Giving a face to the shadow
There’s a story within all of us. How or whether we choose to narrate it or not gives impetus to our perception. In search of a similar impetus for his subjects, 22-year-old Vishal Verma sets off into the city every morning, with his Canon in tow, to tell stories this urban generation would steer clear of otherwise.
Taking cue from Humans of New York (HONY), Vishal took to the streets of Chandigarh to create a medium with Humans of Chandigarh, a photo blog page on Facebook. With nearly 10,000 ‘likes’ already, Vishal posts one picture (or more) a day, accompanied by a short story or a life excerpt from the subject's life. "The idea is to bring happiness to an average person's life. We all see beggars on the street from the window of our car. None of us would, however, bother to so much as smile at them. Through my page, when youngsters recognise these poor kids' faces, and just say a simple 'Hi' to them, it makes me feel like I'm doing my bit. My page can't help them monetarily, but it can help make their everyday better. And there's no greater joy than connecting with people. These momentary changes are what make a big difference," says Vishal. Recalling one of the many encounters he's had with his subjects, Vishal says, "There's this man in Sector 17, who plays the flute and sells his music's audio CDs in one of the streets. He's been sitting there for the past 40 years, lending melody to people's evenings with his instrument. After I posted his picture and story on the page, he told me people have been coming up to him, asking his name, buying his CDs, which was not the case earlier." And how does it pay the bills? "It doesn't. The immense pleasure and serenity this 'job' profile has given me is incomparable. No job in the world can help me help people bring a smile to their face the way Humans of Chandigarh does. I'm at an age and stage where I can continue to do what satisfies my soul for the next couple of years, at least," says Vishal. When asked how he explains to his subjects what he's about and why he'd like to click them, he says, "The people I click are not like you and me. They are happy being clicked by a stranger. As we climb the social ladder, I think we become more judgmental and skeptical about everything and everyone around us." And where does he plan to go from here? "I like this space I'm living in. It's comforting. If only life could continue to be as
serene." somya@tribunemail.com
What is Humans of New York (HONY)?
Humans of New York is a Facebook page, and now a website, being run by independent writer-photographer Brandon Stanton since 2010. Basically, as Brandon likes to put it, it's an exhaustive catalogue of New York's inhabitants. Brandon collects quotes and short stories from people he meets on the street and posts their pictures with captions on the HONY page. With over eight million followers on social media, HONY provides a worldwide audience with daily glimpses into the lives of strangers of New York City in the form of a website, and now a bestselling book. Brandon was in New Delhi (Connaught Place) during the second week of September, where he managed to gather a large crowd of youngsters.

Rhythm for a reason
The journey from being a freestyle rapper to a VJ to a wedding rapper, calls for a lot of connecting dots.
"You want the true story or you want the fake and made-up story?" quips MC Sid-The Wedding Rapper, as Siddharth Sood likes to put it, on whether political correctness is likely to score him any brownie points.
Truth, by all means, especially in times when truth is all elusive. "I used to attend tuitions with these two girls. I had a crush on one of them but took my chances with both. Once in the car, I tried to impress them by singing Eminam's song and I forgot the lyrics. So then and there, I started making up my own lyrics," he takes a trip down his teenage days when Eminem had just got big in India. The affair with Rhythm and Poetry (acronym for rap) got him not just the girl he had a crush on but a world full of opportunities. "So, what I do is freestyle rapping, which involves making lyrics on the spot, which is also very difficult to do and nobody in India does it," shares the Chandigarh born and Delhi brought- up guy, born to an IITian dad. Err… must be tough explaining the nature of the job when Honey Singh hadn't yet broken into the scene. "You have no idea," he shares on some of the obvious initial reactions. "I couldn't even explain the nature of my talent to my father because he knew I could not sing also." An MBA was a must, even though his interest lay elsewhere. "While completing my studies also I did a lot of events, including rapping with DJ Aqeel at Enigma. It was during one of those events that somebody approached me to be an MC at a big fat Sindhi wedding. There's been no looking back since then and fitted in between is a stint with Channel V as a VJ on the show VJ Freshers. "I have also opened shows for artistes like Mobb Deep and Akon. I recently completed a 20 city all-India tour promoted by Radio Mirchi." In priority list
So far, rap might essentially be a club genre but only so far. "Once I started doing weddings, things changed. Though of course, initially people thought I was like Russell Peters who sang. Now a- days weddings have several youngster's parties/cocktail nights or bachelor's parties where rap music fits beautifully. Moreover, I use Punjabi break beats in my compositions which helps relate to the select gathering." As much as catering, décor and trousseau, entertainment budgets have sky rocketed for weddings. "In one of them all the guests were flown in on a private jet. While in Chandigarh, I have hosted a wedding of a jeweller and a lawyer," he shares his observations on some of the big ticket weddings. "I'll be in Chandigarh in March, for the wedding of a daughter of this real estate lawyer. "The girl had a roka recently and they asked me to keep dates for March free." But before that, it's off to, "Nepal, Goa and then Kolkata."

You got it baby!
The nursery or baby room of your home can be decked up in various hues Renu Soni Current design trends influence every part of the home and the nursery or baby room is no exception. With a shift towards modern, nurseries are now as stylish as the rest of the home. Parents are steering toward sophisticated rooms a baby can enjoy well into his school years. Gone are the days of matchy matchy nurseries where a clear theme ruled and everything fitted like a coordinated puzzle. A revolution of new patterns, colours and designs are leading the way for top modern nursery styles. Eclectic mix
Stripes, prints and timeless patterns can all seamlessly blend for a rich, lived-in feel that reflects the personality of the family and the baby. Many designers these days feel that it's more natural to mix and match rather than make sure everything is a perfect fit. Unexpected details can add child-friendly flair. For example, ombre drawers, pendant lighting, a patterned rug and a table with a neon base can all be points of interest. Favourite era
Are you in love with a certain period? You can always include iconic pieces from your favourite era in your stylish nursery. One era gaining huge popularity is the Edwardian style, which features everything from tufting, gold frames, ornate patterns to a crystal chandelier. Contemporary look
Don't hesitate to layer white on white and then add bursts of colour on pillows, small furniture and mobiles. Colour code
When it comes to colour, navy and gray are the new neutrals, regardless of gender. Both colours instantly give the room an air of sophistication. Accent colours such as hot pink, yellow and aqua can add touches of girly and whimsical or masculine and bold. Purple hue
Some moms aren't pink ladies, and that's okay. Many parents are choosing soft shades of purple and lavenders and rightly so, since Radiant Orchid is the colour of the year. Cover well
Canopies over the crib are back by popular demand. Often the centerpiece of the room, canopies give a tailored, ethereal and classy feel. High above
Identify your ceiling! Walls have often taken centrestage when it comes to interiors. But with baby spending a great time gazing upwards, doesn't it make sense to make the ceiling a feature? Patterns and striped wallpaper work well. Graphic prints
Don't be afraid to layer
different patterns in complementary colours; it totally works. Being global
A well-travelled parent often wants their baby's first room to reflect their adventures, for example Marrakesh temporary wallpaper in a bright hue of turquoise, setting the trend for using vibrant and bold patterns in a baby room. To create a global vibe in this pretty space, you can use map-print wallpaper.

In service of music
It's time to hail the advent of a brand new era that defines the prevailing trends of Punjabi music industry. With the launch of a new music company, K3 Arts, which released its debut song in a brand new voice of Sumesh Kapila, we stand witness to the evolution of Punjabi music.
Not too long ago, Punjabi music echoed rustic charm through traditional songs of Surinder Kaur and Parkash Kaur, something which was also reflected in renditions of Gurdas Maan, Malkit Singh, Jaspinder Narula and many more artists. Now, comes the era of guns, cars and land. It's a time where Punjabi music is being promoted in a 'bollywoodised' packing. In conversation with Sumesh Kapila, we get to know how exactly. "This is my first song and we aim to promote Punjabi music with Bollywood tunes," says Sumesh at the official release of his first song titled Ohda Naa (Her Name). A romantic number, the song Ohda Naa, is predominantly looped around a chorus and a couple of paragraphs, the contents of which are romantically emotional, where a man explains to his friends why he cannot reveal to them the name of his beloved. While the vocals of the song are surprisingly refreshing, its music is more contemporary and reminds one of the Bollywood pop during the late 90s. After being trained in semi-classical music by his guru Sunil, Sumesh decided to take up music professionally. "I did my MBA in international marketing and after completing the degree, took to music because I was always fond of it. Also, I won the National Integration Singing Competition organised by the Government of India at Varanasi," says Sumesh while listing his accomplishments. Meanwhile, Gurpreet Kang, who is an Indian based out of France and the man behind K3 Arts, shares his concerns as the owner of a music company. "I have often been hearing that the music companies mistreat the singers in this region. I am running this company on two fundamental values — honesty and integrity. We aim to offer a good platform to the local artists without taking even a single penny from them," he shares. Kang also voices his major worry about the Punjabi music industry, which is dominated by male singers. "When I started up with this company, I received several applications but only from men. I am looking for a female vocalist; not that this region is deprived of talent, but I wonder why women aren't taking to music professionally here," he leaves us with a heavy
thought. amarjot@tribunemail.com

Beat this!
It doesn't take a genius to figure out that the Chandigarh club scene is invariably ruled by Bollywood music. But, in our partially inebriated state of mind, how many of us realise what version of our beloved Bollywood music is being blasted on high-octane speakers?
Lending us some perspective, and some relatable remixes, is Mumbai's DJ Tejas, in city to play at KC Hotel, Panchkula, on Sunday. His story is not one of rebellion, maybe that's why he's content with whatever came his way. "I was a teenager when my elder brother pushed me to learn the synthesizer (keyboard). That was my initiation into music. Then on, I started going to random parties and DJs, requesting them to let me play a set; that's how I learnt on the go. After a couple of years of that, I took a break for one-and-a-half years and just produced music, which I then kept uploading online, whatever limited mediums we had back then," says the 28-year-old, who has been DJing for the past decade. Tejas, as it turns out, has a huge fan following amongst Indians settled abroad too. "Since I'm known for my Bollywood remixes, anywhere I'd perform — Malaysia, Dubai, Singapore, Mauritius, Europe — desis would ask me to play a desi set. But, we had firangs also in the audience. So, the first three years of playing live internationally were quite tricky. Then, I learnt to strike the right balance by fusing electronic with Bollywood beats. And, it's been working wonders ever since!" While Tejas had pulled off some official remixes with RDB and Bombay Rockers a couple of years ago, his need to keep experimenting with Bollywood music hasn't dampened. "I try to mix Bollywood with Hip Hop or Bollywood with electronica. Next up, I'm planning to come up with some original stuff in collaboration with some Bollywood musicians," he
concludes. somya@tribunemail.com

She made it!
She's better known for her singing. But Monali Thakur of Sawaar loon fame, who has shown her acting talent with a hard-hitting performance as a child prostitute in Nagesh Kukunoor's Lakshmi, is presently ecstatic about winning the best actress award at the recently concluded Washington DC South Asian Film Festival.
The enthused Monali exclaimed: "What can I say? It was a bolt from the blue. I thought the movie was forgotten, though the pain and suffering I went through in portraying the prostitute will remain with me forever. Now this award has strengthened my faith in my decision to pursue a double career as a singer and an actress." She has her plan set. "Yes, I am going to continue as both an actor and a singer. When I did Lakshmi, the buzz in the singing world was that I was giving up singing for acting. In fact, Amit Trivedi asked about my plans. That shook me up. But now I feel I've the confidence to overcome people's doubts and go ahead with both careers," she added. Monali says she isn't happy with the quality of songs on offer. "I'm in no hurry as a singer or an actor. I won't accept everything that comes my way. The songs I sing have to have something to offer me. The same goes for the roles I accept." Meanwhile, Monali has already completed a second acting assignment. "It's a comedy called Mango directed by Abbas Tyrewala. I've a completely different role from what I did in Lakshmi. I play a feisty girl who cons three men played by Rannvijay, his brother Harman (who makes his acting debut) and Chandan Roy Sanyal into believing that she loves each one of them. After the dark gut-wrenching role in Lakshmi, I enjoyed this naughty comedy." She is looking at other acting assignments too. "I want to be known as a good singer who can act," Monali says ambitiously.

Hunting for true talent
With just a week left for its Grand Finale, Zee TV's Cinestars Ki Khoj will soon announce its winners who will go on to make their debuts in a film creatively supervised by none other than the maestro Mahesh Bhatt .
Having had their acting talent honed over the last two months by some of the finest experts from Bollywood, these budding actors are all set to take the entertainment scene by storm. What's more, for the latest episode of the acting reality show, this talented bunch even made their television debut on some of Zee TV's popular primetime soaps! Featuring in some of your favorite shows like Jodha Akbar, Qubool Hai, Sapne Suhane Ladakpan Ke, Kumkum Bhagya, Pavitra Rishta, Doli Armaanon Ki, Jamai Raja and Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya, the contestants were given a chance to play cameo roles with the lead protagonists of the show. Getting into the skin of some interesting, well-etched characters on each of these shows, the Top 8 contestants played these cameos with aplomb. Meenu Panchal played the role of a Maharashtrian bai in Kumkum Bhagya. Being a Haryanvi girl, the ease with which Meenu caught on to the Marathi accent was commendable. Playing a mawali, Bhawna Dhoundiyal stepped into the shoes of a firebrand girl who fights for everybody's rights in the show Pavitra Rishta. A tough girl even otherwise, Bhawna was seen carrying the mawali attitude with ease. While there were others who played straight-faced characters, Sayed Mamoon's character in the show Doli Armaanon Ki caught on with everybody as it was truly comical. Playing the character of a man who is possessed, Sayeed's dialogues were funny and called for some hilarious facial contortions and body language on his part. Okasana was seen in a fun street sequence playing a foreigner in Sapne Suhane Ladakpan Ke while Akshay Nalawade played the role of a yodha in Zee TV's historical Jodha Akbar. Saurabh Bharadwaj played a boy-next-door in Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya and Vikram Chatterjee played a corrupt police inspector in Jamai Raja. Much appreciated by the creative teams of the shows they had performed cameos on, these Top 8 contestants will be seen in an episode in each of the shows. With the show nearing its finale, we hope that the audiences shower them with votes and we hope the best one wins. Do not miss Cera India's Best Cinestras Ki Khoj powered by Glam Up, every Saturday and Sunday from 9 to 10 pm, only on Zee TV.

Look at the Super Nani
The first look of Indra Kumar's upcoming film Super Nani is out. The film marks the comeback of Rekha after a gap of more than seven years.
Rekha has wonderfully re-created none other than the iconic Mother India image made famous by Nargis Dutt way back in 1957.
The only difference is that she is holding a mop instead of the iconic plough. Needless to say, Rekha looks as effervescent as she has always been and she will be one of the bigger attractions of the film. Sharman Joshi, Shweta Kumar, Randhir Kapoor and Anupam Kher star in the movie along with Rekha. Super Nani is slated to hit theatres this Diwali, clashing with the Shah Rukh Khan-Deepika Padukone-starrer Happy New Year.

A foodie’s confession
Parineeti Chopra is a passionate foodie, so she loved shooting for Daawat-E-Ishq. She talks about the movie and more. Celebration of love and food
Totally! In fact all three of us - Anupam Kher sir, Aditya Roy Kapoor and I, love food. I'd say Daawat-e-Ishq is a celebration of love and food. On Aditya Roy Kapoor
He's a good actor. After working with him in this film, I've realised that only Aditya can compete with me when it comes to eating (laughs). Both of us love food and we would devour dishes in minutes. In Dawat-e-Ishq, I got to eat so much! I really think this film was tailor made for me. I'm a very bad cook. I love to eat but hate cooking. Second film with Habib Faisal
I have high regard for Habib sir. He gave me Ishaqzaade, which was a big landmark in my career. I think we have begun to understand each other. I'm proud to be working with Habib sir again. Food makes me smile
Delicious food makes me happy. I love food passionately. I like watching food shows and always want to know more about different cuisines. Then comes music. I sing to make myself happy
as well. Best compliment I've received
It was by late Yash Chopra. After watching Ladies v/s Ricky Bahl, he called me at 7 in the morning and said I want to say thank you for doing my film. It was such a huge thing for me that Yashji had called to thank me. I should've called him and been thankful to him for giving me the film. I'll never forget that moment.
