HC calls for joint meeting
Chandigarh, August 1 Taking up the case of traffic regulation and road safety, Justice Rajive Bhalla directed the convening of a joint meeting to sort out traffic issues. For the purpose, Justice Bhalla set a two-week deadline. The directions came after Justice Bhalla observed that traffic problem at Zirakpur could be sorted out through joint effort. Justice Bhalla made it clear that Punjab Principal Secretaries of housing and urban development and the Public Works Department, GMADA Chief Administrator, NHAI project manager and UT Administration officers were to hold a meeting. Earlier during the hearing, GMADA authorities told the court that traffic chaos at Zirakpur required a joint action. Justice Bhalla, on the previous date of hearing, had asked Punjab to consider a proposal that allowed Patiala-bound traffic to take the flyover, move towards Delhi and then take a detour to the Royal City. If approved, the “dedicated” road to Patiala would reduce traffic congestion on the existing Chandigarh-Patiala road. An officer of the Punjab PWD had also told the court that GMADA was already constructing a road. Once opened, the traffic would move towards Delhi and then move take a turn to Patiala after taking the flyover. Taking a note of the developments, Justice Bhalla had observed that though the flyover had reduced the miseries to a large extent, it was causing immense difficulty to persons travelling to and fro Patiala. Justice Bhalla also took note of the fact that the Zirakpur bus stand had become operational on June 22, but traffic plan had not been placed before the court. Justice Bhalla also called for the submission of a proposal for decongesting traffic at Baltana. |

Court serves notice on Gippy Grewal
Chandigarh, August 1 The actor has been asked to file a reply by September 9. A criminal complaint seeking registration of a case of fraud and forgery has been filed against Grewal earlier this week. The complaint has been admitted in the court. The complaint was filed by Sector 26-based Aman Advertisement through its director, Raman Aggarwal. The complaint, which was filed through advocate Arvind Thakur, alleged that in February this year, Gippy Grewal agreed to pay Rs 7 lakh to the firm for promoting the film “Jatt James Bond”. While Rs 2 lakh were given at that time, it was decided that the rest of the amount would be given by Garish, a resident of Barnala, who has also been made party in the complaint. When the complainant requested Gippy to pay the remaining Rs 5 lakh, he issued a cheque, which allegedly was dishonoured on May 24 and July 2. The manager of the advertisement firm today told the court that Gippy Grewal used to threaten him when he used to ask for the remaining amount. A voice recording in which Gippy allegedly threatens the manager and the text of a threatening SMS have been submitted in the court. |

Big Bazaar, 2 others told to pay
Rs 2,000
Chandigarh, August 1 The complainant had bought a pack of Golden Harvest Daily Groundnut, manufactured by Future Agrovet Limited, for Rs 52 from Big Bazaar. Although the “best before” date mentioned on the pack was still six months away at the time of purchase, the groundnuts started showing signs of spoilage, such as fungus, within three-and-half months, stated the complainant. When he took up the matter with the opposite parties, a representative of Big Bazaar reportedly approached him with an offer to provide him with another pack of freshly packed groundnut as part of the replacement policy. The complainant, however, sought an analysis report of samples of the groundnut bought by him along with that of preceding and succeeding batches of the product. On getting no reply, he filed a complaint with the consumer forum. “Even though the opposite parties had protested to the application by asserting that the product had already passed the expiry date, the application was allowed. and the packet was sent for analysis to the pubic analyst, Government Laboratory, Sector 11, to give its report about the fungus in the packet and whether the groundnut was fit for human consumption. It is evident the sample had been received in the laboratory after the expiry of its ‘best before’ date, but it was opined that the contents of the sample were mould affected, having foul smell and hence unsafe for human consumption,” stated the forum. Opposite parties, however, denied that the groundnuts sold to the complainant were unfit for human consumption. “We allow this complaint and direct the opposite parties to pay a consolidated compensation of Rs 2,000 to the complainant for having had to resort to legal recourse to prove his point,” the forum ruled. |
