Scant regard for Home Guards personnel
Instead of performing duty, they were asked to stop players from carrying dusty shoes on courts

Dozens of police personnel deployed in and around the indoor basketball courts of the sports complex in Sector 42 were left perplexed while performing their duty.

Despite having no work of maintaining law and order, during the ongoing 31st Youth National Basketball Championship, the personnel from the Department of Home Guards and Chandigarh Police have been deployed in shifts to safeguard the venue. And to much surprise, some were even asked to stop players from carrying dusty shoes on the basketball courts.

“We are just obeying the orders. Even we don’t understand the reason of our appointment. There are almost 35 personnel of Home Guards and Beat Department who are appointed to perform the duty,” said a personnel.

Also, a few of the appointed personnel were caught performing duties that can be easily head by the hired security staff of the UT Sports Department. “The coaches have asked us to stop players from carrying dusty shoes to the courts. We haven’t joined police to safeguard the indoor courts or to stop these players from carrying dusty shoes inside the arena. The superiors should understand the nature of urgency before ordering deployment of force,” said a police official.

Notably, the finance-cum-sports secretary is the chairman of the same tournament along with other political weights of city. In past, the city has hosted many national level tournaments, including National School Games, JP Atray All-India Cricket Tournament that witnessed presence of the Indian cricket team members, All India Administrator’s Football Cup and many others, whereas no special deployment was initiated in these tournaments.

A senior police official of Chandigarh police, preferring anonymity, said, “Deployment of personnel might have undertaken considering the law and order situation. Otherwise, the protocol remains to cover important events or teams during their visit to city. Checking dusty shoes on the courts is no duty to perform. The superiors should ask the organisers to maintain the dignity of policing,” said the official.
