerland. It was a marathon 87 move game that lasted almost eight hours.

Anand encountering the Petroff defence from Kramnik dominated the game from the start. Kramnik played adventurously even though Anand looked in command. Kramnik sacrificed with his bishops in the middle game, and then Anand gave up his queen for a rook. It left the board in an interesting position as Anand had a rook and two minor pieces for Kramnik’s queen and that proved tough for the Russian who resigned after 35 moves.

Kramnik, five years junior to Anand, is now down in the standings with just half a point from two rounds. He will meet Joel Lautier in the third round and he has white pieces.

Subcontinent hockey loses a friend
by Prabhjot Singh
Tribune News Service

ARDIAL SINGH "Kular", Vice- President, Federation Internationale de Hockey, died in Nairobi on Friday from complications of a viral fever he contacted at Kuala Lumpur during the recently concluded Commonwealth Games. He lapsed into a comma on Thursday and could not recover. He was 67.

Hardial Singh, nicknamed "Hardie" in the hockey world, was omnipresent at all FIH tournaments. A man of few words, Hardie was honoured with the Olympic Order by none other than the International Olympic Committee chief, Mr Juan Antonio Samaranch, at the Utrecht World Cup in June this year. The honour came for him for promoting hockey in the African continent.

Hardial Singh 'Kular" belongs to the famous Kular family of Sansarpur village, near Jalandhar, which once dominated the international hockey scene. Even at Utrecht, there were three generations of Kulars and of Sansarpur, representing three different continents.

While Hardial Singh "'Kular" represented Kenya and Africa, Bindi Singh Kular, a member of the playing side of Canada, represented North America. The chief coach of the Indian women's hockey team, Col Balbir Singh of the Services, represented India and Asia.

It was during the 1968 Olympic Games at Mexico that eight players belonging to Sansarpur played in the Olympic hockey competition. And Hardial Singh, who along with Hardev Singh, played for Kenya, was the oldest of them all.

Hardial Singh was the pioneer of the Sikh Union Hockey Club in Kenya. After retiring from active hockey, he took to administration and rose to be the FIH Vice-President besides heading the Kenyan Hockey Union and the African Hockey Federation.

Hardial Singh had been associated with various international events as technical delegate and tournament director. In fact, he was expected to be in Lahore for the 20th Champions Trophy Hockey Tournament beginning on October 31.

Hardial Singh always felt bad for the down slide of Indian hockey. Though he by nature was a quiet man, he was considered a great friend of subcontinent hockey and supported both India and Pakistan at international fora on various issues, including amendment to rules.

The latest was the move to replace the wooden stick with the synthetic stick. He was known to have supported the wooden stick to the great relief of the big sports good industry in Jalandhar (India) and Sialkot (Pakistan) inspite of tremendous pressure from Australians and European manufacturers of synthetic sticks.
