Consumer panel disposes of three cases
chandigarh, November 17 The cases were of Life Insurance Corporation of India, ICICI Lombard Insurance and Sahara India. All the cases related to 2009 and have primarily gone in favour of the consumer. Justice DK Jain, president, NCDRC, appreciated the Chandigarh Administration for its pro-active role in consumer protection cases. Advocate Pankaj Chandgotia said there were a total of 177 cases that would be heard by the NCDRC Bench in the coming days and maximum number of cases amounted to medical negligence. |

2-year jail for SI

chandigarh, November 17 The court sentenced Sub-Inspector (SI) Sakattar Singh to two years in jail and imposed a fine of Rs 6,000 on him. Co-accused in the case, his wife and son have been awarded one-year-jail for disappearance of evidence and criminal conspiracy.While pronouncing the order, the court stated that corruption devalues human rights, chokes development and undermines justice, liberty, equality, fraternity which were the core values in our preambular vision. “Therefore, the duty of the court is that any anti-corruption law has to be interpreted and worked out in such a fashion as to strengthen fight against corruption. That is to say in a situation where two constructions are eminently reasonable, the court has to accept the one that seeks to eradicate corruption to the one which seeks to perpetuate it,” said the court. As per the prosecution, on March 29, 2011, the CBI had arrested SI Sakattar, his wife Baljinder Kaur and son Baldeep Singh. The CBI had received a complaint that the SI was demanding and accepting Rs 15,000 as bribe, following a complaint by Ranjeet Singh, who was booked in a case of illegal confinement and rape.Ranjeet had been arrested and released on bail. But his car had been impounded from his house. He had complained to the CBI that the SI had been demanding Rs 20,000 for helping him get his car back. — TNS |

Bail plea of accused rejected

Mohali, November 17 Charanjit Kumar was Class IV employee and one of the accused in the case. He had moved an application for regular bail in the court of the Mohali Additional District and Sessions Judge. The lab had come under the scanner as a large number of cases of drug samples failed there. Later, the Tarn Taran police registered a case against the accused on October 27, 2013. The other accused included Dr Lekhraj, lab technician, Dr Rajwinder Singh, assistant chemical examiner, RK Mishra, junior assistant and Darshan Singh, peon at the lab. Later, the police also booked some other persons in the case. Charanjit Kumar is lodged at the Nabha Jail at present. |

Husband gets 10-year jail for attempt to murder
Mohali, November 17 The convict, a resident of Jagdishpur village, Bihar, had stabbed his wife, Muskan, five times in an inebriated condition on March 17, 2013. A case was registered at the Sohana police station in this connection. The accused had attacked his wife as he had doubts over her character. The victim was taken to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Sector 32, Chandigarh, where her life was saved. The convict has been shifted to the Ropar Jail today. |

Eight pickpockets arrested
Chandigarh, November 17 Those arrested are residents of Bihar and Jharkhand. Giving the information, Inspector Charanjit Singh, SHO, Mani Majra police station, said the arrest of a 12-year-old boy led to the whereabouts of kingpin Mithun (20), Vikas(19), Ajay (20) and Jitan(19) . “All the accused are arrested and booked on charges of theft and possession of stolen property under the Indian Penal Code. At first, we detained the 12-year-old, who was arrested earlier too” said Charanjit. On a tip off, the police raided a rented room in Hallo Majra from where all the accused were arrested. The police have recovered 21 mobile phones from their possession. The police are also expecting recovery of some vehicles. The accused used to sell mobile phones in their native states. The accused work in a planned manner. The minors get Rs 500 per day for stealing mobile phones while the adults divide the money among themselves after selling the phones.The recovered phones have been stolen from the National Crafts Mela, the mela at the Exhibition Ground in Sector 34, Sector 22 market and Sector 19 market. — TNS |

Chandigarh, November 17 In the men evening studies category, Sukhwinder won the gold medal by completing the race in 12.90 seconds. Varinder Singh of Guru Ram Das BEd College, Jalalabad, won the silver medal in 12.93 seconds while Harwinder Singh of JD College Education, Muktsar, and Vijay Kumar of Guru Ram Das BEd College, Jalalabad, attained the third and fourth place in 13.03 seconds and 13.08 seconds, respectively. In the 800 m event of the same category, Harpreet Singh from the Department of Evening Studies, Panjab University, claimed the top honour with a timing of 2.14.49 seconds while Ravi Kumar of DAV College of Education, Abohar, followed him at the second spot. He completed the patch in 2:16.90 seconds. Chandigarh, November 17 A trainee of CLTA (Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association), in the recently concluded The Tribune All-India Ranking Tennis Tournament, has not only impressed the coaches but also his superiors playing against him on the green layer. In this Rs 2 lakh prize money competition, Eklavya Singh surprised everyone by sailing into the pre-quarterfinals of the competition without any trouble. However, in the pre-quarterfinals, he went down giving a tough fight to his top seed rival. His coach Gajendra Singh also believes that his ward is among the rarest of talent in India. “He is great with the game even at this age. At this learning stage, when most of the players play in junior circuit, he is playing against players of senior circuit. If, he continues to perform at this pace, he would land up winning major tournaments in the coming future,” said Gajendra, who is also a coaching director at CLTA. Notably, Eklavya’s father Rajinder Singh is a triple jump gold medalist at the international level that boosts him to give his best. Eklavya is playing tennis from past four years and have bagged titles of major tournaments, including talent hunt series ranking tournament for (U-16) and (U-18) boys. He also featured in the ITF Junior Circuit Tennis Championship. In the upcoming months, he will be featuring in the ITF men’s championship. “I am still learning and will continue to work hard. Even in this tournament, I lost the quarterfinal berth due to my own mistakes. Playing in such a big tournament is a real good experience and facing some good fight will make me confident to move ahead in life. I want to attain the No. 1 spot in the world of tennis and for attaining my dream, I have to move in the right direction giving my best,” Eklavya said. |
