Acting on a tip-off, the city police have arrested two persons for throwing prohibited material, including mobile phone, inside high-security Amritsar Central Jail here.
The police recovered six mobile phones from their possession while another mobile was seized from the jail complex through which the accused were in touch with a jail inmate. He was also arrested in the case. Besides six mobiles, the police also seized opium from their possession.
The operation was led by Assistant Commissioner of Police (South) Maninder Singh, who was also injured in the incident.
Though the police authorities were tightlipped over the seizure, Mukhwinder Singh Bhullar, DCP (investigations), confirmed the arrest and seizure of mobile phones.
Nearly 500 mobile phones were recovered by the Central jail authorities in the past six months. The Central jail authorities have been conducting regular search operations.
The Punjab Police also deputed cops at vulnerable points outside the Central jail which is surrounded by densely populated localities infamous for drug abuse.
