Karnataka regain Irani Trophy BANGALORE, Oct 5 (PTI) Karnataka regained the Irani Trophy by virtue of their first innings lead against the Rest of India when their five-day match ended in a draw at the Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium here today. Chasing a victory target of 410 in 52 overs, Rest of India were 164 for one in their second innings in 46 overs and the match was called off before the scheduled close with six mandatory overs remaining. Karnataka won the trophy for the fourth time in five appearances. Rest of India skipper V.V.S. Laxman also had to suffer the ignominy of missing a century by just seven runs when he was caught by Arun Kumar off Sunil Joshi. Venkatesh Prasad, captaining Karnataka in the absence of Anil Kumble, was lucky to have won the trophy in his maiden appearance as skipper. The last win for Rest of India was in 1993-94 and since then it is only Ranji champions who have been winning the trophy. Bombay won it last year. Karnataka made 326 in their first innings and in reply the Rest managed to make 221. The hosts who were 200 for four overnight in their second innings added 104 runs before declaring at 304 for six immediately after lunch today. A. Vijay went on to make 71 runs before he was caught by skipper Laxman at first slip off Chopra. Vijay during his stay hit six boundaries and a six over mid on off Nikhil Chopra. Wicketkeeper Siraguppi was run out by substitute Debang Gandhi before he could open his account. Then Sunil Joshi and Ananth put on 64 runs for the seventh wicket. Ananth got a reprieve when he was dropped at 20 by Debang Gandhi at mid-off with Karnataka on 286. Sunil Joshi was not out on 52 and Ananth on 28 when the hosts declared their second innings. Set 410 to win in 52 overs, Rest tried to make a match of it with Laxman, instead of Jyoti Yadav opening the innings with Amol Muzumdar. The openers made a good chase, putting on 154 runs for the opening wicket, but the victory target was a tall order. Karnataka then introduced spinners Anand Katti from the seventh over in place of Venkatesh Prasad and left arm Sunil Joshi for Dodda Ganesh in the tenth over. Rest, however, went to tea at 113 for no loss after 30 overs. Laxman's 93 (9x4, 146 balls, 174 minutes) was the highlight of the post lunch session. M.S.K. Prasad (6), who came in at the exit of Laxman, and Mazumdar (63) remained unbeaten when the match was called off in the mandatory overs. Scoreboard |
Azhar, Jadeja, Ganguly to lead MUMBAI, Oct 5 (PTI) Mohammed Azharuddin, Ajay Jadeja and Saurav Ganguly would lead India, India 'A' and India 'B' teams, respectively, in the NKP Salve (Challenger) Trophy day-night cricket tournament to be held at Ahmedabad from October 15-18. Key bowlers Javagal Srinath and Anil Kumble would play only in the final for the India team on October 18 provided it progresses to the title-clash, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jaywant Lele announced here today. "They have been given a much-needed rest for the first two ties by the selectors as they are considered to be the key bowlers for Indias campaign in the next World Cup," Lele said. The teams were chosen yesterday at Bangalore by the five-man national selection committee, Lele added. The tournament assumes importance as the Indian team for the October 24-November 1 nine-nation Wills International Cup tournament at Dhaka would be selected at Ahmedabad on October 18. A notable omission from
the squads is leg spinner Laxman Sivaramakrishnan who was
surprisingly brought back into national reckoning after
more than a decade by the same set of selectors who named
him in the Rest of India squad for the Irani Cup match
against Ranji Champions Karnataka. Veteran opener Navjot Singh Sidhu has not found a berth in any of the squads, raising a question mark on his future in one-day internationals. Teams: Javagal Srinath and Anil Kumble (Karnataka) are to play in the final on October 18 if the team qualifies for it. India "A": Ajay Jadeja (capt, Haryana), S. Saba Karim (Bengal), Gagan Khoda (Rajasthan), Nikhil Haldipur (Bengal), Amol Muzumdar, Jatin Paranjpe (both Mumbai), Venkatesh Prasad Doda Ganesh (both Karnataka), Nikhil Chopra (Delhi), Sunil Joshi (Karnataka), Jacob Martin (Baroda) and Gnanendra Pandey (Uttar Pradesh). India
"B": Saurav Ganguly (capt, Bengal),
M.S.K Prasad (Andhra), Sachin Tendulkar (Mumbai), Rohan
Gavaskar, Devang Gandhi (both Bengal), Sanjay Raul
(Orissa), Amay Khurasia (Madhya Pradesh), Vanka Pratap

Historic win for Australia RAWALPINDI, Oct 5 (Reuters) Australia needed only 13 minutes and 3.5 overs today to skittle out the last batsman and register their first Test win against Pakistan in 39 years. The final days play in the first of a three-Test series was a formality as Pakistan resumed at 137 for 9, trailing by 107 runs on the first innings. Salim Malik was 48, Saqlain Mushtaq was 3. In the fourth over of the day Saqlain was leg before to Glenn McGrath for 7 but not before his partner Salim Malik had reached his 29th Test 50. Malik took two runs off McGrath to reach his fifty in 201 minutes and 151 balls with six fours but it was a vain attempt to keep the Australian side at bay. The visitors might have wrapped up the game yesterday but bad light stopped play on a day interrupted by heavy rain and gloomy skies. This was Australias first win in a Test in Pakistan since the 1959-60 season when Richie Benauds team routed Pakistan by a margin of 2-0 in a three-match series. Australia, on their subsequent five visits to Pakistan, failed to win a single Test. Australian captain Mark Taylor was delighted. "It is highly
enjoyable and satisfying, more so because our win in a
Test has come after such a long time. We are naturally
going to celebrate". He said Taylor lauded the effort of his team, which rallied from a shaky 53-3 at lunch on Friday to accumulate 513 all out. "The batsmen did well to come out of a collapse. Slater, Steve Waugh, Healy batted superbly as did Lehmann. And the bowling was as good. MacGill bowled accurately and was well supported by McGrath, Fleming and Miller." "We are happier even more because of Healy reaching a landmark of 356 dismissals behind the wicket to create a new world record. He is a superb team man", Taylor said. MacGill was a big influence in Australias memorable win by taking nine wickets for 113 in the match. Steve Waugh received the man of the match award for his fighting 157. "It was important to win and I am delighted," he said. MacGill hailed The 28-year-old from Western Australia came in as replacement for Shane Warne who is recovering from major shoulder surgery. Now he has become a rival, though MacGill said after his side beat Pakistan by an innings and 99 runs that he wanted to form a partnership with the Australian spin legend. "Its pleasing to perform like this and a great thrill. I look forward to bowling with Shane in the time to come and it will be an honour for me", he said. MacGill, who also took nine wickets in the tour opener against Karachi last week, felt it was always going to be hard for Pakistan batsmen to cope against a wrist spinner in form. "I found confidence once I bowled a few maidens and then wickets came my way. The ball did turn and that was that", he said. Australian skipper Mark Taylor was full of praise and said there could be a MacGill-Warne spin spearhead against England from next month. "MacGill got a chance and he grabbed it with both hands. He has taken 14 wickets in just two Tests and it will be great to have him alongside Warne in the Ashes", Taylor said. "It would possibly be the best pairing in the future. He is a great bowler," the skipper added. Pakistan (1st

Indian men down Mexico ELISTA, Oct 5 (PTI) Indian men scored a hard-earned 2.5-1.5 victory over 44th ranked Mexico in the sixth round of the Chess Olympiad here yesterday. The 30-year-old debutant Anup Deshmukh was the star of the day for India as he beat International Master G. Russek on the fourth board. The other three games ended in draws. Grandmaster Dibyendu Barua appeared to be in better position in the petroff defence against gm G.Hernandez on the top board when he won a pawn but the bishop ending was dead drawn after 35 moves. Former national A champion Abhijit Kunte and Garcia Gonzalez played only 22 moves in reti opening before deciding to end the game. IM K. Sasikiran won a pawn in an irregular queen pawn opening and entered a queen and pawn ending in 40 moves. Deshmukh sacrificed a bishop for two pawns in the tarrasch defence against Russek, who faced an irresistible attack since then. The Indian pocketed the vital point when he won back the piece through the attack after 42 moves. India have 12.5 points midway through the tournament. Today is rest day. After humiliating defeats of both men and women, India had a good day in womens event too. Indian women thrashed Finland 2-1 in the sixth round with S. Vijayalakshmi and former national champion Swati Ghate winning their respective games. Vijayalakshmi beat Paasikangas-Tella while Ghate overcame T.Rantanens challenge. Finland scored their point when Indias Bhagyashree Thipsay fell to Koskela. Vijayalakshmi faced the trompovsky attack against Paasikangas and attacked wildly. She won a piece for two pawns and went on to win another piece at the end of the 28th move. Ghate won material in the sicilian defence and triumphed comfortably in a bishop and pawn ending in 54 moves. Williams, Siemerink lift titles MUNICH, Oct 5 (Reuters) Venus Williams won the first womens final of the Grand Slam Cup and almost doubled her earnings for the year by beating Swiss Patty Schnyder 6-2 3-6 6-2 yesterday. The towering 18-year-old American, who had earned $ 913,346 since the start of the year when she came to Munich, pocketed $ 800,000 (about Rs 3.4 crore) as women appeared for the first time in the lucrative event for the best performers in the years four Grand Slams. Victory for Schnyder would have made her this years most prolific player on the womens circuit with six titles. Instead, she stayed tied with American Lindsay Davenport with five wins after having to settle for the runner-up prize of $ 400,000. The world number five overpowered Schnyder in the first set, firing her trademark missiles and taking it in 28 minutes with a big forehand volley. The 19-year-old Swiss fought back in the second, running for every ball until Williams hit a straight forward backhand into the net to give her a 5-3 lead. Serving for the set, Schnyder had to save two set points before winning with another error by Williams. Schnyder, world-ranked ninth, had impressed in her semifinal here against Martina Hingis until the world number one pulled out because of cramps at 5-5 in the deciding set. But there was little she could do to counter Williams, who was back in command in the deciding set, opening up a 3-1 lead and later sealing victory with a fiery two-handed backhand volley on her first match point. TOULOUSE (AP): Jan Siemerink of the Netherlands beat No. 1 seed Gred Rusedski 6-4, 6-4 to win the $ 400,000 Toulouse Open Tennis Tournament yesterday. Siemerink took 62 minutes to beat the hard-hitting British player and win his fourth career title. Most recently Siemerink won the Rotterdam ATP Tournament in March. No. 2 seed Siemerink got a breakthrough in the fifth game of the first set, when he broke Rusedski's powerful serve to go 3-2 ahead. The Dutchman hit a fine backhand return to go level at 30-30 and then hit another after Rusedski should have buried a comfortable-looking backhand volley. Rusedski, the world's No. 14, had his best chance to break back when Siemerink was serving at 4-3 ahead. But at 30-30, Siemerink made a fine smash and followed up with a ferocious first serve to hold the game and go 5-3 ahead. In the second set, the left-handed Siemerink broke serve in the third game and served consistently to clinch the title. Siemerink, 28, beat No. 3 seed Thomas Johansson of Sweden and Wimbledon junior champion Roger Federer, Switzerland, on his way to the final. |
Punjab and Sind Bank champions CHANDIGARH, Oct 5 Favourites Punjab and Sind Bank, Jalandhar, added another golden chapter to their sporting history by regaining the trophy in the 28th All-India Gurmit Memorial Hockey Tournament at the Sector 42 hockey stadium here today. In an intense battle for supremacy, they edged out a fighting Punjab Police, 4-3 after trailing by two goals at half time. The bank men had last won the trophy in 1995 and had finished runners-up last year. For Punjab Police, joint winners with Chandigarh XI in 1991, it was indeed so near and yet so far. Having squandered a two-goal advantage gained in the first half, the Punjab cops came back strongly with a last gasp goal in the 67th minute to draw level 3-3 but just when the tie seemed to be drifting towards the tie-breaker Punjab and Sind Bank clinched the issue through a gem of an effort by international Sandeep Singh who scored the match winner off a penalty corner. The victory was indeed a befitting tribute by the bank men to their founder Chairman, Dr Inderjit Singh, who breathed his last in New Delhi yesterday. Punjab Police were slightly off colour as compared to their outing against Air-India in the semifinals on Sunday. Gursewak was not his usual self and his absence for long spells upset the rhythm to quite an extent. A shift in strategy wherein left half Ramandeep Singh was brought in to man the defence in the second half also did not yield the desired results. Punjab and Sind Bank, on the other hand kept their nerves and did not seem to be upset by the early setback. Their attacks in the second half eventually bore fruit with the cops buckling under sustained pressure. The game was hardly two minutes old when Punjab Police took the lead through Manpreet Singh, who found the target off a penalty corner. In the 22nd minute, Punjab Police consolidated the lead through a field goal scored by outside-left Daljit Singh. It was in fact a move initiated by skipper Baljit Singh Dhillon who after covering some ground put outside-right Sarabjit Singh in possession. Sarabjit could not succeed in his effort but Daljit made up for the lapse by placing the ball in the goalmouth (2-0). Punjab and Sind bank also got a couple of chances to score in the first half but a goal eluded them. On changing ends, Punjab and Sind Bank pulled one back in the 46th minute when they were awarded a free hit just outside the 'D'. Olympian Sanjeev Kumar's hit was deflected in by international Ram Saran much the relief of his team-mates (1-2). Four minutes later came the equaliser for the bank men. Off a penalty corner push by Sanjeev, the ball nearly entered the goal but Sukhwinder of Punjab Police effected a timely save with goalkeeper Surjit Singh lying sprawled on the ground. However, Sandeep Singh of Punjab and Sind Bank pounced on the ball and shot home in the melee to make it 2-2. In the 61st minute, Punjab and Sind Bank took the vital lead through centre-forward Parminder Singh who had raced down the left flank. After a brief passing bout with team-mate Ram Saran, Parminder regained possession of the ball and beat the rival goalkeeper with a fine reverse flick (3-2). However, a penalty stroke converted by skipper Baljit Dhillon in the 67th minute once again brought Punjab Police on even terms. The stroke was awarded when goalkeeper Teja Singh of Punjab and Sind Bank stick-checked a rival in the "D". But with hardly one minute to go for the final hooter, Punjab and Sind Bank found the match winner when they were awarded a penalty corner. Following the push by Sanjeev, centre-forward Parminder left a dummy for Sandeep Singh who sounded the boards sending a wave of joy in the PSB camp (4-3). Mr P C Dogra, Director-General of Police, Punjab, who was the chief guest gave away the prizes. Among those present on the occasion was Mr Chander Shekhar, IG, Punjab Police, and senior vice-president of the Indian Hockey Federation. Shivalik Club were awarded the fairplay trophy. Teja Singh of Punjab and Sind Bank was adjudged the best goalkeeper while his team-mate Bikramjeet Singh was adjudged the best full back. Jatinder Kumar of Chandigarh XI and Baljit Singh Dhillon of Punjab Police were adjudged the best half-back and best forward, respectively. Teams: Punjab and Sind Bank: Teja Singh, Rajinder Singh (jr), Bikramjit Singh, Baljit Singh Saini (capt), Sandeep Singh, Bhupinder Singh, Harpreet Singh, Baljeet Singh Chandi, Parminder Singh, Sanjeev Kumar, Ram Saran, Bhupinder Singh, Rajinder Singh, Ripudaman, Ranjit and Edward Alloysius. Punjab Police: Surjit Singh, Sarabjit Singh, Manpreet Singh, Harpreet Singh, Balwant Singh, Jaskaran Singh, Baljeet Singh Bhullar, Baljeet Singh Dhillon, Sukhwinder Singh, Daljit Singh, Gursewak Singh, A. Kumar, Ramandeep Singh, Surjit Singh (jr) Harinder Singh and Jagdev Singh. Umpires: Satinder Sharma and Varinder Bahadur. |

This time even the players for the qualifying round, slated for October 9, will be provided free board and lodging. Railways drub Punjab eves to enter final CHENNAI, Oct 5 (PTI) Indian Railways scored a facile 5-0 (HT 2-0) win over Punjab to enter the final of the Bank of Baroda 49th Senior National Women's Hockey Championship for the 17th time and 15th on the trot at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium here today. Railways proved beyond doubt that it was for nothing that 14 of their players were in the squad that represented India in the Kuala Lumpur Commonwealth Games. Punjab was not a match for them on today's showing at least. The Railway raids flowed in waves and the Punjab defence was at their wit's end to plan an effective strategy to check the onslaught. The match started in electrical fashion with the winners netting twice in the opening three minutes itself. This in effect completely demoralised the Punjab team who were seldom able to enter the opposition circle. On one such occasion a good penalty corner drive by Amandeep (sr) was stopped in time by the alert Railway keeper Tingolima Chanu, who otherwise had an easytime. Railways appeared to have specialised in taking indirect penalty corners and two of the goals came through that. Pritam Rani Thakaran who scored three goals opened the account in the opening minute converting a Kamala pass. Manjinder made it 2-0 off a Sadeep push off a penalty corner to lead 2-0 at the half way stage after the break, Pritam (2) and Suraj Lata completed the tally to seal Punjabs fate. In between Sumitra of Punjab just failed to fasten on to a through pass from Neelam. Later, Haryana played a
superb game to outclass Bombay 5-0 and set up a title
clash with Railways. |

The changes in rules will become effective from November 1 and all federations have been asked to carry out the changes on trial basis in major national club level competitions. The libero will have to wear a jersey different from other team members and substitutions involving the libero will not be counted as regular ones and will not be carried out like them. They can only take place when the ball is either dead or before the whistle for the service. 4. It will only be with the approval of the first referee that an injured libero may be replaced during a match by any other player, who can then only play as a libero for the rest of the match. The other rule changes pretain to misconduct rules. From now onwards there will only be three categories of misconduct, instead of four rude, offensive and aggression. Repeated rude conduct and offensive conduct will be sanctioned as expulsion. Aggression will be sanctioned by disqualification. Now, disqualification due to offensive conduct (aggression) will not require a previous sanction. Now, the players cannot touch the centreline with their foot for it will be considered to be a fault. The service attempt rule has also been changed. Now as soon as the ball is released by the server, the service will be considered as played, even if the ball falls on the ground. |

Double for Delhi in junior events JAIPUR, Oct 5 (PTI) Formidable Delhi looked set for a clean sweep of the titles on offer in the North Zone interstate badminton championship when they bagged the junior boys and girls titles today with their senior counterparts set to follow suit, reaching the finals of both events here. In the junior boys section, Madhur Kalia had little difficulty in beating Punjab's Rohan Kapoor 15-8, 15-10 in the singles. Kalia then paired with Arjun Kalia in the doubles. After a testing time in the first game, they clinched the issue in their favour 17-15, 15-7 against Rohan Kapoor and Aman Sekri. The Delhi junior girls were given a tough fight by Punjab shuttlers but the former prevailed. Delhi's Kanika Kamboo rallied to beat Navdeep Kaur 6-11, 11-5, 11-2. The Punjab girls took the doubles when Summit Kalra and Navdeep Kaur beat Kamboo and Gayatri Mehndiratta 15-2, 15-6. In the decisive second singles, both Mehndiratta and Summit Kalra were tired after the doubles match and under immense pressure. But the strongly built Mehndiratta overcame exertion to thrash Kalra 13-2, 11-8. In the first game, Mehndiratta after running up a 9-1 lead capitalising on the Punjab girl's mistakes, inexplicably lapsed into errors herself and let Kalra equalise at 10-10. But the Delhi shuttler soon pulled up her socks to take the game at 13-12. The next game was also
close, but Mehndiratta managed to take it at 11-8 as
Delhi after a lapse of many years picked up the junior
girls title. |
