Chandigarh, July 12

Ramanjit Singh, alias Romi, one of the most-wanted accused in the 2016 Nabha jailbreak case, will soon be extradited to India from Hong Kong.

NABHA JAILBREAK Tracked in 2018

  • Romi had allegedly coordinated from abroad in 2016, which led to sensational escape of six inmates from the Nabha jail
  • In 2018, AIG GS Chauhan had tracked him in Hong Kong, but could not get legal clearance at that time

A court in Hong Kong, on July 8, approved the Indian security agencies’ allegations against Romi as a substantial ground for his extradition, revealed Punjab Police officials late this evening.

A police team will bring Romi once the Indian Government receives a formal intimation in this regard. A Punjab Police team, led by AIG GS Chauhan, had tracked him in Hong Kong. The extradition awaits formal approval from the CEO (equivalent to a Governor) of the Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong.

The Interpol had put him on a global watch list at the behest of the Indian security agencies.

The Indian Government had demanded Romi’s extradition in two criminal cases in 2016, which, they said, was the equivalent of 28 serious offences in Hong Kong.

Romi was arrested in India in a credit card fraud case. He met gangster Gurpreet Sekhon and others in the Nabha jail. Romi’s cousin Rami Machhana was a member of the Shera Khuban gang.

After being released from the jail on bail, Romi escaped on a fake passport to Hong Kong. The Punjab Police had found that he was in touch with Pakistan-based Khalistani terrorist Harpreet, alias Happy PhD, who was allegedly killed by his rivals.
