Two militants were killed in an operation in south Kashmir's Kulgam district, officials said.

The gunfight erupted on Monday morning when security forces launched a cordon and search operation at Mirwani Damhal, Hanjipora, area following an input about militants’ presence.

"As the cordon was being laid, hiding militants opened fire triggering a gunfight. In the operation so far, two militants have been killed," an official said, adding that the operation is still under way.

After the operation is now over and J&K Police have requested citizens not to venture inside the encounter zone since such an area can prove dangerous due to stray explosive material.

"Although bomb disposal squads of Kulgam Police have cleared the area of all stray explosives, people are requested to co-operate with police till the area is completely sanitized and cleared," a police officer in Kulgam said

The identity of the slain militants has not been ascertained yet.

Meanwhile, mobile internet service has been suspended in Kulgam and neighbouring Shopian district as a precautionary measure.
