Dera Bassi, November 17
Taking a note of a news item ‘illegal mining goes unchecked’ published in Chandigarh Tribune on Monday, an official of mining wing of the Punjab Industry and Commerce Department, today visited the sites in Kakrali village near Mubarikpur to take a stock of the situation.

The official also found six deep pits in agriculture land from where the mining mafia had been quarrying minor minerals against the norms, claimed CL Garg, general manager (GM), mining wing of the department.

Garg also revealed that the mining inspector Baljit Singh, who visited the site, found the mafia men and heavy machinery missing from the site, today.

“I have asked the inspector to submit a report in this regard by tomorrow so that action could be initiated against the violators,” he added.

The Inspector will obtain the revenue records of the sites, where quarrying was done illegally, from the area ‘patwari’ so that notices could be served to the land owners, he added.

“We would have registered a criminal case against the owners, had we been able to impound machinery, involved in illegal mining, from the site. We will check if the mining was going on illegally after telling the revenue records and slap penalties on the violators as per the provisions of the mines and minerals (development and regulation (Act),” the GM claimed.

Sources in the department, revealed that the mining mafia had already got information about the inspection by the mining department so they preferred to suspending the excavation today. Moreover, the mining mafia has even parked their machinery in remote areas in surrounding villages.
