Chandigarh, July 6

Marking the completion of 61 years of its existence, the PGIMER will celebrate its 61st Foundation Day on July 8. Its alumnus Lt-Gen Daljit Singh, DM (neonatology), AVSM, VSM, PHS, DGAFMS and Senior Colonel Commandant AMC, will be the chief guest at the celebrations.

Lt-Gen Daljit Singh is the Director, General Armed Forces Medical Services. With a career in neonatology, he has been recognised for his exceptional service with awards like the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) and Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM).

The institute was formally inaugurated on July 7, 1963, by the then PM, late Pt Jawahar Lal Nehru. Within a short period of four years, it was declared as an “Institute of National Importance” in 1967. The first batch of postgraduates was admitted in January 1963.

The institute has 728 faculty members and around 1,300 resident doctors. With 2,233 beds, the PGIMER serves over 30 lakh out-patients and around 1 lakh in-patients annually, with 160 specialties and super-specialty OPDs.
