Students get placements

Over 20 students were selected in a campus placement drive held at the Sri Sukhmani Institute of Engineering and Technology (SSIET) in collaboration with the HCL BSERV, here, yesterday.

Prof Avtar Singh, chairman, Sri Sukhmani Group of Institutions, and Kanwaljit Kaur, director, inaugurated the drive.Gurpreet Kaur, Director (Technical) of the SSIET, said over 150 students from the SSIET and other engineering colleges of the region participated in the drive.

3 accused identified

Chandigarh, July 6
A day after the firing incident in Sector 27, the UT police have identified three persons, who allegedly attacked a 49-year-old man and his son, and also fired two gun shots in the air last night.

The accused have been identified Karan Walia, Karan, alias Kanu and Monty Shah. The police have recovered two live cartridges from the backyard of the victim's residence. A car, used in the crime, has also been recovered by the police. Efforts are on to arrest the accused, the police said.

The accused, along with others, had attacked victims, Rajkumar (49), and his son Bhiwani (29), with batons and sharp-edged weapons.

The police claimed that the assailants had prior enmity with Shivcharan, elder son of Rajkumar, lodged in the Burail jail, in a murder case. The police said, Kanu had an altercation with Shivcharan. A case has been registered at the Sector 26 police station.

Woman’s kin, Cong activist booked for fraud

Mohali, July 6
The police have registered cheating case against local Congress activist Buta Singh and some other residents.

Victim Ratninder Kaur, a resident Phase 1, alleged that her family members, including her mother Pritam Kaur, sister Rupinder Kaur, brother Kiranbir Singh, one Baldev Singh, Sudarshan Kaur and Buta Singh had conspired to take her share from the ancestral land by forging her signature in favour of Kiranbir Singh.

She said they were four siblings and her brother Kiranbir Singh resides in Canada. “The matter came to light when my mother had refused to give my share last year. When I procured documents of the land I came to know about the forgery,” alleged Ratninder Kaur. — TNS

22-year-old woman commits suicide

Mohali, July 6
A 22-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself at her paying guest accommodation in Phase 5. The victim, Amni Chaudhary was working as an executive in IVY Hospital and was resident of Kangra, Himachal Pradesh. The police said she was under some depression. “Some of her friends went to her room but she refused to accompany them, saying that she was not well. Later, she took the extreme step,” said the police.

A suicide note was found in her diary in which she stated that nobody was responsible for her death.

“We are investigating to find the reason behind taking the extreme step,” said the police while adding that the parents of the victim have been informed.

Local trainees continued to perform well in the ongoing CLTA-AITA men’s and women’s Rs1 lakh tennis tournament, being held at CLTA courts, Sector 10, here today. Local CHART trainee Digvijay Pratap moved into final qualifying round after defeating Mohit Bhardwaj at 8-3, he will face Sandeep Chaudhary, who defeated Gurjot Singh with an identical score of 8-3. In the women’s 2nd round match CLTA trainee, Pious Mudgil defeated Manpreet R. Kaur at 8-7(4) while Deepshikha overpowered Tanya Batra at 8-4.

Top seed Rimpledeep Kaur defeated Silky Sachdeva at 8-1 while another local player Aastha Malhotra moved further with defeating Dhara Bharat Thako at 8-1. Around 80 qualifying matches were played today at CLTA.

Amit Yadav wins 5-km race

Chandigarh, July 6
The 4th Chandigarh Marathon, in collaboration with Chandigarh tourism and CII Chandigarh, was organised today morning. Three types of fun races were organised in the marathon, flagged off by Anil Kumar, Home Secretary-cum-Secretary Tourism, Chandigarh.

In the 5 kms open Amit Kumar Yadav won the first prize in the men’s category while in 5 kms women category Sunita Malik won the first prize. In 5 kms Men senior’s category, Surinder Singh won the first prize whereas in 5 kms women senior Usha Yadav claimed the top prize. In 10 kmsx2 men’s category, team of Deepak Singh and Aman Singh won the first prize while in 10 kmsx2 mixed happy feat runners event, Akash Mall and Priyanka Sharma won the first prize. In 5kmsx4 (Mixed), Decathlon team including Simranpreet Singh, Karamdeep Kaur, Kushagra Sharma and Sandeep Madan claimed the top spot while in 5 kmsx4 (Men), Tech Mahindra team including Naveen Kumar, Ajay Malik, Mayank Sharma and Neshit Sharma won the first prize.

The three types of fun races including 5 kmsX4 Corporate Relay, the largest corporate relay in the country where 4 member teams from one organisation run 5 kilometres each to complete the 20 kilometre run, the 10kmX2 Open Challenge and 5 kms Individual race were conducted by the organisers. Winners in all three formats – the Corporate Relay, the Open Challenge and the 5 kms Individual – received winner t-shirts, winner medals, trophies and certificates. The fastest woman and fastest man in the 10km and 5km distances won gift vouchers worth Rs10,000.

The top 10 teams in the Corporate Relay (5kmX4) from Chandigarh will qualify to compete at the national finals in Mumbai in March 2015. Winners of the national finals will win a trip to the Istanbul half-marathon in November 2015.

LD Kapoor memorial total tennis championship Jasmol, Neeraj bag titles

On the final-day of LD Kapoor Memorial Total Tennis Championship, Jasmol Arora and Neeraj Yashpaul claimed title in their receptive categories, held at tennis courts of YMCA, Sector 11.

In the well-settled tough final of boys’ (U-12) category Jasmol Arora outclassed Shrenik Bhalla. The one hour long rally ended with a score of 7-5 and 7-5 in favour of Jasmol. Both the players played neck and neck till 5-5 in both sets however Jasmol held his nerve to clinch the two final games in both sets and managed to lift the title.

In the boys’ (U-14) category finals, Neeraj Yashpaul managed to concede only 6 games against his opponent Sahaj Punj and lifted the title. Neeraj won the first set with ease by conceding only 2 games. In the 2nd set Sahaj Punj struggled hard and provided tough resistance however Neeraj sustained the pressure and defeated hi rival at 6-4. Neeraj defeated Sahaj at 6-2 and 6-4.

In the girls’ (U-14) category, Khushbeen Kaur defeated Dikshita Rana without toiling hard at 6-1 and 6-3.

Sahib helps Ambala beat Chandigarh

Riding high on Sahib Singh’s bowling spell and a fine contribution from bat by opener Raman, Ambala Cricket Association defeated Chandigarh Cricket Association (affiliated to Punjab Cricket Association) by 52 runs, during a match of Haryana’s inter-district tournament for boys (U-25), played here.

At cricket grounds of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 19, after electing to bat first, the visitors batted well and posted 189 runs before getting all out in 35.2 overs.

Opener Raman along with Parth started off well. Raman scored 51 runs off 45 balls while his counterpart Parth contributed 51 off 65 balls to support team’s total. Rituraj also hogged the limelight scoring 25 off 31 balls.

For Chandigarh’s bowling line up, Paras performed well and claimed a haul of 5 for 50 while Karan claimed 2 for 23.

Chasing the total, the Chandigarh batting line-up shattered in front of a well bowled spell by Sahib Singh. He bowled a tightly and claimed six wickets for 23 runs. He was equally supported by Parth, who claimed 2 for 18. While Chandigarh batsmen folded their innings on 137 runs in 32 overs with Gourav (41 off 36 balls) and Sandeep (11 off 26 balls) scoring a major share.

City golfers win tourney

Chandigarh, July 6
Local golfer Angad Cheema and his team won the Pro-Am event of the J&K Bank PGTI Pahalgam Masters, at the Lidder Valley Golf Course, Pahalgam, (Srinagar) on Sunday.

The Pro-Am was played in the team scramble format where the team’s best ball was chosen on every shot including the putting green. After the best ball was chosen all other players were to place their ball within one Score Card Length before continuing play. Each team consisted of one professional and three amateurs.

PGTI member Angad Cheema led his team to victory with a score of 53.7.

Cheema’s team included amateurs Abrar Khwaja, Parvez Fazli and Parvez Bakshi.

PGTI member Jyoti Randhawa’s team finished second with a score of 54.5. Randhawa’s team comprised of amateurs SM Sahai, Riyaz Fazli and Rajiv Bal.

Abrar Khwaja won the prize for the closest shot to the pin on hole no. 3, landed within two feet and five inches of the pin while OP Singh claimed prize for the longest drive on hole no. 14 landed at a distance of 280 yards.
