A dressing down
So, everyone in Bollywood right now is screaming in support of the actress Deepika Padukone who has lambasted a leading newspaper for carrying the pictures of her cleavage. The picture is dragged out from some success party of Chennai Express. If the industry is shouting 'wrong wrong', rebuking the media for having double standards, asking not to talk about women empowerment when they can't respect a woman, we wonder, should a woman be cautious of how she is dressed, is she vulnerable to prying eyes, to the cameras that can zoom-in on them at leisure? Does Deepika's incident become a lesson for an ordinary woman who likes to let her hair down at a party?
A thin line
Who doesn't like looking sexy and gorgeous for a party or private function, but does that mean women should always be wary of people around her, of the sound of every click of a camera? Anuj Sachdev, an actor, sees it as a breach of privacy. "Celebrities always dress up to look sexy, and I bet this is what Deepika must have done. Now, how a woman dresses up is her call, if she is comfortable in a dress she is wearing, why should others have a problem with it?" adds the actor who attends page 3 parties off and on. "Women have the right to have fun like men do.
Why should they be conscious of strangers around all the time?" Sukrit Dhanoa, a Punjabi actress backs her stance with an incident that shook her completely, "A friend sent me a picture of mine from a party I attended. I was wearing a shirt and denim shorts to the party and I usually keep the top three buttons open, but the picture made it look like I was exposing my breasts." Sukrit was shocked and she actually blasted off the man who had thrown the party. She doesn't comply with the fact that Deepika's incident is a lesson; however she also feels, "Women should be conscious when they are in public. I am not saying she should wrap herself in a shawl; but she should be aware." Tweets from Bollywood celebrities praising Deepika for her reacting are spreading like wildfire getting an equally strong response from the common man out there.
Me & my right
In a country that doesn't finds mannequins wearing lingerie inappropriate, a photo and that too of a leading celebrity like Deepika's cleavage will definitely heat up matters. Actress Surveen Chawla, who did some steamy scenes in Hate Story 2, finds it totally disgusting and frustrating for an actress. She supports Deepika's stance 'give them a befitting reply' and she is also of the view that, "as a woman she cannot always be thinking about who is looking at her and how. When a celebrity is under the public gaze many people stare, and we have no control over them. Now, if you want to look at a celebrity or for that matter any woman dressed up in a certain way, the way you want, what can be done about it?" Women celebrities wear sexy and revealing clothes, As Mahesh Bhatt says, "If a woman is beautiful she has all the right to show off that beauty, however she wants.” jasmine@tribunemail.com

Bollywood meharbaan!
Those, who believe in experimenting with creativity, truly explore their talent as an artiste. For what else could possibly validate the evolution of Indian music industry, which witnessed several trends, courtesy, the musicians of various eras, ranging from the golden period of classic playback from 50s to 80s to the album culture in the 90s and the existing era of the digital download.
In conversation with the contemporary Bollywood playback singer, Shilpa Rao, we stand acquainted with her vagabond soul that opens to all avenues that allow her to explore her potential as a musician and an open mind with which she embraces those opportunities. Having established herself as a playback singer in Bollywood seven years ago, Shilpa has placed herself in the league of experimental crop of musicians. while extending her artistic calibre to a series of platforms that promote music, including MTV Coke Studio and The Dewarists. "I was always influenced by music because my father was a music enthusiast and he had also learnt music. So even as a child, I used to listen to artists like Prabha Atre, Ustad Amir Khan and Mehdi Hassan," she says. In the capacity of a musician, she underlines the importance of being open to all sorts of music genres and shares with us her delight over the changes that have marked the evolution of Bollywood music. "I think Bollywood is now more open to experimentation and the songs are not too script bound. Also, it is experimenting with different kinds of voices which are not as conventional." While taking the course of the conversation on a more individual level, Shilpa avers that initially Bollywood music composers were quite nonplussed about her voice, which as per them was rather unconventional. However, later, they were more accepting of her. "I would often get to hear from composers that my voice confused them. But later, they worked their way around it," she says. Shilpa has sung over 56 Bollywood songs and has worked with some of the most eminent music composers, including AR Rahman, Vishal-Shekhar, Amit Trivedi, Raghu Dixit and Salim-Sulaiman. As a contemporary Bollywood musician, Shilpa Rao, instead of sticking to only
to Bollywood playback singing, explored different avenues that were experimental, yet influential. Her association with Indie musician Karsh Kale in the Coke Studio rendition of the song Hallelujah, and with bands like Agnee and Parikrama in The Dewarists impacts her musical career with a level of versatility that's almost a rarity. "I met Karsh at NH7 Weekender, Pune, where he asked me to collaborate with him.” Looking forward to the warm response that her latest track Meharbaan from the film Bang Bang has received, Shilpa shares that there is more in the kitty. "I am working on a music project from the up and coming film, The Tiger, directed by Danis Tanovi and another project with the band Adi and Sohail," she signs off. amarjot@tribunemail.com

We have to stand for Deepika: SRK
Lauding Deepika Padukone's gutsy response to a leading newspaper for putting up her tasteless picture, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan said he fully supports his Happy New Year co-star. The 48-year-old actor said not everyone has the courage to take a stand publicly. Speaking at the music launch of the Farah Khan-directed film, SRK said, "Let's not make that a conversational topic as many girls are present here in the event. Whatever Deepika tweeted I do support and all the cast of HNY will support that. We don't have the guts to do what she has done but we support her. "We all feel for her. We should not trivialise the issue," said the actor, adding these things will keep happening as they get photographed so much. Deepika, 28, who was also at the event, said, "I have said whatever I wanted to say. I am sure it will be taken care off from now on." Deepika's outburst came yesterday after she spotted her inappropriate image on the newspaper's social networking handle. Her tweet, "Yes! I am a Woman. I have breasts and a cleavage! You got a problem!!??" started trending online soon prompting reactions from several Bollywood celebrities like Karan Johar, Arjun Kapoor, Nimrat Kaur and Anushka Sharma. Actress Sonam Kapoor too called the incident "unfortunate". "We are constantly being objectified, be it kissing scenes or wearing bikinis. Everything becomes a point of publicity and news. I am sorry that it happened to her. It's obviously not right. I feel bad for her but I feel for the rest of us also," Sonam told reporters in Delhi, during the promotions of 'Khoobsurat'. "Deepika is extremely diplomatic so it must have been something stupid that she reacted like that," she added. Actress-politician Kirron Kher, who plays Sonam's on-screen mother in the film, said she can't comment without knowing the entire issue but did call Deepika a "sensible girl". — PTI |

Punjabi sentiment
Actor Arfi Lamba, who made his acting debut with Hollywood film Slumdog Millionaire, is all set to shoot for his next International film, which features American rapper Akon. In a quick chat, he talks films and his Punjabi roots.
What’s the feedback on Fugly? The feedback has been very encouraging. People have loved the film. I am overwhelmed by all the love I've received. It feels nice to get acknowledged for your work. The film has made good money at the box-office and I am really proud of it. How was it working with Akshay Kumar? What did you learn from him? I couldn't walk up to him on the first day of shoot. But on the second day, he greeted us and that's when I realised that he is down-to-earth. He's definitely an inspiration for me. Looking at him makes you realise that experience comes from hard work. There are no shortcuts if you want to learn. I look up to him. Have you signed any new films? Yes, I will soon start shooting for it. It is an international project which also features American rapper Akon. There is also a couple of projects in the pipeline. Once it works out, I will let you know. How do you stay happy? I am a Punjabi by heart and I've Sikh roots. In our culture, we say, 'Hum aadmi hai ek dum pe.' You can't always succeed. You win some and lose some. What's really important is the journey and the experience. Would you like to work in Punjabi films? Why not? I have grown up watching Punjabi films and I would definitely love to do one. What kind of roles you are looking for? I like to be a part of anything that touches my heart. I like to follow my heart. I might not be conventionally good looking but I know the craft and I love acting. My father is a farmer and I know my roots. I like challenges, so I always keep looking for something new.

Action in Austria

Mane matters
The significance of what's 'in the head' may not hold much relevance with what's 'on the head', but then whoever said looks do matter must definitely have been wise! Perhaps that also reasons hairstylist and beauty expert Abhay Girdhar's passion for beauty and trends, especially when it comes to hair. We catch up with him for a candid conversation at a seminar with the team of Indola. Having trained at some of the reputed hair institutes in the country and abroad, Abhay represented India at the Matrix World Tour Asia Pacific in Indonasia. He has also presented several talk shows on beauty, including a show named Saundarya, which was telecast on Doordarshan Punjabi and a talk show for channel DTV by the name of Style Mantra. Currently, he is running his beauty and wellness institute, Abhay's Piazza in Ludhiana. Cut to perfection
They say that when a woman decides to change the look of her hair, she decides to change her life and what better way to do that than by shedding some locks! Abhay guides us through a list of haircuts that suit various types of face-cuts. Here are some tips from Abhay that will go a long way in enhancing the shape of your face.
n
Long face: If you have a long face, it's imperative that you get some bangs or fringes, which will make the face look more oval.
n
Round face: One of those few times when the idea of round figures sounds appealing is when it is related to money, however, if you are not too satisfied with the roundness of your face, the best way to cut your hair is to keep the flicks till the length of your chin.
n
Square one: The best way to get rid of the extra angles on your face is to get the front flicks chopped till your lips or chin.
n
Frame it right: For those of you who wear glasses, the best way to frame your face is to get the front flicks chopped till the length of your nose. Henna decoded
The elder women of the house, who advocate the use of herbal hair colour, Henna, may have to read through this segment with a heavy heart. Not only does Abhay dismiss Henna as a dry agent for hair, but he also discards its use for hair, saying, "Henna is for hands, not for the hair." He adds, "Many women use henna to colour their hair but it's a dry agent, which should only be used for 15 to 20 minutes and that too if you have an oily scalp. Also, it does not colour your hair so effectively or add to the thickness. Instead, it keeps quoting your hair while accumulating on them, while you think its adding to the volume of your hair." For those of you who still haven't shown henna the way to your bin, here's another reason. Abhay recommends copper blondes and reds (even burgundy) as a global colour for those with wheatish completion. "Also, for those who have very dark skin tone, 5 to 6 range of base colour with merging caramel highlights will work like magic and enhance their complexion," he shares. About the hot colour trends this season, he shares that honey and walnut global hair colours are really in. "However, get the highlights done on the hair starting at your neck length and not from the top," he says. amarjot@tribunemail.com
Hair out
n
Use ammonia-free hair colour instead of henna.
n
In winter, use olive oil or almond oil on your hair.
n
In summer, apply amla oil or mustard oil on your hair.
n
In monsoon, regular hair spas are hugely recommended for frizzy dry hair.
n
Never get streaking done from the roots, instead get it done from middle to lower ends
of your hair.

Acting is what drives Purvi Mundada...
Jasmine Singh She doesn't go on a shopping rampage like her character Dolly in the tele serial Nisha Aur Uskey Cousins on Star Plus. Instead, she will weigh all the possibilities; think twice before taking the leap. Purvi Mundada is way different from her reel character, she nonetheless loves it because the buck for her stops at the word acting. "Even though Dolly is way different from me, I still love every bit of it. It is about acting, being an actor and I love every bit of it," says the pretty girl visiting Chandigarh for the promotion of the show. Acting is something through which she can do something new everyday. Purvi definitely wants to take the road to Bollywood, but as she is level-headed, she would rather work on it before! "The medium, whether it is films or television serial, is irrespective. I just love to act as I said. Also, making it to films is not easy. If you have some substantial work to show, or if you have worked in TV, you are given a sound hearing," adds Purvi. Her world right now is all about TV. "Let me tell you, it is not easy getting into TV as well. One gets those saas-bahu type roles easily, but when I heard about my role, I was up for it from the word go." Purvi plays Dolly in Nisha Aur Uskey Cousins, a girl who is in love with credit and debit cards. "My role is pretty challenging, she could be smiling at one minute and frowning the next minute. So, doing a role like this takes a lot," adds the actor who would love to play a Punjabi character. "I keep asking my Punjabi friends to teach me Punjabi because I would really want to play a Punjabi character." A die-hard Madhuri Dixit fan, Purvi can break into dance any moment when she hears music. Smiles Purvi, "Madhuri Dixit Nene is my ideal. I have grown up watching her dance and acts. I love acting…have I said it one time too many!" |

Heroic effort
Well, each one of us has our fair share of days when the fire of motivation that flames passion and potential seems to run out. If you are experiencing one of those days, here's an extra bit of spark in the form of music that will instantly light up your soul. Written by Danny O'Donoghue and Mark Sheehan of Irish pop rock band, The Script, the song Superheroes, the writer of which is James Barry, is a perfect blend of pop and rock. The lyrics that run along the theme of the song Fireworks, by Katy Perry, dwell on the idea of honouring those who suffer through hardships yet hold their heads up high. The song was originally recorded by the band for inclusion in their fourth studio album No Sound Without Silence and was first released as the band's twelfth single by Columbia Records.
Good vocals
This song sets a template for the contemporary pop-rock and the electrifying lyrics only add to the quality. Also, the song is very well-structured and I love the vocals. Indrani Gupta, private company employee Beautiful song
I totally love the song and think it's really interesting, especially the music that spells power and energy. Also, I am really fond of the lyrics. It's a beautiful song. Rahul Dhiman, artist High quality
I am totally in love with the song, mainly because of the quality of sound that they have come up with and the strong vocals. I think the best part about this song is the way it relates to people on an individual level. It gives me an instant boost and I love it. Vasudha Sharma, Free lance web designer (As told to Amarjot Kaur)

Journey of expressions
Anil K Kadian, who penned his first book titled Sabab 101 poetic expressions, underlines the significance of words while highlighting their importance in his life at the launch of his novel on Tuesday. "Sabab is all about the journey of expressions based on an individual's approach towards life depicting its fluctuating behaviour, his reactions at various stages and finding the right path by realising the truth of life. It has 101 poems with pictures. It's a limited edition book and will soon hit the commercial stands," he says.
While talking about the book, which took him six long years to complete, Anil shares that he only began writing poems to give a creative vent to his expressions. "Initially, I was only writing for myself and did not intend to publish it. However, two years ago when I decided to publish it, I replaced 40 per cent of its content," he says. Anil, who is also a scriptwriter for a Hindi film Uday—The Rise, the auditions of which are taking place at the Dream Academy, talks fondly of his association with the academy, which according to him has played an important role in promoting the book. "Uday—The Rise revolves around the life of a youngster whose character goes through a major transformation through struggle and pain," he says. Born in Beri village of Haryana and brought up in Chandigarh, a writer with a gifted expression, Anil Kadian considers the art of writing the closest thing to his heart. After graduating from Panjab University, he completed post-graduation from New Zealand in Business Studies. His circumstances directed him towards writing in 2004 and nine years later, his words have become his biggest power. "I have also written several educational scripts, including the one on Danny Singh, and a dialogue between a Spanish orange and Indian potato," he shares. Anil's work is heavily influenced by his quest to find a remedy to all his troubles. He has also used his talent for creating vibrant characters while writing some very engaging educational scripts meant for the youth and children. Anil believes that Uday movie would be a reflection of his soul as he is going to incorporate references and poetic expressions from his book, as also related ideologies for the lyrics and song composition.

The year ahead
If your birthday is September 17...
As a Virgo, the 17th day of September suggests that you are very lucky financially. Although you are probably very honest and ethical, this birthday enables you to be shrewd and successful in the world of business. Sensitivity in your nature, often repressed below the surface of awareness, makes it hard for you to give or receive affection. You create a distinct first impression on others and your likeability increases. People thoroughly enjoy being around you, not because of what you do, but because of who you are. Furthering your personal ambitions and interests comes more easily during this cycle. At times, you will feel the sky is the limit. Guard against becoming too full of yourself or overly self-interested. Investment in assets should be avoided. Positive colours: Black, Chocolate. Select days: Sunday, Tuesday. Favourable numbers: 1, 4, 8. Gems recommended: Blue Sapphire, Diamond. Charity on birthday: Donate white clothes.
You share your birthday with Sanjay Kapoor (September 17, 1965, Mumbai), brother of actor Anil Kapoor and producer Boney Kapoor. He has starred in many Bollywood movies. Sanjay's stars do not promise much success until he opts for a career in direction.
