Former PU CoE, 3 others acquitted
Tribune News Service
Chandigarh, July 4 The court acquitted Dr Sodhi Ram, former PU Controller of Examinations, clerk Dhan Singh and two students Ashwini Gupta and Anurag Gupta, who were students of PU, of all the charges. Dr Sodhi Ram and the other three were arrested by the CBI on July 21, 1998, for their alleged involvement in question papers leak case of B.ScIII(Honours), Department of Mathematics, in May, 1998. The CBI registered an FIR on July 21, 1998, under the Prevention of Corruption Act. The CBI had produced the chargesheet in the case in the lower court on August 4, 2000. It was first reported on May 26, 1998, that a theory paper of Maths had been leaked. Taking cognisance, the then vice-chancellor M M Puri had ordered a commission of inquiry. On June 6 the same year, Puri wrote to the CBI, requesting the agency to probe the matter so as to “restore the honour of the university”. The CBI agreed and registered an FIR on July 21, 1998, under the Prevention of Corruption Act. On June 9, 2000, the investigating officer recorded the confession of one Dhan Singh, an accused in the case, who worked as a clerk with the university, who named Dr Sodhi Ram. Singh alleged that Ram had asked him to leak out two papers. Following the confession, Ram was arrested the same day. After remaining behind bars for seven months, he was released on January 17, 2001. The CBI had produced the challan in the case in the lower court on August 4, 2000. Ram clarified his stand before the PU Senate on August 26, 2000, following which the Senate refused to grant sanction to prosecute him. Dropping charges of corruption, the court had then framed charges of cheating and criminal conspiracy against Ram. As per the prosecution case, the answersheets were smuggled out and were attempted by the students, who were sitting outside the examination hall. It further transpired that petitioner Dhan Singh had started picking up question papers set up by the examiner in the year 1994 and after getting the same photocopied from the market, had sold the same to the students. He had picked up question papers of B.Sc (math) only on the ground that his clients were students of B.Sc. Honours (math). The other accused were selling papers to students of other subjects on payment basis. All the accused were acquitted after none of the charges could be proved in court. Maths Theory paper was leaked

Retailer of phone sets penalised
Chandigarh, July 4 Pawan Kumar purchased a new mobile phone (Spice Smart Flo Mi-351) from Gupta electronics (the opposite party) by paying Rs 3,200. After a few months, the mobile handset reported problems of frequent rebooting and interrupted browsing. As the complainant took the mobile for repair to the Vignesh Services Authorised Service Centre, he was shocked to know that the mobile phone had already been repaired and was sold on March 7, 2013 by the dealer, while the complainant had purchased the handset on August 24, 2013, stated the complaint. “When the matter was brought to the notice of the opposite party, it refused to entertain the complaint, the complainant alleged. In its reply, the opposite party admitted the sale of the mobile handset in question but stated that the answering a new sealed cover mobile phone was sold at a reasonable price to the complainant and the seal was opened in the presence of the complainant. A perusal of the file reveals that the handset in question was sold at Howrah, West Bengal, and later on repaired twice. Gupta electronics has not produced any document to prove that he is the authorised dealer of the manufacturing company (of which the complainant’s phone was). So the evidence shows that the opposite party is involved in the malpractice of sale of fake/duplicate handsets/items to innocent consumers. |
