A beautiful mind
A crown that defines the identity of beauty, placed daintily on the winner's head at a beauty pageant, becomes the insignia of perfection and dignity. However, for Bir Kaur Dhillon, who was crowned the Mrs India Globe 2013, in October last year, the crown is just another feather in her hat, and perhaps a very small extension of her otherwise very enterprising disposition.
She is a marathon runner and ran for four hours- and-a-half at the Run For water Marathon held at the British Columbia in May last year. Based in Vancouver, she also runs her own clothing line by the name of Kaur Couture and is the director of two social organisations, Women on Women Welfare (WOWW) and Global Girl Power, an organisation against female foeticide. In Chandigarh, to announce the launch of a beauty pageant titled Mrs India Beauty Queen 2014, Bir slips into the role of an organiser while she serves as a director at Mrs India Globe. The pageant is organised by WOWW and invites the participation of married women from across the country. "I have often wondered why women let themselves go after becoming a wife and then a mother. We are organising this pageant specifically for married women, who hold their identity as the epitome of dignity and celebrate their womanhood," says Bir. While her father, Bahadur Singh Chauhan has served the office as a chief coach of India (athletics) and has won the Asian gold medal twice, beauty pageant came to Bir for the fulfilment of her truly nationalist dream. "I have always wanted to hold the flag of India and represent my country and my dream came true at the Mrs India Globe beauty pageant, so when someone asks me why a beauty pageant, I question them right back, why not a beauty pageant!" she smiles. Bir's two basic aims for organising a beauty pageant in India remain women empowerment and the other is to promote and conserve the heritage buildings across Punjab. A mother of two, Bir extends rather gracefully the credit of her accomplishments to her husband who she says has been absolutely supportive and least conservative. "He is probably the most open-minded person I have come across and he supports me in all my endeavours," she signs

Exchange notes
One fine day, to pursue his dream of acting, he shifted his base to Mumbai. The decision came only after successfully completing his Masters in Business Administration. With a strong connection to the industry (he is Jimmy Shergill's nephew and we know uncles can be godfathers too, read Aamir Khan and Imran Khan), Karan Tiwana could have done that much earlier but education, he says, is vital.
"My qualification gives me confidence, it gives me a mind of my own and a clear perspective about things around," says the young actor, who finally managed to grab a role in the Punjabi film, Needhi Singh. Starting his career in Pollywood, he says, is the stepping stone to Bollywood and he has already bagged a project there as well. "I am doing Raj Shetty's directorial debut, Love Exchange and I got the role only after going through an audition, competing with a dozen other aspiring actors, he says making it clear that the role wasn't a result of Jimmy's recommendation to the filmmaker. Though Jimmy didn't directly put forth a word for him to any filmmaker, Karan says, he still is his biggest supporter. "I seek his advice before taking any big decision. To me, he is an inspiration, a motivator, definition of success and someone who has been able to sustain himself in Bollywood despite all the competition for all these years." His stint as an assistant director of the film, Rangeele, starring Jimmy Shergill and Neha Dhupia, was only to get the feel of the sets, to know the behind the camera scene of the film, "So that when I face the camera, I am more comfortable. It also gave me an idea about the hard work technicians, spot boys and crew of the film put in." Making his debut against Kulraj Randhawa, an already established actor, is quite a risk he is taking and he doesn't deny that. "But look at it positively; I am getting to learn a lot from her." He cites the example of Kahaani, one of his favourite films, which brought Nawauddin Siddiqui in the limelight, while Vidya Balan played the lead. Also, Karan is playing a negative character in the film, which is quite a contrast to the role he has got in his Bollywood debut. He considers himself lucky to have got a chance to play two such diverse characters. "With every role, I will improve as an actor." And, as is the case with most actors, he too started his acting journey on the stage at school level. "I am happy with where I have reached but there is still a long way to go." All the

From ouch to wow!
Laser therapy is an effective and painless way to get rid of the unwanted hair Dr Sukhdeep Kaur Summer is here. That means it's time to flaunt fabulous dresses and gorgeous, satin smooth, hairless skin. Who wants to miss out on a beach trip or visit to a rooftop pool because of leftover winter stubble? If you're just coming out of hibernation, now is a great time to consider your options when it comes to keeping the bikini line, underarms and legs smooth, bump-free and swimsuit-ready! Wax eloquent
We all know that keeping our bodies hairless in all the right places isn't always smooth sailing! So, when we go to parlours for waxing don't forget it has various side effects like redness and inflammation, pimples, ingrown hair, bumps, bruising, burned and change in skin colour. Ray of hope
While waxing offers temporary hair removal, laser hair removal offers a permanent, painless and safest way to get rid of unwanted facial and body hair. The most advanced laser for hair removal is Diode laser which is US FDA approved for treating any body area in both men and women, for all skin types. Laser uses collimated beams of light which selectively target the follicular cells (these are present at the base of hair follicle).Once follicular cells absorb light energy they are permanently destroyed, resulting in permanent hair reduction. Most of the patients need six to eight effective treatment sessions spaced at few weeks apart. Since, hair grows in cycles, several sessions are required to affect all the hair in a given area. Hair growth varies over body parts. Facial hair requires more frequent sittings as compared to arms and legs. The treatment sessions are scheduled four to six weeks apart so that the maximum number of hair in growth cycle (anagen) phase are targeted to get substantial results. The laser technique is felt as a mild heat as in a massage. The patients are very comfortable and at ease as compared to painful, expensive, time consuming waxing or threading. Any body part (chin, upper-lips, cheeks, neck, chest, arms and legs) can be treated. The whole body laser requires three hours. The average experience shows 70 to 80 per cent reduction in hair after six to eight sessions. Slight redness, burning sensation, swelling are seen post laser but that is temporary and subsides within hours. The patient can apply ice cubes to reduce the burning sensation. A broad spectrum sunscreen (UVA, UVB blocker) must be applied post laser to prevent hyper
pigmentation. (Dr Kaur is a Chandigarh-based dermatologist)

Please let me in, bro!
Parvesh Rana I am a 24-year-old basketball player. These days my elder brother (30) is avoiding me. He doesn't take me along to any parties. He doesn't even let me come to his room when his friends are over. Why would he be doing this? Mohit Sood, Panchkula Your brother is not avoiding you. This is nothing but simple age difference between you that is making you think like this. He is not sure whether you will like it in his group of friends, you might feel a misfit. If you want to hang out with him, why don't you talk to him and sort it out! I am a 27-year-old woman. I have recently joined a new organisation. I am pretty friendly with people but I am having a problem in getting along with my colleagues. I don't know why I have this hitch to approach them. Do you think my behaviour is weird? Surbhi Sharma, Chandigarh I don't see anything weird in this, we all face problems in a new set up, it is pretty normal. Don't judge yourself. Just be yourself and talk to others around. Cool seduction
Kandla Nijhowne The sun god is showering us, not with warm blessings but with blazing hot blessings. It has been a beastly spell of heat , making us all miserably grilled. We seek air conditioning like it were our birthright! So, do our pets. The food we seek is also what cools us from within. A glassful of a smoothie, chock-a-block full of goodness is the coolest seduction that comes to my mind. It takes simple ingredients from your fridge and the fruit bowl and blends them with the goodness of honey and lemon juice. In some health bars, they offer smoothies with the additional benefit of flax seed powder, whey protein, soy milk and even green tea. Make a smoothie according to you fruit preference and experiment with a pinch of cinnamon one day and rock salt. Watermelon, strawberry & peach smoothie Ingredients 1 cup strawberries 3 cups chopped watermelon 2 peaches 200 gm yogurt Honey or powdered sugar to taste (optional) Ice cubes Method
Mango and banana smoothie Ingredients 2 cups chopped bananas 2 cups chopped mango 150-200 gm yogurt Sugar or honey to taste A pinch of cinnamon Ice cubes Method

Sajid Khan: I’m at peace now
Humshakals has got terrible reviews but the movie got a good opening. Sajid Khan talks about the response to his movie and much more.
Audience and critics Last week, I was anxious about how the audience would react to Humshakals. I am at peace now because the movie has done well during its opening weekend. I was not able to please the critics but for me, the audience is the king because I make films to entertain people. Business of comedy I like mixed comedy. Sometimes, I laugh at intelligent jokes and sometimes at silly and goofy ones. I don't endorse sexual or double meaning humour. Marriage and all that I am not anti-marriage. I am 42 now but I can behave like a sixty year old or an eighteen year old. I am looking for the right-minded woman who loves movies. She does not have to like my movies but we have to be tolerant of each other. Lessons learnt I have learnt to laugh at myself. I am quite outspoken and that has worked against me a little. I am okay with people making fun of me as I poke fun at myself too along with making fun of others. I want to entertain people for the time they are in theatres.
