Flying kite with banned string may land you in jail

The Ludhiana police have intensified the drive against the banned Chinese string. In the past week, the police have recovered over 1,000 rolls of the string.

If anyone uses or sells plastic string, he may face a case under Section 188, IPC, under which the violator may get imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to six months, or with fine which may extend to Rs 1,000, or with both. It is a bailable section. However, now the police started adding rigorous charges by registering a case under the Wildlife Protection and Environment Act in which the violator may get punishment up to 5 years in prison and a fine of up to Rs 1 lakh and since it was a non-bailable section, the violator has to face jail.

Hence, if any kite lover who will fly kites with the deadly string will also be on police radar and he may end up in jail.

Interestingly, shopkeepers have been secretly selling the string. In retail, a spool of Chinese string costs Rs 400 to a buyer while in wholesale, a full box containing over two dozen spools of the string costs around Rs 12,000. Late on Thursday night, the police nabbed a shopkeeper, Kunal Arora, of Kailash Nagar and seized 330 rolls of the Chinese string.

ADCP (Crime) Rupinder Kaur Sran said following a tip-off, a raid was conducted at his shop and house and string was seized. The suspect was arrested.
