Onion price
COLOMBO, Oct 25 (ANI): Onion price in Sri Lanka has shot up to more than double in recent months because of an acute shortage of supply from India. Onions in Sri Lanka are fetching up to Rs 80 a kilo compared with about Rs 30 two months ago. The Sunday Times newspaper today quoted an official of Sri Lanka’s Cooperative Wholesale Establishment (CWE) as saying India had stopped exporting onions and local production was not sufficient to meet the demand. The CWE official said Pakistan was a possible source of import, but the quality was not as good as Indian onions.

Asha Bhonsle's offer
NEW DELHI, Oct 25 (PTI) — Playback singer Asha Bhonsle today expressed desire to render her voice to the poetry of Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee. Asha Bhonsle called on the Prime Minister and offered to sing his poems, BJP MP Vijay Goel said. At the end of the 30-minute meeting, Mr Vajpayee handed over Asha a book of his popular volume "Mere Ekyavan Kavitayen" (my 51 poems) for her to select for singing, Mr Goel said.

Typhoon toll 160
MANILA, Oct 25 (AFP) — Death toll from typhoon Babs rose to 160 in the Philippines today with more reports from Regional Disaster officials reaching here as relief operations continued, officials said. The National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) placed death toll at 156, but radio reports citing provincial disaster officials said at least four more bodies have been recovered in northern provinces. Deaths were caused by landslides or flash floods by debris and uprooted trees or electrocution by fallen power lines.

President's rule sought
GUWAHATI, Oct 25 (UNI) — The Congress today demanded President's rule in Assam for alleged failure of the Assam government to hold long-pending panchayat elections in the state. At a press conference, state Congress chief Tarun Gogoi alleged that the election to the panchayats was long overdue and the democratic rights of the voters had been curtailed. A delegation of the party would call on President K.R. Narayanan before the winter session of Parliament demanding the imposition of President rule in the state.

Telecom TU's threat
NEW DELHI, Oct 25 (PTI) — Five telecom unions have threatened to go on a day's "token strike" on November 12 in protest against the corporatisation of the Telecom Department. "The proposed corporatisation as being dictated by the IMF and the World Bank would ultimately lead to privatisation of the department which will be against the interest of employees", the union leaders told reporters. Over two lakh employees will join the token strike, they claimed, adding the government's decision would hand over assets of more than Rs 60,000 crore to corporations which will finally be grabbed by private companies.

UK storm kills 11
LONDON, Oct 25 (AFP) — At least 11 persons were killed as torrential rain and winds of up to 130 km per hour lashed Britain, the police said today. The downpour, the worst to hit Wales and southwestern England in 20 years, also caused about 400 million pounds worth of damage, insurers said. The storms caused rivers to overflow and interrupted road, train and sea traffic in southern Britain. Eight persons also died in rain-related road accidents in western parts of the country, rescuers said.

Poachers denied bail
JODHPUR, Oct 25 (PTI) — A Jodhpur court has rejected the interim bail applications of two accused in the poaching case in which cine actor Salman Khan is also involved. Additional District and Sessions judge Amar Chand Singhal yesterday rejected the interim bail applications of Pratap Singh Rajput and Tolaji Anger in the poaching of black bucks and Chinkara case.

Nasreen to seek pardon
DHAKA, Oct 25 (DPA): Bangladesh’s controversial feminist author Taslima Nasreen will seek forgiveness from radical Muslim clerics for alleged sins against Islam in an effort to restore her normal life, close family sources said here today. "Taslima wants to come out in the open and lead a normal life like all other people," said a close family member. Family sources said the embattled Nasreen was prepared to ask the clerics to forgive her and withdraw the "fatwa" in return for pledges that she would not write anything in future critical of Islam.

AP Govt on quota
HYDERABAD, Oct 25(UNI): The Andhra Pradesh government today stuck to its stand that categorisation of Scheduled Castes for reservation in jobs and educational institutions was well within its purview, even while deciding to await the outcome of the presidential reference of the draft ordinance in this regard. The state cabinet at an impromptu meeting here discussed the ordinance referred to the President by Governor C. Rangarajan. The government was of the view that "adequate justice" had not been rendered to the Madigas among the Dalits in reservations and the categorisation was to ensure justice to all sections of the Dalits, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu said at a post-cabinet press briefing.

Nod to sue sought
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, Oct 25 (PTI): The BJP has sought permission of Kerala Governor Sukh Dev Singh Kang to prosecute Chief Minister E.K. Nayanar for his alleged abetting of violence in response to the murder of a CPM’s front wing leader, Bhaskara, in Kasargode district. This was announced in a press conference here today by the BJP state general secretary and central executive member, P.S. Sreedharan Pillai, who would appear in court for the RSS Karyavahak on the defamation case.
