This operation is part of the ongoing ‘Operation ‘Jeevandan’ drive launched by the district police to combat drug abuse through surprise checkpoints and stringent checking measures.

During routine checking on the Reasi-Arnas Road, a police team signalled a bike to stop. “On seeing the police party, the rider attempted to escape, but the police party swiftly apprehended him. He was identified as Sumesh Bhat, a resident of Nagrota. During search, eight grams of heroin was recovered from his possession,” an official spokesperson said.

A case under Sections 8, 21, 22 of the NDPS Act has been registered at Reasi police station and investigations have been initiated to unearth the forward and backward linkages of this drug network.

Reasi SSP Mohita Sharma shared details of the operation, emphasising that Reasi police is employing a multipronged strategy to deal with the problem of drug abuse.

“Awareness programmes are being conducted across the district, and drug peddlers are being regularly booked under the PITNDPS Act. Additionally, Reasi Police have launched an anti-drug helpline number (9070907017) to facilitate public reporting, ensuring that the identity of callers will be kept confidential,” she said.

The SSP warned the drug peddlers, asserting that there is no place for them in Reasi. She urged those involved in drug trafficking to abandon their harmful activities and reintegrate into mainstream society, warning that those who continue on this path will be dealt with an iron hand.
