Shahid Afridi rocks Australia

KARACHI, Oct 22 (Reuters) — Eighteen-year-old Shahid Afridi made a dream Test debut for Pakistan today, snapping up three wickets in 13 balls to restrict Australia to a total of 207 for six.

He marked his country’s call for the decisive final match of the series by dismissing the Waugh twins in three balls. Ten balls later he bowled Darren Lehmann’s for a first day haul of three for 37.

The left arm spinner and attacking one-day opener was a last-minute replacement for the ill Saeed Anwar.

Pakistan, 0-1 down, have not lost a home series to Australia since 1959-60. Nor have they tasted defeat in a Karachi Test in 44 years — 32 games.

Australia suffered another body blow after Afridi’s demolition when opener Michael Slater fell just four runs short of his ninth Test century. He was smartly stumped by Moin Khan off the recalled Arshad Khan for a fighting 96.

Slater, dropped on 25 and 45, batted for 330 minutes and faced 257 balls. His innings was studded with nine boundaries and two sixes off off-spinner Arshad.

Slater, who reached 3,000 Test runs when he had made 52, was hit twice on the temple in the first session when Wasim Akram gave him a barrage of bouncers.

Afridi, veteran of 66 one-day internationals, accounted for Mark Waugh (26) off a brilliant catch by Inzamam-ul-Haq.

Two balls later he left Steve Waugh (0) stranded in front of the wickets off a faster one.

Lehmann (3) dragged the ball on to his stumps while trying to play a forceful drive.

"There can’t be a more satisfying feeling than to represent the country in Test cricket. I am sure I will not be labelled one-day specialist any more," Afridi said.

Pakistan captain Aamir Sohail said: "He is a very busy cricketer. He was lucky to get into the side but he grasped the opportunity with both hands."

Mark Taylor, electing to bat on a slow and turning pitch, was the first to go. Australia’s captain, who made 334 not out and 92 in the drawn second Test, tried to pull a delivery from Arshad and was caught at mid-wicket by Inzamam-ul-Haq.

Justin Langer was the only Pakistan success in the post-lunch session when he was trapped in front off Shoaib Akhtar. Langer (30) put on 67 for the second wicket with Slater in 117 minutes.

The third wicket partnership between Slater and Mark Waugh yielded 64 in 117 minutes. But the dismissal of Waugh triggered a collapse as Australia lost their last four wickets in a space of 38 runs.

Scoreboard:
Australia (1st innings): Taylor c Inzamam b Arshad Khan 16

Aussies have depth to counter English

SYDNEY, Oct 22 (AP) — England’s cricket team arrives in Australia tomorrow with captain Alec Stewart the latest to believe the land of perpetual hope might be able to get a little glory.

"We’ve got a good squad of players going out to Australia. If we play to our full potential we’ll be very competitive with the best team in the world,’’ said Stewart before leaving home with the job of preventing Australia’s sixth-straight Ashes series victory.

England’s hopes might be shaped by events in Pakistan over the next few days. If Australia can get a win or draw against the hosts in Karachi it will mean a first series victory on the subcontinent in 39 years.

If Mark Taylor should lead his men to that landmark, after his Australian record 334 in the second Test, he will bring home a buoyant team which would be unbackable favourite to beat the tourists.

Should Pakistan win to level the series, it might send Australian spirits tumbling after a trying tour, and boost England’s chances.

But Australia appear to have the depth to counter an English team which is dreadfully inconsistent from beating South Africa in a home series to losing a one-off test against Sri Lanka.

The Sheffield Shield competition opened this week and some familiar names made the early moves to get in position should those on the Pakistan tour falter.

To many who saw Matthew Elliott on last year’s Ashes tour to England it must come as a surprise that he is no longer part of Australia’s Test squad.

He topped Australia’s scoring in that 3-2 series win with 556 at 55.60 including a 199.

Greg Blewett was Australia’s second-best batsman on that tour, his century in the first Test was his third from his first three Ashes Tests, but like Elliott has found himself relegated to Shield cricket.

Australia’s limited-overs wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist is the heir-apparent to Ian Healy, who set a world record for dismissals in the first Test victory in Pakistan.

All three fringe players made imposing starts to the season. Blewett, opting to parade his skills as a potential opener, scored a dashing 175 for South Australia against New South Wales.

Elliott, who said his passion for the game disappeared last season, made a determined hundred for Victoria yesterday, while Gilchrist scored a century for Western Australia.

Australia’s main bowler, spinner Shane Warne, is in serious doubt for the opening two Tests because of a shoulder injury but paceman Glenn McGrath has performed well on unsuitable wickets in Pakistan and appears over his injury problems.

McGrath was the chief weapon in last year’s Ashes series. He took 36 wickets, 12 more than Warne, including a lethal 8-38 at Lord’s.

But England team manager Graham Gooch has high hopes for his team.

"We want to be the best and most respected team in the world. There’s no shame in saying that,’’ Gooch said before his departure.

Gooch has warned his players that they will need to act professionally to beat the Australians, even dispensing advice on how much to drink.

Gooch wants his team to go into the five-Test series with confidence — not clutching at straws.

Sampras, Pat Rafter advance

LYON, Oct 22 (AFP) — U.S. Open champion Pat Rafter scored his second successive straight sets victory as he stormed into the last eight of the $ 725,000 Lyon Grand Prix here last night.

The second-seeded Australian downed Hicham Arazi of Morocco 6-3 6-3 in the second-round match after dropping only four games against Steve Campbell in the first round.

Rafter trailed 0-2 in the first set and then won five straight games to take a grip he never relinquished against a nervous-looking opponent.

Pete Sampras, aiming to hold on to his world number one spot at the end of the year for the sixth time in succession and a three-time champion here, struggled to a 6-4 1-6 6-4 win over fellow American Todd Martin in a first-round match.

The pair have met on 18 occasions with Sampras having won 12 straight times since 1995. This time, however, he was made to fight.

Sampras, who beat Martin in last week’s Vienna final, served superbly and moved well to take the first set 6-4 thanks to a break in the third game.

Martin then reeled off five straight games from 1-1 in the second set to level at one-set-all with Sampras looking lacklustre.

The decisive set went on serve to the 10th game when Sampras sealed his win with the aid of a Martin double fault on match point.

Third seeded Marcelo Rios of Chile, who this week overhauled Rafter to move to second in the ATP Tour ranking list, won his first-round match 6-3 6-3 over American Jeff Tarango.

In other first-round matches played yesterday, Andrei Pavel of Romania beat Frenchman Lionel Roux 6-3 6-1 and Australian Todd Woodbridge struggled past Johan Van Herck of Belgium 6-4 6-7 (4/7) 7-6 (7/0) in 2hr 22min.

Woodbridge, ranked 62nd in the world now faces Sampras in the second round.

Ostrava: Second-seeded Andre Agassi breezed to a 6-4, 6-4 win over Kenneth Carlsen of Denmark in the first round of the $ 975,000 Czech Indoor Championships here on Wednesday.

The American will face Sweden’s Magnus Norman in the last 16.

Third-seeded Karol Kucera of Slovakia also advanced to the second round with a hard-fought 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 victory over Daniel Vacek of the Czech Republic.

Andrei Medvedev of Ukraine was another player in first-round action and he defeated Holland’s Sjeng Schalken 6-0, 6-4.

Russian teenager Marat Safin, who dispatched top seed Petr Korda in the first round, found himself unable to sustain that form when he faced Sweden’s Nicklas Kulti in a second-round match. The Swede won 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-1).

Kulti will face his compatriot Thomas Enqvist in the quarter-finals after seventh-seeded Enqvist defeated local favourite Bohdan Ulihrach 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 6-4.

Delhi started its innings on a dismissal note when they lost opener Akash Chopra (17) at the total of 35. Chopra hit two fours during his 51 minutes stay in 46 balls. The Delhi skipper Vijay Dahiya joined opener Ashu Dhani but was out without opening his account.

Akash Chopra fell leg before to Pankaj Thakur and Vijay Dahiya was caught by Parinder off Vineet Jain. Delhi needs 73 runs to take a first innings lead with eight wickets in hand.

P. Srinath rallies to beat Panja

HYDERABAD, Oct 22 (PTI) — Prahlad Srinath of India, Patrick Erhardt of Germany, Johan Hede and Federico Rovai both of Sweden moved into the men’s singles semifinals in the second leg of ITF-GVK Indian Satellite Tennis Circuit played at SAAP-APLTA tennis complex here today.

Top seed Prahlad Srinath quelled a stiff challenge from Indian qualifier Sourav Panja 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 taking one hour 52 minutes.

Second seeded Federico Roval of Sweden outplayed Danai Udhomchoke of Thailand 6-3, 6-2. Patrick Erhardt of Germany (third seed) dropped a set before defeating qualifier Mustafa Ghouse of India 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 while fourth seeded Johan Hede of Sweden triumphed over fifth seed Timo Nigri of Germany 6-2, 6-3.

In an evenly contested encounter, Srinath, showed guts playing with slight fever and occasional cramps. Though he claimed the first at 6-3 without much sweat, he had a tough time in the next.

In the second set, Saurav Panja took a lead of 3-1. But Srinath put his physical discomfort behind and suddenly opened up with a good serve and volley game to draw level at 4-4.

In the next set, the games went with serves till 5-5 and then Panja broke Prahlad’s serve to lead 6-5 and held on to his to win the set at 7-5.

In the decider, both players levelled at 3-3 but Srinath suffered cramps on his right calf muscle.

He, however, continued and Panja taking advantage lead 4-3. But the never-say-die Srinath rallied to make it 4-all. Panja then double faulted and Srinath made it 5-4 in his favour. He then comfortably held on to his serve to win 6-4 and pocket the match.

Fourth seeded Hede took one hour 25 minutes to outplay a frustrated Timo Nigri of Germany in straight games at 6-2, 6-3. Both players were engaged in long baseline rallies. Hede played a tactful game by avoiding negative points and trapping Nigri to make silly mistakes, to score an easy victory.

Indian qualifier, Mustafa Ghouse put up a brave fight against third seed Patrick Erhardt before bowing out of the championship.

Erhardit scored most of his points with good returns while Mustafa’s returns fell on the net. Erhardt took the first set at 6-4 and in the second he played erratic shots and by the time he could made amends, Mustafa clinched the set at 7-5 to level set score to 1-all. In the deciding, Erhardt played very carefully and his serve and volley attack gave him the victory at 6-2 to move into semis.

In the semifinals, Prahlad Srinath will take on Johan Hede while Federico Rovai will clash with Patrick Erhardt.

Prasanna ready to help Harbhajan

BANGALORE, Oct 22 (PTI) — Renowned offspinner EAS Prasanna does not foresee much difficulty for Harbhajan Singh to change his action and has offered his services towards achieving this end.

Prasanna told PTI today that he was ready to help the Punjab offspinner and the board could utilise my services and make the best use of it at any time. I have proved myself in the case of Rajesh Chauhan whose bowling action too came under cloud last year.

"It is very difficult to say seeing from a distance and it is very nice on the part of the BCCI and the ICC to come forward to assist and stand by the young offspinner financially to correct his action", Prasanna said.

"It may not be difficult for him to correct his action as he is young and a lot more is expected from him and I am sure he will be back in the national reckoning," he said.

Rajesh Chauhan’s case is different, "I am happy Rajesh’s bowling action was cleared and he could overcome the mental and physical stress".

Prasanna’s contemporary, leg spinner BS Chandrashekar said, "I have not watched much of cricket now a days and I am not the right person to comment. One thing is sure if any bowler changes his action it is difficult to get back his rhythm. But Harbhajan Singh is young and hope he can take things sportingly.

In another match Ropar beat Moga 2-0 in a lop-sided encounter. For Ropar Bhupinder Singh showed fine reflexes and good footwork to make short work of Ramneek 15-0, 15-1.

In the doubles Bhupinder paired with Inder Preet Singh to drub the Moga pair of Sukhjinder and Mandeep 15-0, 15-3.

Mohun Bagan win, FC Kochin held

NEW DELHI, Oct 22 (PTI) — Strong contenders Mohun Bagan hung on to an early first-half goal to register their first win against Vasco Sports Club, Goa 1-0 while title holders and New look FC Kochin were held to a goalless draw by Air-India in the group ‘A’ quarterfinal league tie of Durand Cup football here today.

Basim Yonnan headed home for Mohun Bagan in the eighth minute, which turned out to be the winner, as Bagan picked up three points. FC Kochin and the former Mumbai league champions shared one point each.

Both matches never rose to expectations and failed to inspire a sparse crowd.

Bagan’s face saving win came off when a free kick was awarded early in the first half. Cheema Okerie’s powerful shot deflected off the rival defence wall and landed in front of Khemtang who relayed it to Basim to apply the finishing touches and the gritty midfielder made no mistake.

FC Kochin with just a few experienced players in their ranks had to fight hard to contain the marauding airmen.

The Kerala club side are without 10 of its regular players - two are attending the Asian Games preparatory camp and the rest doing duty for India in the Asian junior football in Thailand.

"The boys played well. They could create openings but failed in final finish. We have to improve up on the new combination with most of them playing the first match for the club," Babu Mather, manager FC said after the match.

While coach Sridharan and captain K.V. Dhanesh were desperate over those missed opportunities, their new recruit A Sidiki, also playing his first match in India missed a sure chance in the 64th minute. His powerpacked shot off a Pappachan cross flew over the bar.

The tournament also witnessed some rough play as the referee M. Balu had to book three with yellow cards. With Air-India captain Godfred Pereira one among them. Debdas Sen and FC Kochin's C.V. Pappachan were also shown yellow card.

Experienced Pereira combined well with Nitish Shetty to raid FC Kochin's goal mouth at frequent intervals but ended with a shoddy finish.

Bagan could also have won by a better margin against Vasco Goa in the second match of the day. But the Goan custodian Joaquin Palha denied the Calcutta giants any chance of increasing the lead.

Bagan coach Amal Dutta also gave full credit to rival goalkeeper for his superb saves and said his players played well though failed in improving the goal margin.

Bagan's attacking combination Cheema Okeri and Friday Elahio missed two chances each while Khemtang's two quick moves were taken comfortably by the rival custodian.

The Goan side also fought tooth and nail to draw parity but again failed to score. Gegory Clark and Lowis Nickson combined well for the Vaso Goa.

Services win by 2 wickets

JAMMU, Oct 22 (PTI) — An unbeaten 61 by C D Thomson helped Services defeat hosts Jammu and Kashmir by two wickets in the North Zone Ranji Trophy one-day match here yesterday.

Services scored 178 for 8 wickets in the allotted 50 overs with hard-hitting middle-order batsman C D Thomson, scoring 61 in just 70 balls.

They then skittled out Jammu and Kashmir for 133. Chinmay Sharma (3/16) and Arun Sharma (2/24) were the wreckers-in-chief.

Hosts skipper Sanjay Sharma won the toss and put Services into bat. The visitors made light of the early dismissal of N Singh for 4 with Survejeet Singh (29) and S Verma (22) putting on 61 runs for the second wicket.

After Chinmay Sharma (11), the only other batsman to get into double figures got out, Thomson kept one end intact even as wickets fell like nine pins on the other to take Services to a respectable score.

Sarandeep fashions Amritsar victory

PATIALA, Oct 22 (FOSC) — Although off spinner Sarandeep Singh deserves credit for bowling a tight line and length to return with magnificent figures of 7 for 65, the hosts batsmen plotted their one downfall with a combination of indiscreet shots and an indifferent attitude to be all out for 203 runs as Amritsar entered final of the Dhruv Pandove Cricket Tournament (under-19) here today.

Resuming at the overnight score of 17 for no loss it was only Mohammad Shahid who held up one end while wickets fell like nine pins at the other. After M. Shahid (65) fell, it was left to middle order batsman Harman Harry to salvage whatever he could from the ruins. He put his head down to play a doughty little knock of 57 while the rest of the batting simply fizzled out.
