Snag in engine delays arrival of Shatabdi Express at Kalka

Kalka, November 11
The Shatabdi Express coming from Delhi reached Kalka nearly two hours late after its engine developed a snag at Surajpur village near here this afternoon.

The train that was scheduled to arrive at the Kalka railway station at 11.45 am reached at about 1.40 pm. The delay also affected the departure of the Kalka-Shimla Himalayan Queen by an hour and fifty minutes.

Station manager, Kalka, Vinay Kumar Arora said after receiving the information about the snag, a separate engine was sent from Kalka to bring the train.

The traffic on the busy Pinjore-Nalagarh and the Pinjore-Kalka highways was disrupted for over two hours as level crossings on both the highways remained closed till the train left the area.

Capt Rohit Kaushal’s martyrdom day
Haryana Guv pays tributes

Haryana Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki paid tributes to Capt Rohit Kaushal on his nineteenth martyrdom day at his ancestral village, Jaluali, near here today.

Capt Kaushal had died fighting militants in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir in 1995.

The Governor laid a wreath at his memorial during a function also attended by officers and jawans of the 18 Punjab Battalion, to which the captain belonged.

Ambala MP Rattan Lal Kataria and Panchkula MLA Gian Chand Gupta also paid tributes to the martyr.

A large number of Army officers and residents attended the function.

Haryana Govt files appeal in HC

Less than two months after lack of evidence led to the acquittal of Doon MLA Ram Kumar Chaudhary and 11 others in the Jyoti murder case, Haryana today filed an appeal before the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

The appeal came just a day after Baldev Raj Mahajan took over as the state’s Advocate General.

In its judgement, the trial court had stated that it was of the considered opinion that the prosecution had not been able to substantiate the charges attributed to the accused. “Hence, all accused are acquitted of the charges framed against them while giving them the benefit of the doubt,” stated the ruling.

In the detailed 80-page judgement, Additional District and Sessions Judge Roopam Singh, while terming the prosecution theory “shaky”, had also pointed out glaring flaws in the entire investigation.

CDLU official remanded

The Executive Engineer-cum-Estate Officer of Chaudhary Devi Lal University (CDLU), Sirsa, was remanded in judicial custody by a local court here today.

The official, Satish Kumar, was caught red-handed by the Haryana Vigilance Bureau while accepting a bribe of Rs 75,000 from the complainant, Harish Kumar, in lieu of passing a bill of Rs 25 lakh. The complainant owns Friends Security Agency in Sector 20.

The bureau had registered a case against the accused under Section 7/13 of the Prevention of Corruption Act here on Monday.

CHART trainee Shashikant upsets Rohit

CHART trainee Shashikant Rajput beat 8th seed Rohit Kumar in straight sets during a match of the boys’ (U-16) category of the ongoing CLTA-AITA Championship Series (CS-7) Tennis Tournament, being held at the CLTA courts in Sector 10, here, today.

Shashikant used good variation to upset experienced Rohit (6-4 and 6-2). In another on-sided win, CLTA trainee Rishabh Sharda overpowered Ishan Sethi in a one-sided match (6-0 and 6-2). Rishabh conceded only two games and booked his place in the quarter-finals.

CHART trainee Ramanjot Dhindsa defeated Sohraab Singh in a marathon three-setter match. Ramanjot lost the 1st set 5-7. However, he bounced back strongly to take the 2nd set 6-2. In the final set, Ramanjot outclassed his rival 6-4.

In the girls’ (U-16) category, Princy Panchal upset 7th seed Vriti Panwar in a convincing straight set victory (6-1, 6-3) while Luvya Lamba upset seed 3 Jahnavi Shivran in straight sets (6-0 and 6-4).

In a long-rallied match Alisha Menon posted a close set win against Saumya Saxena.

Alisha blanked her opponent in the first set 6-0 while went down in the second set 4-6.

In the last set, Alisha reverted back strongly to win 6-3. Also, Mahak Khurmi named a closely contested match against 5th seed Khushbeen Kaur 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.

PU lift inter-college women’s cricket title

The Panjab University campus women’s cricket team lifted the title of PU Inter-College Cricket Championship for Women (A-division) here today. In the final match, the winning side defeated the KCW, Ludhiana, by 7 wickets. The losing side, while batting first, posted 168 runs in the allotted slot of 40 overs. The team’s innings was studded with an unbeaten contribution of 67 runs off 93 balls with seven boundaries by Jaspreet. Skipper Neha Singh also played an important innings by contributing 24 runs off 35 balls.

Soma (14 runs), Sandeep (18 runs), Aman (5 runs), Ruchi Kapoor (9 runs) and Harwinder (7 runs) remained the other run-getters for the side. For the bowling side, Asha claimed 2 for 30 and Dikhsha Sharma 2 for 20. While Gagandeep claimed 1 for 28. In reply, the winning side scored 171 runs in 30.2 overs. Opener Asha Negi (36 runs off 43 balls), Diksha Sharma (47 off 37), Amita (40 off 73), Mamta (13 runs) and Simran (2 runs) helped the team achieve the target. SGGS College claim powerlifting title

The men's powerlifting team of the SGGS College, Sector 26, won the Panjab University Inter-College Powerlifting Championship for Men (A division) with 17 points.

The championship concluded today.

The team of Gobindgarh Public College, Alour, secured the second place with 15 points while KLSD College, Ludhiana, ended on the third position with 5 points. Arya College, Ludhiana, attained the fourth position with 4 points.

AF Hockey meet
Training Command win opening game

Chandigarh, November 11
The hockey team of the Training Command edged past Maintenance Command 2-1 in the opening game of the Air Force Hockey Championship that began at the Hockey Stadium of Air Force Station, 3BRD, here, this evening.

The Training Command side claimed the lead in the 10th minute after Mandeep drew the first blood.

He posted the ball over goal line with dodge passing the rival’s defence line.

Left-in Suyal doubled the lead in the 35th minute after surpassing the Maintenance Command’s custodian with ease. After sealing the first half in their favour, the winning side continued to play well. However, they failed to extend the lead.

In the proceedings, Maintenance Command reduced the margin through Ajay Kumar, in the 60th minute, who smartly placed the ball in goal nets on an awarded penalty corner.

Earlier, Air Commodore AK Barik, Air Officer Commanding, 3BRD, inaugurated the Air Force Hockey Championship today.

A total of eight command teams from the Air Force are participating in the meet. The teams are divided in two pools.

The matches are played on a league-cum-knock out basis.

The final of the championship will be played on November 18.

GHS-40 pip Maloya school in kabaddi

The kabaddi team of Government High School, Sector 40, defeated Government Model Senior Secondary School, Maloya, in the opening game of the Inter-School Kabaddi Tournament for Girls (U-17), being organised by the UT Sports Department at the Sports Complex, Sector 42, here, today.

The side named the match at 39-28. In the second match, Government Model High School, Manimajra, overpowered Government Model High School, Sector 22 (36-09).

In the matches of boys’ (U-17) category, Government Senior Secondary School, Dhanas, beat Government High School, Dadu Majra (34-27), Government Model High School, Sector 12, overpowered Government Senior Secondary School, Maloya (59-23), Government High School (Colony), Maloya, defeated Government Model Senior Secondary school, Sector 10 (67-57), and Government Model High School, Sector 41, beat Government Model School, Indira Colony (34-06). — TNS
