Thomas Cook to pay Rs 1 lakh to complainant

The UT Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has directed a prominent tour operator to pay Rs 1 lakh compensation for deficiency in service as he caused anguish, panic and distress to the complainants on a tour to Europe.

The consumer court has also directed Thomas Cook to pay Rs 11,000 towards litigation expenses besides Rs 1 lakh as compensation to a couple who was distressed on a tour operated by it.

The complainant Sudeep Mahajan, a resident of Sector 36 and an advocate by profession, filed a complaint under Section 12 of the Consumer Protection Act, 1986, against Thomas Cook (India) Ltd. In his complaint he alleged that in February, 2013, Thomas Cook announced by way of an advertisement published in a newspaper, a seven days tour programme called "Europe Just For You" priced at Rs 71,900. It was promised that the tour would begin from German city Munich and, thereafter, it was to take the group, as per the published itinerary, to Black Forest, Heidelberg, Cologne, Brussels, Amsterdam and Paris. The complainant went to the office of Thomas Cook where the official of Thomas Cook told him that the tour would begin from Munich and included the city tour on the first day of the tour.

The complainants opted for this tour and made the initial payment of Rs 1,00,000 on April 24 by way of a cheque. The complainants were to travel to England in May end or the first week of June, 2013, so they booked their tickets from London to Munich flight with Lufthansa Airlines for June 24, 2013. The complainants were to join the tour with the group in Germany on this date. It was alleged that the tour group instead of assembling at Munich was made to assemble at Frankfurt airport, due to which, they had to face a lot of problem and harassment. The complainants were not informed that there was a change in the tour itinerary and instead of the tour starting from Munich it would start from Frankfurt. When the complainants reached the hotel at Bensheim they were financially drained, As a result, the complainants could not enjoy the tour thereafter.

Attempt to murder: Man gets five years in jail

The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge KK Kareer today sentenced a 34-year-old property dealer to five-year imprisonment in an attempt-to-murder case in which a father -daughter duo was brutally attacked.

The court sentenced Pankaj Pratap Singh, a resident of Mohali to five years in jail and also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on him.

The court also ordered that of the total amount recovered as fine Rs 10,000 will go to the victims 61-year-old Suresh and his daughter Shweta, who were left critically injured in the attack.

“The prosecution has succeeded in establishing the guilt of the accused beyond reasonable doubt, they are held guilty of committing an offence punishable under Section 307 of the IPC,” said the court.

As per the prosecution case, the incident occurred on April 9, 2013 when Suresh Kumar Sharma, who retired from Punjab Turbo Ltd, was at his home with his 31-year-old daughter, Shveta Sharma.

The accused, Pankaj Pratap Singh, entered the first floor of Sharma’s house with his accomplice around 1.45 pm to discuss about a property deal worth over Rs 2 crore.

The discussions over sale of property soon went awry and heated arguments began which soon turned violent.

Pankaj and his accomplice then attacked Sharma on his face and stomach with a sharp-edged weapon. His daughter Shveta Sharma tried to intervene and she too was attacked. The accused had then fled leaving the two in a pool of blood.

Soaked in blood, SK Sharma rang the doorbell of his neighbours, but no one was at home.

He then ran downstairs and rang the doorbell of the ground floor.

By the time the door was opened, a schoolteacher, Deepika, saw Sharma soaked in blood and rushed him to Fortis Hospital in Mohali in her car for treatment.

Missing former Congress leader’s mother arrested
Was allegedly involved in a fraud case at Faridkot along with her son; Vibhore Batra likely to surrender

In yet another trouble for missing former Congress leader Vibhore Batra who has been giving sleepless nights to bureaucrats and high profile persons in Punjab and Haryana, the Punjab The police today arrested his 60-year-old mother, Arun Batra.

Sources said that after the arrest of his mother, there was a possibility of Vibhore surrendering before the police.

A team of Faridkot police today landed at the residence of Batra in Sector 4 to arrest her. After Batra went missing, many persons, including officers surfaced stating that Vibhore had duped them of lakhs in the name of investment. In the case at Faridkot, his mother was also booked in the fraud case.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) SS Kahlon said, “Our team is still on the way. We have arrested his mother.

They have also duped a Punjab resident Sandeep Brar, alias Sunny.”

The SSP said that Vibhore’s close aides, Vikram, alias Chaffy, another local leader, and Garima, a resident of Africa, had also been booked but were not traced.Even after 20 days, the Panchkula police has still not been able to trace Vibhore Batra.

Batra went missing on September 23 after his mother lodged a kidnapping case. After that, former Haryana DGP Lakshman Dass got a case registered against him for duping him of Rs 25 lakh, said the police.

Man in SUV tries to run over cops

Mohali, October 17
At least two policemen sustained injuries when an unidentified person, said to be a drug addict, in a SUV tried to run over the former on being checked by the officials last night at Sector 68, here. The accused has been booked under Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of his duty), 353 (assault to deter public servant from his duty) and 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) of the IPC at the Phase VIII Police Station.

The police said the person was consuming drugs in his Mahindra XUV 500 when he was spotted by the police team at around 9.15 pm on Thursday.

“We got a tip-off in this regard. When we reached near his vehicle, which was parked near the local market, he started the SUV and tried to run over all of us,” said a policeman, adding that they (the cops) managed to save their lives by jumping out of the way of the vehicle.

The SUV was bearing a Chandigarh registration number, the police said.

The injured were taken to a hospital where they were discharged after treatment.

No arrest has been made so far in this regard.

Boy goes missing from Snehalaya

The Chandigarh Police have registered a case of kidnapping at Sector 39 police station after they received a complaint that a 12-year-old boy had gone missing from Snehalaya, a home for the destitute and abandoned children at Maloya, in Sector 39.The police said an investigation has been initiated. Earlier this month, two girl inmates had fled from Snehalaya after scaling the boundary walls.

Purse snatched

An unidentified person snatched the purse of a Sector 38 resident and ran away from the spot. The police said victim Sunaina Sharma alleged that her purse containing mobile phone, Rs 4,000, driving licence and other important documents was snatched by a pedestrian at Sector 38/40 light point.

The Tribune Cup national ranking tennis tournament
Mohit Mayur, Rashmi win titles

In a closely contested final, top seed qualifier Mohit Mayur routed his opponent Hadin Bawa to bag the men’s singles title of The Tribune Cup National Ranking Rs 2 lakh Men’s & Women’s Tennis Tournament at the CLTA in Sector 10 here today. The men’s final lasted over two hours and 30 minutes. Both the players exhibited some high class tennis.

Mohit won the first set 6-3. However, Hadin upped his performance in the second set and took a 4-1 lead. Hadin maintained the lead to finish the set 6-3. In the final set, both the players held their serve till the fifth game when Mohit broke Hadin’s serve and finished the set 6-3 to lift the title.

The women’s final lasted 15 minutes longer as Rashmi and Manya played from the baseline and rallied well. Both the players displayed some good quality ground strokes. Eighth seed Manya raced with an early lead and won the first set 6-3. But qualifier Rashmi raised her level in the next set and played more aggressive tennis. She conceded only one game in the second and third sets to win the title 3-6, 6-0, 6-1.

The women’s doubles title went to GS Vasavi and Preethi Sriniwasan. They defeated Arushi Bhasin and Nida Kamal 6-3, 7-6.

Sarvjit Singh, Finance and Sports Secretary, UT Administration, gave away prizes to the men’s finalists. Former Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court, Justice SS Sodhi (retd), who is also the president of the Tribune Trust and CLTA patron, gave away the prizes to women’s finalists.
