McGrath puts Aussies in command

KARACHI, Oct 23 (Reuters) — Paceman Glenn McGrath took four wickets against Pakistan today to keep Australia on target for their first Test series win in Pakistan for 39 years.

At the close of the second day of the third and final Test Pakistan were 170 for six in reply to Australia’s first innings score of 280.

Pakistan captain Aamir Sohail led a recovery with an unbeaten 83 after his side had slumped to 54 for four.

McGrath produced two blistering spells on a slow track to finish with four for 41 from 15 overs.

He captured the scalps of Shahid Afridi (10), Ijaz Ahmad (5), Inzamam-ul-Haq (9) and Moin Khan (20) to take his tally of wickets to 177 in 40 Tests.

McGrath was also involved in the dismissal of Salim Malik. He caught him at point off Stuart MacGill to leave Pakistan in dire trouble at 54 for four.

McGrath had Afridi caught by Mark Taylor as he attempted a cover drive while Ijaz tried an over-ambitious hook to be caught by Ian Healy. Inzamam was snapped up by Darren Lehmann at short extra-cover.

McGrath ended Moin’s resistance with a short-pitched delivery which the Pakistan wicketkeeper clipped to Michael Slater at square leg.

Sohail’s invaluable 155-ball knock included 11 fours and a six. He and former captain Wasim Akram put on 54 in an unbroken seventh-wicket partnership.

Earlier, 18-year-old wrist spinner Shahid Afridi took the wickets of Gavin Robertson (5) and Glenn McGrath (6) to become Pakistan’s fifth bowler to capture five wickets or more on his Test debut.

Ian Healy made 47, sharing a 55-run ninth-wicket stand with MacGill after Australia had lost two quick wickets when they resumed on 207 for six.

Zimbabwe raring to go

DHAKA, Oct 23 (PTI) — A confident Zimbabwe clash with experienced New Zealand in the inaugural tie of the Mini World Cup Cricket Tournament here tomorrow even as fears loom large of unseasonal rains ushering in the new tie-break rule.

The last thing rival captains Alistair Campbell of Zimbabwe and Stephen Fleming of New Zealand want is their pre-quarterfinal match truncated or decided by the tie-breaker.

Under the rule, being applied for the first time in a major tournament, in the event of 25 overs-a-side not being completed in a match, five bowlers from either side will aim at a set of stumps and the team scoring most hits will be declared the winner.

Echoing the fears of many of his counterparts in the nine-nation tournament, Campbell said "basically, it is a knockout tournament. It could be one game, it could be more".

He, however, felt Zimbabwe had turned the corner after their dramatic one-off Test victory over India earlier this month. "We won against India, the guys are confident and are playing good cricket."

In one-day games, nobody is an underdog. We are taking it very seriously", he said.

"It’s a 50-50 opportunity", said Fleming, who led New Zealand to the Commonwealth Games bronze medal.

The winner of tomorrow’s pre-quarterfinal match will go on to meet World Cup champions Sri Lanka, seeded directly into the quarterfinal along with Australia, England, India, Pakistan, South Africa and West Indies.

India ready to take on Australia

Formidale Australia and ICC’s "tricky" new tie-break rule do not dampen India’s campaign for the nine-nation mini cricket World Cup as the newly-knit team prepares for the tournament in Dhaka.

Coach Anshuman Gaekwad is confident as ever and harbours a dream of watching India in the final whoever the opponents may be.

"We are going to win the cup in Dhaka and get into the right frame of mind for the coming tours before the cricketing extravaganza in England - the 1999 World Cup," Gaekwad said.

"We have been doing well in one-dayers and we should be doing well in Dhaka also," he said about the recent form of Indian cricket team.

"Let’s hope we do the best and continue with where we had left in Dhaka at the start of the year," Gaekwad said during the team’s conditioning camp at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium grounds.

India won the three-nation silver jubilee Independence Cup beating Pakistan in Dhaka.

Captain Mohammad Azharuddin, who would be playing his 300th one-dayer on October 28 - India’s mini World Cup campaign opener against Australia was buoyant about the prospects of scoring triple century of one-day matches.

"I am quite happy and it is because of lot of hard work that I put in during my school and college days," he said.

Refusing to comment about India’s chances at the cup, Azharuddin, however, said: "we will go out and play our natural game. Our morale is always high."

The skipper said though Australia were a good side, India had beaten the kangaroos in the recent past.

"We’ve beaten them in India and then in Sharjah," he said, but added: "On a given day, one team is going to play better than the other and whoever does better will be the winner."

About the recent changes introduced in the national side, he said changes were good for the team. "This will help us find the right combination for the England World Cup."

Unlike other skippers, who have expressed fears about the new tie-break rule, Azharuddin took a practical view.

"We are practising at the nets to get the feel of new rule and it is fairly justified on the part of ICC to introduce it and save matches being washed out due to rain or bad light."

In the tie-breaker, being enforced for the first time in a major tournament, five bowlers from either side aim at a set of stumps and the team securing the most hits wins.

A great loss for team: Gaekwad

NEW DELHI, Oct 23 (PTI) — The Indian cricket team, preparing here for the nine-nation Mini World Cup in Dhaka, will "sorely" miss the services of teenage off-spinner Harbhajan Singh who was dropped from the squad on an ICC directive.

"It is a great loss for me and the team as a whole. I hope to get him back in the squad as soon as possible," coach Anshuman Gaekwad told reporters during the team’s conditioning camp at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium grounds.

"He is almost like our main bowler, I would surely have liked to play him," Gaekwad said when asked whether Harbhajan’s absence would blunt India’s spin attack.

Captain Mohammad Azharuddin echoed his coach’s views, saying: "it is very unfortunate he is out of the team and I can understand it would be very tough for him to take this at such a young age. He’s just 18."

Both Gaekwad and Azharuddin said it was for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to take steps to get the bowler back on the field.

Asked why the board had not backed the offie and picked him for the team as the Sri Lankans had done with Muttiah Muralitharan, Azhar said: "It is for the board to decide."

While the team is awaiting Harbhajan’s return, coach Gaekwad is philosophical. "I would very much like him to be back, but after such a shock, his morale is bound to be down and we will have to give him more time to reorganise himself."

"His bowling was never questioned by any of the umpires on the field," he said, expressing shock over ICC’s directive asking the BCCI not to select the young off-spinner for future tournaments till he underwent corrective measures.

Agassi in q-finals; Corretja survives

OSTRAVA (Czech Republic), Oct 23 (AP) - Second-seed Andre Agassi of the USA outplayed Magnus Norman of Sweden 6-2, 7-5 to advance to the quarterfinals of the $ 1 million Czech Indoor ATP Tennis Tournament.

Agassi broke Norman’s serve in the first and fifth game of the first set despite playing in a practice tempo. Norman improved his performance in the second set and both players held on to their serves until the tenth game, but Agassi finally managed to break the Swede and win the match in straight sets yesterday.

Meanwhile, home favourite Martin Damm rallied to beat fourth seed Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Kafelnikov, number 10 in the world, broke Damm’s serve in the fourth game and comfortably won the first set, but gradually grew nervous as Damm started to rush the net.

Kafelnikov tried to stick to his aggressive tennis, but Damm, the only remaining Czech in the tournament, improved both his serve and returns and eventually won the match.

"It would be nice if I could repeat my 1996 result here, that is semifinals," Damm said after the match.

In the next round, Damm will face Wayne Black of Zimbabwe who beat the 1996 Czech Indoor champion David Prinosil of Germany 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Black, ranked 92nd on the ATP tour, crushed the Czech-born Prinosil with a dashing serve, often faster than 200 km per hour.

In other action yesterday, Andrei Medvedev of the Ukraine defeated third seed Karol Kucera of Slovakia 6-4, 6-7 (4-7) 6-4, and Jan Kroslak of Slovakia downed Guillaume Raoux of France 7-5, 6-2.

LYON: Looking for the form that took him to this year’s French Open final, Alex Corretja survived a tough second-set scare to beat Romania’s Andrei Pavel 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 at the Lyon Grand Prix.

Spain’s Corretja, seeded fourth here and ranked seventh in the world, made a vital service break in the sixth game of the final set, when Pavel put a powerful forehand return from his opponent into the net yesterday.

In the next game, Pavel failed to convert on a break point, and the Barcelona-born player held on in his remaining service games to win the match, qualifying for the final eight.

In the first set, Corretja stormed back from 2-4 behind with a series of blistering forehand returns.

However, the 23-year-old Pavel, ranked 73rd in the world, was a revelation in the second set, breaking the Spaniard’s serve twice to take the set 6-2.

"It wasn’t pretty tennis today," Corretja said. "The match was really tough for me, especially in the second set, when Pavel hit four consecutive winners at one stage."

"But it is the first time that I have won two successive matches indoor on the tour, so I am very pleased."

In the next round, Corretja will face surprise quarterfinalist Olivier Delaitre.

The 31-year-old French qualifier, ranked a lowly 227th, lost the first set to Gianluca Pozzi, but stormed back to take ten consecutive games and win 1-6, 6-0, 6-4.

Germany’s Tommy Haas squeezed past Fabrice Santoro, the defending champion here and number eight seed, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5, in just under two hours.

MOSCOW: Venus Williams took only 50 minutes to eliminate Russian Elena Likhovtseva 6-3, 6-1 and advance to the quarterfinals of the Kremlin Cup.

The American faltered slightly in the first set when she dropped two games after going up 4-1. However, she quickly regained control and powered through the rest of the match yesterday.

Her only gift to Likhovtseva was in the sixth game of the second set. Leading 5-0, Williams double-faulted and committed three unforced errors to lose the game.

Williams was pleased with the quick match, after playing well past midnight on Wednesday in a doubles match she won with her sister, Serena.

"It was nice to have an easy match like that because I had a long match yesterday in the doubles," she said.

In other second-round matches at the $ 1 million tournament, second seed Monica Seles of the USA downed Barbara Schett of Germany, 6-3, 6-4.

In the first set, Seles broke Schett in the fourth game to go ahead 3-1, but double-faulted and lost at love in the next game.

Seles regained her balance, however, sending a two-handed backhand down the line to clinch the set.

Seles said she still had her eyes on the WTA Tour’s number one ranking.

"I have to improve a couple of things to be No. 1 and I’m trying to do that", she said. "The competition is very hard but that is one of the reasons why I’m still playing."

After two days of upsets, yesterday saw one more surprise, with ninth-ranked Patty Schnyder losing to Spain’s Magui Serna, 6-7 (3-7), 4-6.

East Bengal, Mahindras score wins

NEW DELHI, Oct 23 (PTI) — Riding on a quick brace by Sreekanta Dutta, Calcutta superleague champions East Bengal outwitted Army XI in the group ‘B’ quarterfinal league of the Kelvinator Durand Cup Football Tournament today.

In another action-packed encounter, Mahindra and Mahindra, fresh from their triumph in the just-concluded Chief Minister’s Cup, defeated Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) 3-2 to bag three points at the Ambedkar Stadium here.

Captain PJ Jose (33rd minute), Shamsi Raza (40th), and substitute Mohd Shakil (88th) scored for Mahindra and Mahindra while Sukhbir Singh (34th) and substitute Kuldip (85th) netted in favour of PSEB, quarterfinalists in the Federation Cup.

Runners-up in the Federation Cup East Bengal sealed the fate of a struggling Army XI early in the first half.

Basudev Mondal, who has come away from the Asian Games preparatory camp at Bangalore to bolster his side in the absence of Baichung Bhutia, Raman Vijayan, Carlton Chapman and Tushar Rakshit, paved the way for the first goal.

His fifth-minute corner curled into the Army goal mouth and Renedy Singh headed it on to Sreekanta Dutta, who stopped the ball and tapped it into the right corner of the net.

Two minutes later, Dutta carved out a brilliant move along with his attacking partner Bijen Singh to give East Bengal an unassailable 2-0 lead.

ADD...INDIA READY TO TAKE ON AUSTRALIA....

Though unhappy over Harbhajan Singh's absence, Azharuddin said it afforded Delhi off-spinner Nikhil Chopra a good chance to prove himself. "He is a good striker of the ball and a decent off-spinner and I hope he does well in Dhaka".

On India’s preparations for the 1999 World Cup, Gaekwad said: "It is a long way off, but we have it at the back of our minds. We cannot be worrying about it from now on with so many tours lined up."

"We cannot just ignore them and go to the World Cup without substantial wins behind our back."

On the team’s performance on the recent tour of Zimbabwe, where India won a one-day series 2-1 but lost the one-off Test by 61 runs, Gaekwad said there was nothing to worry about.

"We have beaten Zimbabwe in Zimbabwe (one-dayers) and were the only team to do it. Both England and Pakistan were beaten by the hosts handsomely," he said.

The coach said the final strategy for the opener against Australia will be chalked out after reaching Dhaka and getting a feel of the wicket.

On Australian spin wizard Shane Warne’s absence, Gaekwad said: "when he was there (in India and Sharjah), he didn’t make any difference."

The 14-member Indian team, which had four-hour long nets today, is considering delaying its departure to Dhaka by a day. "We can have an extra day’s practice here rather than wasting one day in Dhaka where unseasonal rains are hampering other teams’ practice matches."

India is scheduled to leave for Dhaka on Sunday afternoon.

Joyner's death due to epileptic seizure

SANTA ANA (California), Oct 23 (AP) — Olympic sprint champion Florence Griffith Joyner suffocated from an epileptic seizure in her sleep last month, authorities have said.

They said yesterday an autopsy found no indication of drug use in the death of the 38-year-old dazzling track star known simply as Flojo.

"In layman’s terms, she suffocated," said Dr Richard Fukumoto, Chief of Forensics for the Orange County Sheriff’s-Coroner Department.

Lt. Frank Fitzpatrick, head of forensic sciences for the Sheriff’s office, said toxicology tests showed she had taken about one tablet each of the over-the-counter painkiller tylenol and antihistamine benadryl, but "there was nothing unusual in terms of drugs."

The seizure involved a congenital blood vessel abnormality. Dr Barbara Zaias said Griffith Joyner had a "cavernous angioma" on the front left part of her brain, a condition found in about 25 per cent of the population.

Many people with the condition live their whole lives without knowing they have it, but in others it can cause headaches and seizures, she said.

Fukumoto said Griffith Joyner apparently had been lying on her stomach and the seizure possibly caused her limbs to stiffen and turn her head to the right, where her breathing was constricted by covers and pillows.

The medical experts said the abnormality has never been associated with any banned or illegal substances. Griffith Joyner had been shadowed by speculation about use of banned substances, but she never failed a drug test and denied ever using drugs.

P. Srinath, Rovai to clash for title

HYDERABAD, Oct 23 (PTI) — Top seeded Prahlad Srinath of India will clash with second seeded Federico Rovai of Sweden in the men’s singles final of the second leg ITF-GVK Indian Satellite Tennis circuit here tomorrow.

In contrasting semifinal matches at SAAP-APLTA Tennis Complex today, Indian Davis cupper and world number 549 Srinath had to fight a grim one-hour-48-minute battle to outplay fourth seeded Johan Hede of Sweden 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

In the other match, Rovai scored an easy victory over Patrick Erhardt of Germany 6-2, 6-1 in just 52 minutes.

In an evenly fought first semifinal, Srinath broke Hede’s service in the first game itself, but Hede struck back in the fourth and levelled the score 2-all.

In the fifth game, Srinath again broke Hede’s service, to lead 5-3 and then won the set after the Swedish player held his service in the ninth game.

In the next set, Srinath broke Hede in the fifth game to take 3-2 lead. Hede won the eighth game and as Srinath lost concentration. The Swedish world number 629 levelled the score at 4-all with fine double-handed backhand volleys.

Capitalising on Srinath’s shoddy display, Hede took a 5-4 lead and then broke the Indian to equal the set score at 1-1.

In the deciding set, both players shared games till 3-all but, Srinath won the next three games to pocket the match.

After both the players held their serves till the sixth game, Srinath broke Hede in the seventh to lead 4-3.

Up with his own serve, Srinath showed his true form by sending down powerful aces to take 5-3 lead.

Keeping the same tempo, the Indian raised to two match points in his favour and won the set and match with a fine ace on the second occasion.

In the other semifinal, Rovai held the whip over the match with well calculated shots to notch up a facile victory.

Delhi have Haryana struggling

ROHTAK, Oct 23 — Haryana were struggling at 60 for two at the end of the second day's play today to avoid an innings defeat in the Ranji Trophy league match against Delhi being played at Maharaja Aggarsen Cricket Stadium here.

Delhi scored 299 runs in the first innings thereby taking a vital lead of 160 runs over Haryana who were dismissed for 139 runs before tea on the opening day yesterday.

Resuming their overnight score of 67 for two, Delhi batsmen took the score to 80 when Ajay Sharma was caught at silly point by Shafiq off Vineet Jain. He hit two boundaries to his individual score of 22. Overnight not out batsman Ashu Dani and Ajay Sharma contributed 44 runs for the third wicket.

The highlight of the Delhi innings was a chanceless score of 118 by all-rounder Virender Sehwag. He hit 16 boundaries and three sixes in his maiden century. He frustrated all Haryana bowlers and the worst to suffer was Pardeep Jain who conceded 41 runs in just three overs.

Though young Sehwag was playing only his second Ranji Trophy match, today's was the first inning he played in a first class match. Sehwag was in the Delhi eleven that was scheduled to play against Tamil Nadu last year. That match was abondoned due to a controversy over pitch conditions.

The opening batsman Ashu Dani looked comfortable against Haryana bowlers. He scored 52 runs with the help of seven fours and took Delhi's score to 142 for five. After his departure Delhi lost Akash Malhotra (18) Sandeep Angrulla (0) and Rahul Sanghvi (9) in quick succession. The Delhi total was 199 for 8 at that stage and it appeared that the Delhi innings may fold soon.

However, the partnership for the ninth wicket between Amit Bhandari and Sehwag made a fruitful contribution of 36 runs. But the climax of the Delhi innings was a partnership of 64 runs between Sehwag and Robin Singh (jr). This was the highest partnership of the innings. Delhi were all out before tea for
