Pensioners at the receiving end

Parvinder Kaur (80) has been coming to Bal Bhawan from Dadu Majra for the past five days on foot in the hope of getting her old-age pension, but due to a long waiting list of pensioners whose thumb impression has mismatched at an e-Sampark centre, she has had to return empty-handed, clueless about when she will get her pension.

Despite shortage of funds, PU plans to shell out Rs 11 lakh
Chandigarh, November 18
Panjab University is planning to shell out around Rs 11 lakh on the renovation of the house to be allotted to newly appointed Registrar GS Chadha on the campus. The proposal for seeking approval for this expenditure will be tabled at the Syndicate meeting, scheduled for November 22.

Don’t hold meetings in 5-star hotels, UT told
Chandigarh, November 18
The Union Ministry of Finance has banned holding of meetings and conferences at five-star hotels by the UT Administration at the cost of the state exchequer. The ministry has also put a rider on the purchase of new vehicles, foreign jaunts and creation of posts.

The cyber crime cell of the UT police today filed a chargesheet against three persons booked for creating a fake website (milkhasingh.co.in.) in the name of the legendary athlete, Milkha Singh.

Woman ends her life
Chandigarh, November 18
A 38-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself at a house in Sector 8 today. According to the police, the deceased has been identified as Harjit Kaur, who was staying alone in the house. Kaur is a divorce and hails from Kharar.

Major fire at Madanpur village in P’kula
Panchkula, November 18
A cluster of nearly 20 shanties in Madanpur village near Ashyana Colony was reduced to ashes in a major fire that broke out at about 3.30 pm today. No casualty was reported in the incident.

Gruesome murders and robberies at gunpoint have become the order of the day

The gruesome murder of six-year-old Mehram Singh Sandhu earlier this month after he was kidnapped by unknown persons is the second heinous incident after the brutal murder of a Kharar-based Congress leader Rajwant Singh Shergill in May to have occured this year.

NRIs protest in front of DC’s office
Mohali, November 18
Several non-resident Indians (NRIs) took to the streets here today in protest against grabbing of their properties and inaction by the Punjab Police in the cases. Led by Aam Aadmi Party local leader HS Shergill, six NRIs, including Iqbal Singh Ramoowalia, younger brother of former Union Minister Balwant Singh Ramoowalia, sat on a dharna in front of the office of Mohali Deputy Commissioner this afternoon.

Petrol pump owners told to install CCTVs

Passport adalats to be held from Nov 20
Chandigarh, November 18
The Regional Passport Office (RPO), Sector 34, Chandigarh, will hold Passport Adalats on its premises, on all working days from November 20 to December 2. The applicants who have submitted their applications on or before December 31, 2013, but have not been issued passport are required to attend a passport adalat from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm.

Pharma agent’s entry into PGI to be probed

A day after a PGIMER doctor identified and ousted a pharma agent allegedly posing as a medical staff and dealing with patients inside restricted areas, the authorities said today that the matter would be probed to find out how the agent had been moving around freely in patient areas.

Fabric stalls draw huge crowd at crafts mela

With the increasing popularity of the Chandigarh Crafts Mela, the footfalls have increased at Kalagram. The stalls set up here have varied artefacts and handicrafts. 250 patients examined at eye camp

A free eye check-up camp was organised by Grewal Eye Institute (GEI) near the Punjab Congress Bhawan in Sector 15 here today. A team of doctors from the institute examined around 250 patients on the occasion.

Merger of JBTs, TGTs sought

As many as 1,170 JBTs and TGTs working under the SSA in government schools of Chandigarh have started a campaign at the Masjid Ground in Sector 20 here. The teachers signed a “designed and coloured multiple petition” addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, HRD Minister Smriti Irani, Home Minister Rajnath Singh, MP Kirron Kher and state BJP president Sanjay Tandon.

Courts come down heavily on drug peddlers
Chandigarh, November 18
The UT District Courts today came down heavily on drug peddlers with four persons being convicted and three sentenced in separate cases under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

Wife, brother-in-law acquitted in case of abetment to suicide
Chandigarh, November 18
The court of District and Sessions Judge SK Aggarwal today acquitted a woman and her brother in a case of abetment of suicide. As per the prosecution’s case, Sunil (35), who was working as a security driver in a private company, had ended his life by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at his residence in Khuda Lahora on May 28, 2013.

Accident case
Taxi driver gets two-year jail term
Mohali, November 18
The Mohali court today awarded two-year jail term to a Tata Sumo taxi driver in a road accident in which three students died on the night of June 17, 2010. The accused, Sandeep Sharma, has been convicted of hitting the deceased’s car leading to the death of three students.

Three get 10-yr jail for robbery
Mohali, November 18
The Mohali District Courts sent three persons to jail for 10 years in a case of robbery here today. The Court of Additional District and Sessions Judge, Mohali, Jaswinder Shimar, awarded 10-year jail term, along with Rs 30,000 fine each, to the accused - Ashok Handa, Vijay Nath and Manak Nath - in about three-and-a-half-year-old case.

Sector 35 murder: Accused’s identity turns out to be fake
Chandigarh, November 18
The investigation by the Chandigarh Police in the case involving murder of 75-year-old woman in Sector 35 hit the roadblock after it was found that the accused servant had furnished a fake voter-ID card to the agency to get himself registered with it. The voter-ID card was found to be stolen from a house in Bihar.

Asphyxiation case
Canter driver booked for negligence
Zirakpur, November 18
The Dera Bassi police today booked the canter driver for alleged negligence in the asphyxiation case here. A resident of Ram Darbar, Nirmal Singh was booked under Section 304-A of the IPC on the statements of two persons who fell unconscious due to asphyxiation while travelling in the closed canter carrying 10 tandoors.

2 snatching incidents reported
Chandigarh, November 18
Two snatching incidents and a snatching attempt have been reported from the city. Rajni Sharma, a resident of Raipur Khurd village, stated that three unidentified motorcycle-borne persons sped away after snatching her purse at the Industrial Area, Phase I. She failed to note down the registration number of the motorcycle.

Minors held for snatching bid
Mohali, November 18
The Mohali police rounded up three minors while attempting to snatch a purse from a woman at Phase 3A market here today evening. DSP (City 1) Alam Vijay said the trio was riding a motorcycle, which they had stolen earlier.

Man held for bomb hoax
Chandigarh, November 18
The Chandigarh Police today arrested a Burail resident for making a hoax call on the PCR threatening that he would execute a bomb blast at the Burail police post. The police said in his call, the accused identified himself as Namo Narayan.

PU meet: Dharamvir bags gold in 400m race

Sprint runner Dharamvir Singh of Shri Guru Gobind Singh College, Sector 26, clocked down 50.16 seconds to win a gold medal in men’s final 400-m event during the ongoing Panjab University Annual Athletics Meet, held at the Athletics Ground of the PU, here, today.

Kabaddi gaining popularity, says Arjuna awardee

“Kabaddi is gaining popularity under the corporate sector,” believes Navneet Gautam, the 2007 Arjuna Awardee. Navneet, a left corner defender, who won two gold medals each in the Asian Games (Guangzhou and Doha), Asian Indoor Games (Vietnam and Macau) and World Cup, is in Chandigarh to attend the ONGC’s coaching camp for an inter-department kabaddi competition, along with other Indian team batch mates.

A video presentation by Dr SPS Grewal, CEO, Grewal Eye Institute (GEI), and also an adjunct professor at the Department of Ophthalmology, Fienberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University, Chicago, (Illinois) titled ‘Femtosecond laser cataract surgery: Tackling challenges and exploring the limits’ has been adjudged the “best of show” at the American Academy of Ophthalmology Annual Conference, 2014, held in Chicago recently.
