A good catch!
Before they ask him anything--his latest song or where he would be performing next, or just about anything else—he is inevitably asked, "You have eyes like Hrithik Roshan. Are you wearing lenses?" And each time singer-actor Hardy Sandhu would poke a finger to his eyes to show them that they are for real. As real as his thoughtful songs are, as real has his acting debut!
The mushy-looking handsome singer, who by the way is an ex-Ranji Trophy player, makes his acting debut with the Punjabi film Yaaran Da Katchup that releases on July 18. The trailer of the film is already out and each day brings Hardy close to another reality- what will happen? Currently working on his two up-coming singles, Hardy pulls out moments to 'katchup' with his experiences of shooting, first shot, singing, dancing, romancing (on screen) and loaded fun…. So far so good It has been a joyride shooting for the film. One, I had a chance to meet so many new people and two I discovered another side to myself which is comfortable with acting. We act in all our songs but in the track Soch, I had a chance to explore this side better. It gave me confidence and when the makers of the film narrated me the role, I took it up! Dil, dosti etc The film is based on an interesting story of three friends, how they catch up after years and the incidents that follow. I remember, while shooting the scenes where the rest of two friends catch up, I would often miss my college friends. At the end of the shoot, I would call them and make extensive plans of catching up soon. Friends are an important part of my life. They are my best critics, my best fans. Guri Dhaliwal, singer Ammy Virk and the team of Virsa Arts are some of the people whom I can lay my bets on. First cut My first take for the film was shot in Chandigarh where I am with two other actors. I was slightly nervous. But after a while, I got into the groove. I told myself that I had done this before in my videos, only this time the canvas was big. My entire crew of Yaaran Da Katchup was pretty supportive. Films & more I am a singer first. Soon, after the release of my film; I would start shooting for my next two videos. The same team of Soch will be shooting these songs as well. I am excited about the two tracks. I want to concentrate on singing. I have read a couple of scripts, but I want to pick and choose the subject. Well, Punjabi cinema is going through its up phase but we still have lot of good directors and subjects that need to be explored. I would want to be a part of this kind of cinema. Must watch Punjab 1984 is the recent film that I watched, and I must say, I haven't seen such a sensitively done film in a long time. Everyone in the team has done a great job. Anurag Singh is an amazing director. I would love to work with him. Punjabi cinema is full of good scripts, we only need to experiment and break the usual barriers. I am open to any kind of cinema that gives me a chance to explore myself as an actor as well. It’s news I have been offered a Hindi film. Couple of things need to be settled before I can share the big news on it.

So far so great
His track Saturday Saturday has become the obvious choice of every party. Badshah is definitely rising as the new singing sensation as his track Saturday Saturday finds a place in YRFs next Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya. This rapper singer is all excited and flooded with appreciation. For this Delhi-born singer life can be as big as one makes of it. "I live life like a Badshah, so I am Badshah," he crackles as he shares his 'real' name Aditya Singh.
From the scratch I moved to Chandigarh from Delhi when I was 17. It is here that I did my debut track, Jawani, with Honey Singh in 2011 and ever since the ball has been rolling. Singer, always I can't think of being anything other than what I am. Whatever I would have been, it would definitely have to do something with music. Home turf to Bollywood I feel honoured that my track Saturday Saturday is being appreciated in up-coming Hindi film Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya. Karan Johar loved the track and Sony music managed everything smoothly. I also want to send a special thanks to my brother Indeep Bakshi. Yours sincerely I would want to give the entire credit of my success to my supporters and fans. I could manage to reach this far because of their love. Jamming 'in' I think all singers have some special quality or the other. Their isn't anyone in particular I want to collaborate with. I like myself Patience and passion are the two attributes that I like about myself. Life's changed (Laughs). There is no such life-changing moment that I can think of. Style file T-shirt, basketball shorts and an amazing pair of sneakers, this would define my style statement. Up next I am doing loads of work at present; I am also working on my debut album, which is titled One.

Saffron touch
If you missed your date with Kashmir this summer, do not worry. JW Marriott has brought Kashmiri delights especially for you. Experienced Chef Rayees has flown down from the Valley along with his team and masalas in tow to give you an authentic Wazwan experience.
Ideally, food should not only please your palate but also entice your others senses and delicacies prepared by the Marriott chefs do precisely that! Even before you take your first morsel, the aroma hits you pleasantly. The extensive menu has it all — right from rista, goshtaba, roganjosh, haaq saag, dal yakhani and yes, kahwa. Right from the starters, you know you are in for some rich flavours — Murg kanti has a hint of Kashmiri mirch and Lal paneer tikka replicates that. Nadroo churma deep fried in desi ghee retains the ghee's flavour; in fact most of the dishes use deep fried ingredients, except brinjal, to retain their succulence. In the main course, Mutton Roganjosh gets a heads up in non vegetarians, muj gard — radish and fish find favours too. Although Kashmiri food is non vegetarian primarily, Chef Rayees has kept plenty of options for vegetarians too. Tamatar chaman is a juicy paneer dish. Haaq saag is prepared in Kashmiri masalas, chock wangan is sour brinjal while dal yakhani is prepared in yogurt gravy. The only downside is that Kashmiri food is high in salt content that might not find much favour here although the chefs are ready to tone it down. What takes the cake is Kashmiri phirnee. Do have a cup of kahwa, a delightful finish to a rich meal. There are three varieties - kahwa, dudh (milk) kahwa and noon (salt) kahwa. The 26 dishes are available as preset menu and al a carte. For dinner, which begins from 7 pm onwards, get ready to dish out Rs 1,100 (plus taxes) for vegetarian meal and Rs 1,400 (plus taxes) for non-vegetarian. (On till July 13) mona@tribunemail.com

One season,many moods
There is inspiration in every bit of the first shower. Nature's muse that is a call to the creative-the poet with his words, the painter with his canvas and the musician with his notes. The monsoon chapter takes you to larger than life clouds, the beautiful browns reflected in the earth and vast lands refreshed by the annual spell of rain. How else would you explain the season? Throw in a paper boat made during carefree playful days. How else?
Visual art has always stepped in to fill the blanks with colours and canvas. Right from the classic John Moyers with his famous oil on canvas titled Monsoon Season to contemporary Indian artists. "One of the reasons why monsoon has always been a popular theme among the creative people is because it is an inspiring season…During the monsoon, I feel happy. When I feel happy, all I want to do is paint. Somewhere that also automatically reflects in my works," shares Ananta Mandal, Mumbai-based artist, who has done a series on the monsoon and apart from that doesn't forget to include a few works in every series. "When I shifted from Kolkata to Mumbai that is when I saw monsoon in all its glory. I tried to translate that onto canvas." In came the cars, people and the city life to bring home the spectacle of the coastal area. Water-borne creativity Childlike, romantic, lonesome…each time, the interpretation of the season varies. Ask a farmer and suddenly the significance is more than just a spell of shower. For Chandigarh-based artist Bheem Malhotra, it is fertility that assumes importance apart from other things. Like all souls creative, he is inspired by the cheerfulness of the season. "I feel happy during the monsoon and it is that ensures a blend of imagination and creativity in my works," he shares, having depicted the monsoon against the background of paddy fields. He adds, "I also feel the after effect of rain on people is beautiful. Things are washed, people are joyous." Precisely what led to his having painted monsoon on the Mall Road at Shimla. In the din of romanticism that is often associated with the rain, what is overshadowed is its integral connection to economy and agriculture. "I am a farmer's son, therefore monsoon has a close connection with me. I have depicted the old buildings in Pune after the rain," shares the Pune-based artist Somnath Bothe. Elixir of art Just as landscape remains an integral part of visual art, the monsoon theme is an inevitable part of the subject itself. Opines Baani Sekhon, art curator from the online Ocher Art, "Even though I don't do landscapes myself, I always make it a point to invest in monsoon works. They are a ready reckoner and quite popular.” Among the several cities and roads visited in the season, there are still a lot many left. Ananta Mandal shares, "I really want paintings of the monsoon against the Rajasthan background. We have always associated the state with dry lands and deserts. I want to see what the place feels like after it has rained there." We are sure, some take a moment to celebrate and feel the rain. Adds Somnath Bothe, "It is the positivity of life and energy that flows that matters the most to me. Life doesn't stop after the rains. Some of my works also touch upon that topic." For that matter, life doesn't stop even during the rains. It is only revived with what is often called the elixir of life. manpriya@tribunemail.com

Not so bad!
Soon Shaleen Bhanot will be seen on small screen in an intriguing role. A transporter who delivers packets no one else would. On Bindaas' show, Yeh Hai Aashiqui, this popular actor will be seen as a baddie who is set for a change of heart.
Here is Shaleen spilling beans on the show and life… How was your experience on Yeh Hai Aashiqui? I loved it! It was three days of hectic shoot. But I loved the story, crew and the whole experience. Tell us about your role. I play Rakshit. He is an introvert in love with his work, a transporter who delivers parcels and asks no question. He is a favourite of many for the work is guaranteed and secrecy is maintained. Then one day a strange parcel changes his life forever. Who is you co-star in the show? How was it working with her? Shamin Mannan plays opposite me. I had never met her before. It was great working with her. Though we shot 16-17 hours a day, we did manage to sail smoothly. How do think about Yeh Hai Aashiqui's format? I think it's a step between serials and a film. While shows run for years and years, films are two hour plus. It's like a mini film. In short formats, there have been horror and thrillers earlier but it's the first time that a love story is shown. It works pretty well. You have been in soaps, reality shows— what comes naturally to you? Mine is a very simple logic - do anything to entertain people. I have enjoyed soaps for the love you get from the audiences is overwhelming. And winning Nach Baliye 4 was just incredible. It's a memory we will cherish forever. How long have you been in Mumbai? Do you miss your hometown Jabalpur? It's been eight years since I am moved to Mumbai. While Jabalpur is where Shaleen Bhanot lives still in his family, friends; in Mumbai, I have made a brave new world all on my own. Earlier, I would go to Jabalpur every two or three months; I haven't been there for three years now. I am missing Jabalpur like anything but on my next visit I want to actually do something for my city and people, hopefully by the end of this year. You married your co-star Daljeet. How similar or different life is reel vs real together? I don't recall her as the girl who worked with me anymore. I played a dominating guy who quite ill-treated her on the show Kulvaddhu. I am none like that in real. She played this really timid, shy girl…well, I am not saying anything else (laughs). How has fatherhood changed you? It's an incredible feeling. I feel like a super man. Didn't actually think that I can give life, there is something sacred about it. Shaarav is seven months now and at home I and Daljeet have a competition--who does he resemble more. He sure has taken the best from both the parents, but I would like to believe he looks more like me. I feel over the moon. Do we see you moving to big screen? What is next for you? I would love to. Though what I love about small screen is the immediate feedback. You shoot, it's on air next day and you get the feedback. There is no lag like in movies. I am on with two more projects in something that I have not tried ever before. But I am not allowed to speak till the official announcement. You will know soon! Catch Shaleen in Yeh Hai Aashiqui on Bindass on Sunday at 7 pm. mona@tribunemail.com

Cutting edge
Satish Narula The monsoon will be weak, but any prediction of showers is welcome news for the gardeners. One thing more, it is not necessary that there is rain all the time and then only the garden will be happy. What matters more is the humidity level, which should go up. At the same time, the temperature should not be more or that becomes conducive for the build-up of disease spores. The time is not suitable for putting bulbs as at times in an effort to get early bloom, the gardeners or commercial growers put gladiolus bulbs in the soil. Due to high humidity and high temperature, there is almost complete damage due to pathogens. Once the disease sets in, it spreads in the whole bed. This is the best time to multiply plants. The most used and one of the best methods of multiplication is by way of cuttings. Cuttings should be made properly. Giving a slant cut at the base of the cuttings gives better success rate, as there is more surface area exposed to water uptake, which is better in this case. The cutting is made depending upon the kind of plant. In case of soft wood cuttings, the cuttings are made from the terminal growth of soft wood tissues. The cuttings in such cases are made about four inches long. Such cuttings are made in case of carnation, dahlia, chrysanthemum etc. In case of hard wood cuttings from plants like bougainvillea, rose and most of the shrubs like Rat-ki-Rani etc, the cuttings are made about 10 inches long. The way of making cuttings is the same as explained above. The normal myth about planting of cuttings is that gardeners, normally on advice of malis, add fertiliser to the soil. The cuttings have sufficient food stored in it till when it grows to form new leaves and become an independent plant. The sand or the soil media, in which the cuttings are planted, should be kept moist. Normally, out of curiosity, the gardeners pull the cuttings out after a few days to see whether roots have formed or not. This may damage the cuttings. In case where the growing medium used is pure sand, the medium is loose and the cuttings are pulled out easily; these should be replanted. The sign of cutting getting roots is appearance of new leaves that mature after a few days. When four or five healthy leaves have appeared, the cuttings could be extracted from the sand and planted in pots or soil. The pots should then be kept in shade and the soil be kept moist. NH10 can wait
Anushka Sharma's maiden production NH10 will be released next year because this year she already has two huge releases with PeeKay and Bombay Velvet. She won't get much time to promote it.
Now, Tabu turns a singer
Tabu will make her singing debut in Haider with a song called Roshe Valle. She sang it during shooting and Vishal Bhardwaj retained it in the
movie.
Kangana has sleepless nights
Kangana Ranaut, who is studying for a course in screen-play writing in New York, is burning the midnight oil as her semester is reaching its end. The 27-year-old actress, who is known for her commitment and dedication to whatever task is at hand, has been staying up most nights to study as her classes run all day long.
Shraddha goes bold
Take a look at Shraddha Kapoor's bold avatar a la Kendall Jenner for a shoot for a magazine. This is the same gown that Deepika Padukone wore to the Filmfare Awards. The paparazzi recently refused to take picture of Shraddha Kapoor at the success party of Ek Villain. When his co-star Riteish Deshmukh asked the reason, they said they have boycotted her for her behaviour. Apparently few days back during the promotion of the film, she avoided media. So, this time the media decided to avoid her. This left her teary-eyed. Sidharth Malhotra has been visiting theaters to gather first hand audience reactions for his film, Ek Villian. The film which released this weekend is doing extremely well at the box office. Sidharth has made a couple of outings where he has visited theaters. He is trying to gather non-biased reaction and liking the experience Ek Villian marks Sidharth in a very different avatar. Sidharth was very nervous before the release. It's the first time he did hard-core action and stunts. Previously, he played a student-turned-entrepreneur in Student of the Year and a lover boy-cum-businessman in Hasee Toh Phasee. Both roles were layered but light. Hence, he was apprehensive if he would be able to do justice to the action role and if the audience would accept him. However, the reaction has be unanimously positive and Sidharth has been elated. Sidharth says, "I have been visiting theaters to catch first hand audience reaction. It was wonderful and one of a kind experience! Bring on the love! " Amidst legal conflict with her former boyfriend Ness Wadia, actress Preity Zinta has started shooting for her cameo role in Saif Ali Khan's upcoming film Happy Ending. The two actors last shared screen in 2005 film Salaam Namaste. Deepika Padukone tries to do something new in every film that she does and her look in Finding Fanny shows that she is set to wow audiences again by playing a character that she has never played earlier. Deepika plays the character of Angie in Homi Adajania's quirky comedy titled Finding Fanny. The film narrates an absurdly entertaining story that throws together a bunch of oddballs on an unlikely mission. Finding Fanny releases on September 12. The film is produced by Maddock Films and is being presented by Fox Star Studios and Illuminati Films. Sonu Nigam sang Hangover last year in a recording session for the movie and he was not even paid for it. Now, Salman Khan has sung the song and Sonu came to know about it only now. Both Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt want to go to Greece for a holiday, albeit separately, next year. They maintain that they are only very good friends.
Simply wow!

A young take
She shot to fame with her role as Suguna in Balika Vadhu, but Vibha Anand doesn't like to sit on her laurels. She will now be seen in a youth-oriented show titled Kaisi Yeh Yaariyan. She talks about it and more. What is your new show Kaisi Yeh Yaariyan about? It's a youth-based show about the college life of a gang of girls. It stars on July 21. We haven't started shooting yet and will also shoot an outdoor schedule in Goa. I am very excited. What is your role? I play Navya Naveli, a girl from Bihar who comes and joins an institute to learn music. There is a gang of five girls in the show and how things move on from there. She's not bindaas or innocent, but confident. Did you know that Navya Naveli is Amitabh Bachchan's grand-daughter's name too? Yes. I am excited that I got the same name in this show. I am happy about having some connection with Mr Bachchan. I don't know why the makers kept the name, but it sounds nice. After Balika Vadhu, was it tough to bag good roles? It was little tough, but I was also happy that people judged me by my hardwork and talent. In television, we get typecast easily and I always wanted to do a youth-oriented show. I wanted to play my age and work with people of my age. I am grateful for this chance. What do you think of youth-centric shows? This is my first experience. And I have to say I enjoy watching such shows. In fact, my siblings too watch shows on Channel V and MTV. I am happy to be doing this show.
Katrina’s fan following
Katrina Kaif … are you reading this? Cast aside all your fan mail, show all the men who profess undying love for you the door … because if there's somebody who is way more crazy about you than any of your die-hard loyalists, then that would have to be the 40-year-old Robotics professor from Meerut, Vinay Sharma. The 'gentleman' presented an 'extra special' song with lyrics like Katrina Kaif jaane kisko milegi; Jisse Pategi uski Kismat Khulegi written, composed, sung and choreographed all by himself at the auditions of Cera India's Best Cine Stars Ki Khoj. Dedicating his act to the ravishing Katrina, he introduced himself as the 'Katrina Man'.
When Arjun met Karan!
Actor Arjun Bijlani, who is shooting for his debut film Direct Ho Gaya Ishq, was in for a surprise when he bumped into Karan Kundra at Gangaghat in Benaras. Both have been friends since more than a year. They even offered prayers together.
Arjun Bijlani confirms, "It was a coincidence that we bumped into each other. At the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, we both decided to go for rudraabhishek. Karan had a local friend in Benaras who got everything organised. It was such a spiritual experience. This was my first visit to Benaras. I felt blessed and lucky. The pandit gave us the photo frame of the top of the temple shikar too, which is made of pure gold. I thanked God for everything and prayed for peace. It was a serene environment. I want to go to Benaras again for sure. The visit has left me with mesmerising memories. Bumping into Karan Kundra was also such a coincidence. We went for lunch together the next day."
For the real touch
Neha Chauhan, model and actress who was last seen in Love Sex or Dhoka, makes her debut on small screen with the upcoming 'finite' series Yudh. The actress plays the role of a sex worker and has left no stone unturned to look real for the role.
She will be seen wearing clothes hired from Chor Bazaar; it seems Endemol Production and director Rhibu Dasgupta are really trying hard to get the look perfect and real with Aruna. Yudh, which marks Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan's television debut in the 'fiction' format, has been co-produced by Endemol and Saraswati Productions. The show has 20 hours of content to be presented as a daily programme. Yudh's storyline follows the different relationships that Yudhishthir, played by Bachchan, shares with various people in his life. While it is a family drama, there are realistic undertones in the storytelling.
On to another act
Having been Delhi's youngest RJ at the age of 14, ten years later Abhimanyu is all set to take the world of movies by storm with his latest audition at Zee TV's upcoming reality show — India's Best Cinestars Ki Khoj. Having won accolades at a very young age, Abhimanyu had always dreamt of becoming an actor. Given his amazing oratory skills, Abhimanyu left no chance to impress the judges Sonali Bendre and Victor as also the gorgeous 'Bollywood buddy' on the show — Parineeti Chopra.
The end is near
Buzz is that the serial Qubool Hai will end in August. After Karan Singh Grover left the show, the ratings showed a marked dip. Raqesh Vashisth replaced him and after the leap, Karanvir Bohra too tried to work his magic but the ratings haven't been as stable.
Brand bargain
Television star Drashti Dhami, known for winning hearts through her popular television show Madhubala and as the winner of reality dance show Jhalak Dikh La Ja Season 6, will be seen in Color's new campaign 'Color with Confidence'. Speaking on her association with the brand, Drashti says, "I am honored to join the Matrix family. Matrix is known for setting trends when it comes to hair. I am most excited to be part of creating and showcasing the latest cut & colour looks from the brand."

Nothing good detected
Bobby Jasoos Directed by newcomer Samar Shaikh and produced by Dia Mirza as well as Sahil Sangha, Bobby Jasoos is a Bollywood comedy-drama film that stars Vidya Balan as the eponymous protagonist and features Ali Fazal, Supriya Pathak, Rajendra Gupta and Tanvi Azmi in supporting roles. The film revolves around Bilkis (Bobby) Ahmed, a Hyderabadi woman, who aspires to become a detective, despite facing a series of obstacles. Vidya rocks The film is not that good, but it garners points only because of Vidya Balan, who is, like always, very convincing as Bobby, who wants to become a detective. I like the film, but it is not exceptionally good as I expected it to be. Vishu, employee at a private firm One-time watch I have always been very fond of Vidya Balan and her acting. I think she is one of the finest actresses in the industry and it is she who saves this film from hitting the rock bottom. I like the film, only because of Vidya! It's definitely a one-time watch. Komal Sharma, student Not gripping I did not like the film much, probably because the treatment of the story was not as good as it could have been, considering that it is about a woman who wants to become a detective and is striving hard for it, especially when the actress is Vidya Balan. Somehow, the film failed to grip. Rohit Joshi, Chandigarh-based musician Lekar Hum Deewana Dil Jointly produced by Saif Ali Khan, Dinesh Vijan and Sunil Lulla, under the banner of Eros International and Illuminati Films, Lekar Hum Deewana Dil is a romantic Bollywood drama film. The film stars Nikita Dutta, Armaan Jain, and Deeksha Seth. It is the debut directorial venture of Arif Ali, who was the assistant writer in the film Aahista Aahista, directed by his brother Imtiaz Ali. A still from Lekar Hum Deewana Dil
Boring affair It is a very boring film. It's not even a one-time watch. I did not like the acting, the storyline of the film or anything about it, except the music. Watching this film is a sheer waste of time and money. Henna Dogra, student Old formula I did not quite like the film much, probably because all it has to offer is the same old romance that we have been fed up with since we were born. There was not even a single new twist. The film works on the old formula of entertainment, which makes it boring and almost unbearable. Kshitij Gupta, student (As told to Amarjot Kaur)
