Gaana abhi baaki hai!
What is the logic behind putting the promotional song of a film at the end? Is it because the much-hyped dance number has nothing to do with the story-line or is it because the makers of the film want the audience to go home with a happy feeling?
Mona

You go to watch a film keeping in mind the glamorous images its song videos conjure-happy, hip and happening. But ultimately what is shown on the screen rarely and barely comes close to the first impression that you had earlier formed based on the promotional song. And at times, the plot has nothing to do with the song sequence.
Katrina Kaif and Salman Khan rocked in Ek Tha Tiger’s promotional song Mashallah
Katrina Kaif and Salman Khan rocked in Ek Tha Tiger’s promotional song Mashallah

The songs, which are constantly illuminating your television screen, do nothing to take the plot forward or lighten or brighten up the film. These songs, rather, spring up at the end of film, when the lights are on and credits are rolling.

Be it Salman-Katrina creating magic in Mashallah in Ek Tha Tiger or Sonakshi- Akshay rocking Party All Night in Boss or Veere Di Wedding in Entertainment, even the iconic Lungi Dance in Chennai Express, the songs are placed at the fag end, as if those peppy beats would leave you a with sweet taste after you have burnt a hole in your pocket for that expensive multiplex outing!

What purpose do these heavily promoted numbers actually have? Pull the audience to theatre (and disappoint) or sell the music or is it a cover up for a film that has failed to be what it aimed to be.

Prachi Sharma is a college-goer who makes it a point to be in the first-day first-show along with her gang. She, however, has learnt to keep a check on her expectations after many fiascos.

"When a movie is introduced, it's all so starry. The song, the rhythm, the picturisation, costumes, hair, expressions-all in place! But, more often than not, the film turns out to be the total opposite of what the promotional video showed," says Prachi, who would earlier bear the push and pull as a harried audience while exiting the hall and halting in-between to catch the number, the only highlight of two-hour- plus-long trauma.

Movie watching remains a norm with her gang but no longer do they raise their hopes based on the song. "There are times when you are in for a surprise," says Prachi, thinking long and hard to recall the last time she experienced that feeling, which was with Cocktail.

"The movie was good and so was the last song Second Hand Jawani."

Joining her is Ansh Singhal, an entrepreneur and hardcore movie buff. "The trend is not new, this has been happening right from Dhoom (2004). I, as an avid film watcher, don't attach the film to promotional songs any more. Film might belong to any genre but the last number would be a party song with lots of daru, dance and dames." Looking at all those hit songs rapper Honey Singh has given, we cannot help but agree.

Shirin Anandita, a Pollywood director, dismisses this trend as a huge promotion stunt. "Such songs gather lots of on-air time and lure the audience but might turn out to be bad experience for them," she says. Jazim Sharma, singer composer, who is getting his foothold in Bollywood films by giving music in two upcoming films, spills the beans, "Now in Mumbai, I realise how significant a role money and marketing play," says this Bhatinda-born ghazal singer. "Such numbers end up becoming party anthems. Yes, they might not have a direct connection with the film or the story but the audience get to witness a new flavour," says Jazim, who is only too happy to churn out a number if asked to. "I am too new to question the norms yet," he admits.

Music director Sanjeev Kapoor, who has given music to some 1,000 plus Punjabi albums, a few serials and films, opines, "It is a trend to have one selling song. Now, that anyone doesn't remember the song or the film the next week is a different matter. But the happy, noisy number that fits in any party scene works well as a promotional propaganda. That it matches with the look or feel of the film is of little consequence compared to how many viewers it can pull in the opening week," says the composer, who is working on two upcoming Punjabi films.

Bollywood filmmaker Rahul Mitra holds the industry guilty of using such a tactic. He says in his films, the songs share a connect. "One cannot deny that music plays a big role in making or breaking a movie. The audience today accept or reject a film on the basis of the first poster, teaser and song," says Rahul, who had Jai Govinda Jai Gopala at the end of Bullet Raja but injected stills from the film as the credits rolled.

He explains further, "For a filmmaker numbers are important. And it's youth that everyone is targeting as youngsters play an important role by talking about the films on social media. So, generally the last songs are peppy, party numbers but it would misguide the audience if that glamorous image doesn't gel with the actual film," says the producer, actor who is busy locking his next script.

A prayer gets answered
Rajpal Yadav, who is playing a victim in Bhopal: A Prayer for Rain, says his experiences in Bollywood helped him in his international project
Somya Abrol
Rajpal Yadav
Rajpal Yadav

Demons of 1984 continue to haunt; not just a chosen part of the nation. Apathy, however, is not an easy emotion to evoke. That's where artistes come in.

Completing his common-man trilogy with the upcoming film, Bhopal: A Prayer for Rain, actor Rajpal Yadav has taken a big leap towards Hollywood. "I never aimed for Hollywood. I did what came my way and made sure I did justice to it. In 2005, I received a mail saying they'd seen my work in Main Madhuri Dixit Banna Chahti Hoon and would like me to work on their next project. It's been nine years that the makers of the film have been researching on the topic. They'd made four drafts of the film and the final one is now finally up for release. This is how you make a thorough film, I understand now. For the first time in my career of about two decades, I feel entirely satisfied with a film," says Yadav, a National School of Drama (Delhi) pass-out.

Bhopal: A Prayer for Rain is being directed by Indo-American director Ravi Kumar, who originally belongs to Jabalpur, and also stars Mischa Barton, Martin Sheen, Kal Penn and Tannishtha Chatterjee.

In character's skin

"I'm playing the role of Dilip, a rickshaw puller from Bhopal. He is a survivor, a victim, of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy of December 3, 1984. In fact, it is also being released in India on December 5 this year, which marks the 30-year anniversary of the tragedy. Like Titanic had two sides of the story-one emotional (involving Jack and Rose) and the other technical, about what went wrong where - Bhopal also has two sides - one about the facts, happenings and impact of the tragedy and the other through the eyes of a wife and husband. Working for this film gave us actors an insight into what actually happened in Bhopal three decades ago; how the common man had to bear the brunt of one man's greed; how a grain of rice became his enemy. It was heart-rending. Thus, I dedicate this film and my role to all the victims of the tragedy," says Yadav, adding that the film will also act like a cautionary warning for the unforeseen future.

Giant leap

Stepping into the professionalism Hollywood is known for, Yadav says it's thanks to his unique experiences in Bollywood that he was able to handle an international film of such stature. "My biological mother gave birth to me, but what instilled life in me was cinema. It is thanks to the varied characters I've played in Bollywood that I was sure of pulling off a subject like Bhopal. The difference between the workings of the two industries is phenomenal, though. Bollywood has definitely more energy, but we don't know how to make the best of that energy. Hollywood, on the other hand, is very systematic. So, their limited energy too produces wonders, because of the system in place."

Any star-struck moments, working with Martin Sheen and Mischa Barton? "As a student of the NSD and the Bhartendu Academy of Dramatic Arts (Lucknow), we were taught to observe everyone from Charlie Chaplin to Robin Williams. So, I'm overwhelmed about working with the very same people we used to study about!"

Emotional shift

Once a comedian, always a comedian. To have made a smooth transition, in his first Hollywood film at that, is no mean feat. "In the 150 films I have done so far, I've consciously not repeated myself . So, to have made a transition from a so-called 'comedian' to a serious actor was not as big a deal. I believe that people shouldn’t use this word 'comedian' for me. A comedian can only entertain you in a certain manner. I, however, have adapted roles to various patterns, which makes me an entertainer; not just a comedian."

Connecting thread
Punjabi film Cross Connection promises a Hrishikesh Mukherjee-brand of comedy, thanks to director Nishant Bhardwaj
Jasmine Singh

His voice is a decibel louder than a whisper, as if the harmony of his body will get a jolt if he raises it a little higher. There is a small and thoughtful gap between his sentences, which he uses wisely to choose his words. Director Nishant Bhardwaj adds a subtle wit, and an oblivious seriousness in his talk as he along with his battery of cast and crew forms a genuine connect with his upcoming Punjabi film, Cross Connection.

For once, you don't see a singer-actor or actor-singer (identities are reversed) at the Morph Academy Sector-34, Chandigarh where they have all gathered, it is in fact the real actor, the subject that they are all more than willing to talk about. Produced by Jasbir Dhillon, a theatre actor himself, the film releases on December 19 and is about misunderstanding and misconceptions in life. Do you get a whiff of the master director Hrishikesh Mukherjee's films? Well, then you have probably hit the jackpot. The thoughtful director, Nishant has been Hrishikesh's assistant when the former went to Mumbai after giving his board exams. "We come from Ludhiana, but my family moved to Rajasthan. I went to Mumbai immediately after my tenth exams. There, someone asked me if I would like to assist a man, about whom I knew nothing. I met Hrishi da who asked me if I would like to assist him, to which I asked, what exactly should I be assisting you on," Nishant smiles. This makes him silent for a second or two, interrupting the conversation. "I get emotional when I talk about the person, the guru I learnt so much from," he adds. Though Nishant became a full-time director in 1992, he still assisted Hrishikesh Mukherjee in almost all films, and some 70 odd telefilms. He has been much appreciated for his works Choti See Mulaqaat, Chundari Odhasi Maharo Bir, Lala Hardol, Meree Pyaari Nimmo and Taanko Bhid Gayo.

If you are trying to establish his Punjabi film connect, well, this is how it goes. "The producer of the film, Jasbir Dhillon is from theatre background. He has done line production and casting for films like Dev D, Love Aaj Kal and various Gurdas Maan, Babbu Mann and Harbhajan Mann films. He asked me to direct a Punjabi film that I was sceptical from the word go." Nishant slowly carries on, injecting pauses whenever he feels right. "I don't understand how Punjabi film industry works, here maybe first they cast a singer-actor and then look at script, something I can never do, But Jasbir insisted and I took up this subject. In this film the subject is going to be the supreme. You will see a fair reflection of Hrishikesh style in the film," Nishant gives the mike to his lead actor, Garry Waraich, who makes his debut as a lead actor in the film. Garry has already done two films, Hashar and Ekam before Cross Connection.

"This is an interesting film, with a dose of sensible comedy and I am looking forward to it." Sumandeep is the leading lady who is a stage artiste, obviously excited about the film. And so is actor BN Sharma who plays the role of a strict Brigadier in the film. As the film releases in December, you can wait to see what connect it forms with you!

Cashing on innovation
Itzcash prepaid card promises to make your financial transactions a little easy
Amarjot Kaur

Here's a condensed view of an average middle class man's life, half of which is invested on earning, while the other half of it is spent on making a list of financial transactions, including the grocery, laundry, and electricity bills! Considering that the relevance of budgeting only restricts its significance hugely on the blue-collared strata of society and anticipating that the prices of any given commodity will only increase, the ItzCash Card Ltd came up with a prepaid financial card, which will ease the weight of your wallet while making the transaction simpler.

In conversation with Mudit Bhatnagar, ?vice-president, head marketing and corporate communications, ItzCash Card Ltd, who is in Chandigarh to flag off ItzCash on Wheels, a unique road show that will deliver prepaid cards, money transfer and other payment services to the customer's doorsteps we are briefed on the working of this magic card! "Well, ItzCash Card Ltd is India's multi-purpose prepaid payment solutions company that aims at making transactions easy, convenient, and accessible for potential customers," he begins. "Well, basically, the Itzcash prepaid card works like any other debit card, except that it requires a top up and the best part is that you don't need a bank account to get working with this card. However, if you want to transfer money into someone else's bank account, then you can pay him through Itzcash prepaid card," he shares.

So, if you do not want to carry cash, you may go to an Itzcash store and get a Rs 500 worth of a prepaid card, which will be credited with as much as Rs 400, informs Mudit while adding that all that you have to so is send your identity proof and mobile number. "We follow the guidelines of RBI as we are registered under it," says Mudit. Also, for those middle-class parents, who have been suffering at the hands of their smart generation children can get hold of their financial transactions too!

"Though the card cannot be issued to people below 18, but the best part about the card is that all the statement of all the transactions done with it will be given at any given time that the customer wants," shares Mudit.

Doc Talk
Go beyond the surface
Dr Vikas Sharma

One needs to be smart when selecting skin and hair care products to look smart. For this each person should know his/her skin type before using various products or exposing themselves to various agents/situations. We Indians have skin photo type 4 and 5. Next step is to understand if you have a dry skin, oily skin, combination skin, hairy skin (excessive hair growth), wrinkled skin, lustre-less hair and nails.

Dry skin occurs because of impairment in the uppermost skin compartment, resulting in the lack of retention of natural water and moisturiser. There is also less production of sebum by special skin glands which causes dry skin. The people with dry skin need non-foaming cleansers that will not strip protective lipids from skin surface. The moisturizers should be applied immediately after a wash or bath within 5 minutes preferably while the skin is still damp to trap water on skin's surface. Lotion moisturisers should be preferred over gels or creams. Toners and facial scrubs should not be used.

Oily skin occurs because of increased sebum production by special skin glands, which can be measured by sebometer. Those with oily skin should avoid wearing sunscreens which can cause acne and increase greasiness. Foaming cleansers and cleansers with salicylic acid should be preferred. Toners can be used. Only very light moisturisers if necessary should be applied. Gel and serum formulations are preferred over creams.

The third and an important skin type is sensitive skin. Individuals experiencing this condition report exaggerated reactions to topical personal care products that may or may not be associated with visible symptoms. Sensitive skin can be distressing to those who have it, because they can use only limited skin products.

People with sensitive skin have a delicate disrupted skin barrier function. These people show a strong inflammatory response. They have also been labelled as 'stingers' as they develop symptoms such as mild redness and feeling of flushing or fullness over cheeks or nose even during some stress or excitement. The persons with this skin type need specific medical face washes and moisturisers, should use only "fragrance free' products.

Melanin the pigment, which gives normal skin colour, also provides protection against DNA damage from ultraviolet radiation. Those having fairer skin have less melanin so they are more prone to get freckles, lentigos, skin cancer so they need to wear a broad spectrum sunscreen and use barrier creams more often. Those with darker skin types have more melanin. Those with darker skin should apply less oil or gel over hair. Nails provide protection to the ends of the fingers. Those with brittle nails are prone to develop adverse reactions to nail cosmetics. Those having red and swollen skin around nails should avoid wearing nail polish.

CELEB POINT
A love-hate relationship
Divya Dutta

A few years back, life was simpler, until you happened, my dear mobile! We, the people, had more leisure time and inclination to do simple things. Like, striking a conversation with a stranger while waiting at the airport, bus or railway station, taking out time for some fun with our elders, those good old games we played...pithu, kho kho, ludo, marbles... Going for dinner and having heart-to- heart chats with our dear ones. And above all, no intrusion in my 'me' time!

You my dear mobile, catch me unaware everywhere! I maybe writing, reading, in a deep conversation, you just buzz your presence and I have to drop everything to attend to you. If I don't, you make the caller assume so much... May be they feel I am ignoring them!

Also, my dear mobile, ever since you came into our lives, you expect all attention. Now, no more at airports, buses or trains, I see people talking to each other, laughing their hearts out! They are all looking deep into your eyes, checking a FB or twitter status or playing a game...Everyone seems to just hold you in their hands and forget everything else…Over a dinner table, there is silence because you are being looked at all the time! You just stopped the process of bonding with others. I do love giving you time. But did you have to be this addictive and demanding that I had to sacrifice other simpler beautiful aspects and people in my life because of you. My eyes get tired looking at you, I feel drained spending all my time just with you. Life's passing by, and I am just discussing you and involved with you and the messages and voices you bring!

Bas bahut hua... I, dear mobile love you and know that in today's times, I need you. But like in every relationship, you need to give me some space, some breather. Or, this love affair might end. Hope you take my message seriously.

Yours truly

Your lover and victim

Master Chef
Awesome apples!
Kandla Nijhowne

Apples literally flood the market at this time of the year, beckoning us to pick them and take them home to our fruit bowl. I love the crisp crunch when one bites into a juicy golden Delicious, though I fear that I'm also probably consuming some pesticide that is sitting on the shiny skin. It is advisable to pull the peeler out of the kitchen drawer due to the same apprehension. Apple and cinnamon is a match made in heaven! Do try to grind fresh cinnamon at home. The aroma is unbeatable in this warm and tantalizing winter dessert!

Apple crisp

  • 1½ kilos apples of your choice
  • 2-3 tbsp lemon juice
  • ¾ tsp freshly ground cinnamon
  • ¾ cup maida
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ cup grain sugar (plus a little extra)
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 8 tbsp cold butter

Method

  • Pre heat the oven to 180 degree C (375 degree F)
  • Peel, core and slice the apples into medium chunks.
  • Sprinkle with lemon juice, cinnamon powder and half a cup of grain sugar. Shift into a shallow oven proof dish.
  • Cut the cold butter into small cubes.
  • Use a wide basin or bowl, add the maida, salt, brown sugar and about 2-3 tbsp of grain sugar.
  • Use two forks or a balloon whisk to combine the dry ingredients.
  • Now scatter the cubes of butter over the dry ingredients, rub in with your fingertips till the mixture looks crumbly.
  • Add oats to the bowl, squeeze till you have blended them in. You should encourage little clumps of the mixture to remain so. They will add texture to the final baked dish!
  • Arrange this pebbly crumble on to the prepped apples in the shallow dish.
  • Bake on a mid-level rack of the oven. This way, you will get an even browning, but not a scorched surface.
  • The apple crisp will be ready when the top is golden and bubbling, between 45-55 minutes.
  • Serve warm with vanilla ice cream, runny custard or dairy cream.

A date with graffiti

Ali Zafar, Ranveer Singh and Parineeti Chopra painted their town red, literally. The three of them did graffiti, inspired by their upcoming film Kill Dil, on the walls of Mahim. Ali is a painter, but this is the first time he has done graffiti. He painted himself in his Kill Dil avatar. It was a very life like impression. Parineeti painted a heart inspired by the theme of Kill Dil. While Ranveer painted words that describe him and his personality. A huge crowd had gathered to watch them at work. The actors used a lot of colours and spray paints. The walls looked quite bright and vibrant after they were done.

On the junior Kim

Reality TV star Kim Kardashian stepped out carrying a very special bag painted by her daughter North West. The Keeping Up with the Kardashians star shared a photo of her Hermes bag which features North's hand paint.

"Me and my bae out today. Wearing my favourite bag painted by my little North," she wrote. The bag is decorated with some colours including orange, yellow and blue. A hand print presumably by the 16-month-old North can be seen at the centre of the canvas. The 34-year-old reality star, meanwhile, sported a gray coat over a white dress and applied natural-looking make up for the outing. We wonder what does Kanye West have to say about his daughter's creative baby steps. — PTI

A still from Elementary
Drama galore: A still from Elementary

The fast-paced modern-day crime drama, Elementary, starring Jhonny Lee Miller as Sherlock Holmes and Lucy Liu as Dr Joan Watson is back in India exclusively on AXN. This exciting season has the quirky detective return to New York after his stint with MI6. However, hold on, this season sees a brand new entrant or the 'new Watson' as the detective's new apprentice portrayed by Ophelia Lovibond. Sherlock's new protégé, Kitty Winter (Ophelia Lovibond), complicates the thorny re-union post the professional break-up of Holmes and Watson in the previous season.

A romantic sojourn

Rohan Mehra, who was last seen in Bade Achche Lagte Hain, will be returning to the small screen with Yeh Hai Ashiqui. Rohan says, "Yes I am doing an upcoming episode of Yeh Hai Aashiqui, but it is too early to speak about it."

Back with a bang

Raj Babbar is all set to return to television with a new action show titled Pukaar. The 62-year-old actor will be essaying the role of a father to an army son played by VJ-actor Rannvijay Singh. The show is expected to air soon on Life Ok.

The sister act!

Nigaar Khan, who was last seen in Main Naa Bhoolungi, recently made a wild card entry in the Bigg Boss house. However, the actress says that she is not thinking about winning the show. Her sister Gauhar Khan was the winner for the previous season. Let us see if her sister manages to do so too.

Over and out

Buzz is that the much talked about jodi of Aaliya (Preetika Rao) and Zain (Harshad Arora) will soon bid farewell to TV as Beintehaa will go off air because of poor ratings. The daily soap is expected to telecast its last episode on November 21.

It hurts!

Injuries during a shoot are not very uncommon these days with the young brigade of actors. Under the pressure of continuous shooting schedules to create a bank of episodes, actors usually have to forget the pain and give it their best shot. Vishal Vashishtha, who plays the role of Baldev, in Star Plus' Ek Veer Ki Ardaas…Veera, had to go through the same pain. In a recent action sequence that required him to fight the goons, the actor accidentally sprained his left ankle. We wish Vishal a speedy recovery!

In the house

Former Bigg Boss contestant, Rahul Mahajan's wife, Dimpy, is the latest celebrity to enter the reality TV show. We caught up with her for a quick chat before she entered the house.

Are you excited to be a part of the show?

I have watched every season of Bigg Boss. To me, being on the show is like a dream come true.

How do you plan to survive on the show?

I will not be acting on Bigg Boss. Audiences will get to see only the real me. They can expect a lot of fun.

Since you have been watching the show, do you have any favourites?

I would form an opinion once I am inside the house.

Did Rahul Mahajan give you any tip?

Yes, he warned me to be careful and said that there are no friends inside the Bigg Boss house.

Is there anything you will miss?

I think I will miss fish curry and rice.
