MC munshi gets 3-yr jail for graft

Chandigarh, September 25
The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Shalini S Nagpal today sentenced a work munshi with the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation to three-year imprisonment in a corruption case. The accused, Jagan Nath, has been convicted under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 4,000 on him.

According to the prosecution, the case was registered on May 28, 2012. The convict, Jagan Nath, took Rs 5,000 as bribe from a woman labourer employed with the roads division of the MC to release her pension dues.

The complainant, Gandhi, was the son of the woman labourer, who was being harassed to pay a bribe by the work munshi.

The complainant’s mother, Iyamma, had taken voluntary retirement in February 2012. The file pertaining to her payment due on her retirement was sent to the office of the Executive Engineer of the MC and an amount of around Rs 7 lakh was due.

The file was pending with Jagan Nath and he initially demanded Rs 10,000 and then reduced the bribe demand to Rs 5,000. Iyamma’s son Gandhi then gave a complaint to the Vigilance Department of the UT police following which a trap was laid and the accused arrested while taking the bribe.

2 more held in P’kula murder case

Panchkula, September 25
The Panchkula police today arrested two more persons in connection with the gruesome murder of Harikesh Singh. Earlier, the police had arrested Brij Pal and his wife Guddu Rani for the murder.

The accused, Thakur Yadav and Maninder, were reportedly with the couple when Harikesh Singh was murdered, said the police.

Brij Pal and his wife Guddu Rani had given this information to the police during their interrogation following which the arrests were made.

According to the police, Brij Pal had taken the duo along with him when his wife called him up stating that Harikesh Singh had come to meet her.

“The duo used to tell Brij Pal that Harikesh Singh used to keep an evil eye on Guddu Rani,” said the police.

The sensational murder of Harikesh Singh came to light after his body parts were recovered from a manhole in Panchkula.

The body parts had been packed in polybags and dumped in the manhole.

Lawyer robbed of gold jewellery

A city-based lawyer Arvind Thakur alleged that his driver robbed him of his gold jewellery worth several lakhs on Tuesday night.

Thakur alleged that after returning from a party he forgot to close the door of his house in Sector 38 (west). “Driver Gurpreet Singh came back after dropping me at my house”, Thakur alleged.

He further said that the driver hit him with a rod on his head and he became unconscious after which he robbed him of the jewellery he was wearing.

The police have registered a case at the Sector 39 police station and started an investigation.

Fake goods worth lakhs seized

The cyber cell of the UT police today recovered a catch of fake goods of reputed brands worth several lakhs, which were sold to customers online.

The police conducted a raid at a godown in Industrial Area, Phase I. Fake products of international brands including watches, garments, wallets and shoes were seized from the godown.

AS Cheema, DIG, UT, who monitored the raid at the godwon, said that the accused who were still at large were duping innocent buyers by selling fake products. “We had received over eight complaints in which customers bought branded watches ranging between Rs 50,000 to Rs 1.5 lakh which turned out to be duplicate”, the DIG stated.

He further stated that the accused used to operate on different websites to dupe the customers. “The customers were shownoriginal products on the website, however, the duplicate products were delivered to them”, DIG added.

The olice had recently received a complaint from Maninder Grover, a resident of Sector 38, who had alleged that he bought a Rolex watch through the website worth Rs 59,000, which he later discovered was fake.

Police officials said that Grover was lured as discounts were offered on the website and so he purchased the watch. However, later on when he showed the watch to authorised dealers they claimed it to be a Chinese make replica of the original watch.

The police sources said that more raids were expected to be made in the coming days. Probably this was the biggest ever catch of fake goods caught by the Chandigarh Police.

They further said that the accused identified as Gaurav Bhatia, a resident of Sector 47, and Dixit, a resident of Sector 40, were still at large. The accused had taken the godown on rent.

Chain snatched

Snatchers targeted another city resident in Sector 47 yesterday. The miscreants fled after snatching the gold chain from a woman. The Chandigarh Police have failed to nab the snatchers as over 10 incidents have been reported in less than 10 days.

Victim Charanjit Kaur Kohli, a resident of Sector 47, alleged that two unidentified miscreants riding on a motorcycle fled after snatching her gold chain from near her residence.

The complainant failed to note down the registration number of the motorcycle.

Nine snatching incidents have been reported since September 15. Besides, a snatching bid was made on a woman.

A case has been registered at the Sector 31 police station and a probe is on.

Mohali lad reaches tennis quarterfinals

Mohali, September 25
Navraj Brar, a student of Shemrock School, Sector 69, here, reached the quarterfinals of the invitational Asian Tennis Federation tournament for boys (U-14), played at the BKSP in Dhaka (Bangladesh).

Playing in the boys' (U-14) category, he won both matches. In the opening match, he defeated Shaiket Shahrier of Bangladesh (2-6 5-7).

In the next match, he overpowered Michael Francis of Philippines (6-0, 6-0). Now, Navraj will compete against Naimul Islam of Bangladesh in the quarterfinals.

PU Campus pip Ludhiana college

The cricket team of the Panjab University Campus defeated SCD Government College, Ludhiana, by 7 wickets in the ongoing Panjab University Inter-college Cricket Tournament for Men, here, today.

The visiting side was restricted on a mere total of 198 runs in 31.2 overs.

Campus’ Sachin claimed 4 for 37 and Gurmukhpreet took 2 for 27. For the batting side, Abhinabh (38 runs) and Karan Bhatti (38 runs) remained the main scorers for the side.

In reply, the PU side posted a win in 32.2 overs with Shivam Bhambri (81 runs) leading the score chart while Veerkaran Goyal (46 runs) and Jaskaranvir (40 runs) following the honours. Vishvanath claimed 1 for 26 for Ludhiana.

In the second match, DAV College, Sector 10, defeated PG Government College, Sector 11, by 5 wickets. The losing side while batting first posted 198 runs in 47.8 4 overs. Dinesh (59 runs), Atul (34 runs) and Manpreet (25 runs) scored the lion’s share while for the bowling side Aman Bharti (3 for 21) and Gurinder (3 for 32) claimed three wickets each.

Chasing the target, DAV College won the match in 31.4 overs with Parveen (66 runs) and Ankit (55 runs) scoring the major share. For the bowling side, Gurnam claimed 3 for 46.

In the last match, SGGS College, Sector 26, defeated DAV College, Malout, by 145 runs. Batting first, the winning side posted a healthy total of 213 runs in 30 overs. Rahul (71 runs), Vineet (42 runs) and Ankit (22 runs) added to the team’s total. For the bowling side, Gurpreet (2 for 35) and Gurinder (2 for 40) claimed two wickets each. The Malout college folded their innings on a mere total of 68 runs in 18.5 overs. Rajat Thakral remained the only main scorer who contributed 22 runs. For the bowling side, Aayush claimed 5 for 14 whereas Harmanjit took 3 for 11.

City’s Vaneeta, Gagan to take part in Raid-de-Himalaya

Chandigarh’s Vaneeta Kang and Gagan Brar will compete in the high-risk and Speed Xtreme category of the 16th Maruti Suzuki Raid-de-Himalaya competition starting from October 3 to 11.

Nearly 240 champion rallyists are competing in the Maruti Suzuki Raid-de-Himalaya rally, including 50 competitors in Rally Moto (motorcycles and quads), 41 teams in Rally Xtreme (4X4) and 51 teams in Rally Adventure. The event will be held from October 3 to 11.

Categories at the Raid

Raid Xtreme (4X4) - All-out speed category in which 41 teams are competing (each team comprises a driver and a navigator), Raid Xtreme (motorcycles and quads) - in which 50 bikers are competing,

Raid Adventure - This category follows the time-speed-distance format in which 51 riders are participating.
