Modi doesn’t feature on BJP website’s MP list
Lucknow, June 28 While there is nothing wrong with the home page - www.bjp.org - the problem lies in the list of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members. Indeed, if this list is to be believed, Modi is not even an MP while deceased leaders like Gopinath Munde and Dilip Singh Judeo represent the party in the Lok Sabha. A beaming picture of Vidisha MP and external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj greets you on the Lok Sabha page — www.bjpinloksabha.com/index.php — as the leader of opposition. The situation is no better on the Rajya Sabha page (bjpinrajyasabha.org) where now finance and defence Minister Arun Jaitley is listed as a mere MP. Both sites are linked to the BJP's official website. In the Lok Sabha page, Lalji Tandon is described as the Lucknow MP although the Uttar Pradesh capital is now represented in the Lok Sabha by BJP president Rajnath Singh. Dilip Singh Judeo, elected to the last Lok Sabha from Bilaspur in Madhya Pradesh and who died in August 2013, figures as a party MP. Modi's cabinet colleague Gopinath Munde, who died in a car crash, still figures as the MP from Beed in Maharashtra. Expelled party leader Jaswant Singh, who rebelled in the run up to the 16th Lok Sabha election, is listed as the MP from Barmer, a constituency in Rajasthan now represented by Sona Ram, who defected from the Congress. Modi, who steered the BJP to its highest ever tally in the Lok Sabha, figures nowhere in the Lok Sabha section! And Murli Manohar Joshi is the MP from Varanasi, which elected Modi to the Lok Sabha. The Lok Sabha section lists Ramakant Yadav as the MP from Azamgarh, now held by SP chief Mulayam Singh

Art work put up for auction is fake, say experts
New Delhi, June 28 While the auctioneer and the leading families of the country from whose treasures some of these works of art emerged claim to have the “genuine certification” for these pieces of art. Some of the Kolkata-based artists, historians, painters, lecturers and art connoisseurs have written to President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi pointing out that the works of art put up for auction were not authentic. While reports suggested that several of the 86 lots remained unsold and most other works went to phone bidders at the bidding held behind closed doors yesterday. Artists from Kolkata have said the paintings of Rabindranath Tagore, Hemen Majumdar and Bikash Bhattacharya, which went under the hammer, were of "dubious nature". The signatories of the letters to the President and the PM have referred to the fake Tagore painting scandal by Government College of Arts and Crafts in 2011, whilst making an effort to draw their attention to the rampant auction of fake paintings of several noted painters. The reason for the controversy erupting is that some of the works, which came up for auction, actually have similar works lying elsewhere. Rabindranath Tagore's pen and ink of three dancing figures, titled Nritya dated back to 1933, which was part of the auction, also lies in the vaults of Visva Bharati in Shantiniketan. The Bangalore-based auction house has stated that Rabindranath Tagore's 'Nritya' has been authenticated by Professor Ratan Parimoo, a noted art historian and painter. The auction house has termed the reports "unsubstantiated, unverified and malicious". |

Pipeline fire: Toll reaches 17, GAIL faces negligence charge
Nagaram (AP), June 28 Two persons, including a girl, succumbed to injuries today. The condition of five among the 20 injured who have received around 80 per cent burns remains critical, police said. “A four-year-old girl and a man died today at a private hospital in Kakinada. With this the toll has risen to 17,” East Godavari District Superintendent of Police G Vijay Kumar said. The massive blaze started early yesterday morning, apparently after leaked gas from the pipeline got ignited when a tea vendor lighted his stove. Gigantic flames scorched houses, coconut palms and everything else in a 1.5 km radius. A case was today registered against the Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL), after examining eye-witnesses, recording statements of victims’ relatives and based on preliminary investigation, a police officer said. Several villagers have alleged that they had complained about foul smell of gas emanating from leaks in the pipeline, but no repair was undertaken by the company. The case was registered under sections 304 A (causing death by negligence), 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 286 (negligent conduct with respect to explosive substance) of the Indian Penal Code, the senior police officer said. Meanwhile, a Centre-appointed committee today started a separate probe after inspecting the site of tragedy.

Unable to pay fine, 16 private polytechnic colleges disaffiliated in Himachal Kangra/Dharamsala, June 28 Addressing a press conference, Minister for Technical Education, Food and Civil Supplies and Transport GS Bali today said these colleges were disaffiliated under 13-5(B) of the Board Act as they did not abide by the Technical Education Board Regulations and deposit the penalty amount. He said the board imposed a fine of Rs 2,93,85,500 on 21 state polytechnic colleges for violating the provisions of the board. He said five polytechnics deposited the fine. The rest got relief from the court which reduced the fine to 50 per cent (a total of Rs 1,35,12,000 from 16 colleges), but they failed to deposit the amount. Last year, the board imposed a fine on 21 state polytechnics which had admitted students who did not take the Polytechnic Examination Test. Later, 16 colleges moved the high court against the board’s decision. The Himachal High Court reduced the fine to 50 per cent and ordered the colleges to deposit the fine amount within 15 days. However, the colleges moved the Supreme Court against the decision of the Himachal High Court. Bali said despite repeated reminders, the colleges did not respond to implement the court decision, thus the board decided to withdraw their affiliation on June 26. About the fate of students studying in these colleges, he said it was the moral duty of the management of these colleges to save their future and the students were free to take to the legal recourse. He said the colleges also violated the board norm which states that a student need to clear 50 per cent theory papers for the admission to the next class. He said the government was also contemplating action against principals of these polytechnics. Meanwhile, an association of private technical institutes conducted a meeting at Dharamsala to discuss the issue. They said they had informed the state government about their decision to move the Supreme Court, so the disaffiliation was unwarranted. Some of the colleges were contemplating to deposit the fine, while others may hold a dharna against the board in front of the Shimla Secretariat. Struck off the list Gautam Girls Polytechnic, Hamirpur Devasya Women Polytechnic, Hamirpur KC Polytechnic, Pandoga Dev Bhoomi Polytechnic, Haroli Shivalik Polytechnic, Badhera, Una Dreams Polytechnic, Sundernagar Shirda Polytechnic, Kaned Himalayan Polytechnic, Kala Amb LR Polytechnic, Jabli, Solan, Natraj Polytechnic, Rajwani, Mandi, AIT Polytechnic, Nalagarh, Vaishno Polytechnic, Thapkour Bell’s Polytechnic, Shimla Abhilashi Polytechnic, Mandi. It’s official: DU scraps FYUP
New Delhi, June 28 The resolution was passed by a majority with eight council members dissenting among 90 present. The dissenting members said DU did not consult them on the rollback of FYUP. DU Vice-Chancellor yesterday exercised his emergency powers to tell the UGC that he would scrap the FYUP as demanded by the UGC, which has termed the programme illegal as it did not have the Visitor’s approval. Under the Delhi University Act – the Act of Parliament by which DU, a central university, was created in 1922, any decisions related to courses need to be passed in three statutory bodies – Academic Council, Executive Council and University Court. Thereafter, they are to be sent to the HRD Ministry. Under this process, the FYUP rollback cleared the first step today with the Academic Council’s approval. It will now go to the Executive Council for passage before being officially notified. Meanwhile, the 16-member committee set up by the DU Vice Chancellor yesterday to devise the course of action (ensure B Tech students admitted in FYUP last year do not suffer etc) also started its work today. Iraq watch: 2 more warships dispatched to Persian Gulf
New Delhi, June 28 Most of the Indians are living in areas controlled by the elected dispensation that is recognised by India. So far, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) militia have not captured key cities such as Baghdad, Karbala, Najaf or Basra. The issue of “starting evacuation of Indians in Iraq” was discussed at a meeting of the National Crisis Management Committee (NCMS) yesterday, sources told The Tribune. It was decided that a final call would be taken after seeing how the situation develops. The NCMC headed by Cabinet Secretary Ajit Seth met the three Service Chiefs yesterday and discussed various options. It asked the entire western fleet of the Navy headquartered at Mumbai to be on “readiness”. It has more than 50 ships in the fleet and about half-a-dozen are enough to bring back Indians safely. One of the contingency plans is to ferry Indian nationals by road to neighbouring countries such as Kuwait for onward evacuation. Sources said the Indian Navy was today told to divert its frigate INS Tarkash, which carries BrahMos super-sonic missiles, to the Persian Gulf. The warship was currently deployed close to the Persian Gulf and tasked with anti-piracy patrol duties with an international fleet. It will join Delhi-class destroyer INS Mysore, which docked at a port of a friendly country this evening and is now located just an hour’s sail away from the Iraqi port city of Basra. The 6,200-tonne warship is stocked with food, water and rations and has Sea King helicopters on board. “The INS Mysore has been sent as a morale-booster for the Indian nationals and show India’s readiness for a mass evacuation, if needed,” a source said, adding that another Delhi-class destroyer, INS Mumbai, was despatched today from its base in India and will be positioned in the Persian Gulf. If people are evacuated on these ships, a fleet tanker is ready and will replenish supplies mid-sea. A fleet tanker is like a floating supply ship. Typically, it can carry 15,500 tonnes of liquid cargo (fuel and water) that can be used to refuel warships while they are at sea — cutting down on lengthy process for warships to dock at a port for replenishment. The ship can also carry 500 tonnes of solid cargo that can be a combination of dry provisions. It can also load cargo containers on its upper deck. India had evacuated nearly 5,000 nationals from Lebanon in 2006. During the Gulf War in 1990, it evacuated a record 1,11,711 nationals from Kuwait, Iraq and Jordan by operating 488 flights over 59 days. Evacuation plan

Rahul lacks ruling temperament, says Digvijay
New Delhi, June 28 In an interview to a news channel, Digvijay, considered close to Rahul, said the party vice-chief should have accepted the responsibility of leading the Congress in the Lok Sabha elections and later leading the party in the House.“Rahul Gandhi does not have a temperament suited to the ruling benches,” Digvijay said at a time when Congress president Sonia Gandhi has asked an informal group headed by AK Antony to assess reasons for the party’s recent rout. “Rahul is by temperament not a ruling person. He is by temperament someone who wants to fight injustice,” the Congress leader said. Digvijay had recently said Rahul should lead the party in the LS. The role later was assigned to senior Congress leader from Karnataka Mallikarjun Kharge. Rahul had expressed his unwillingness to assume the leadership charge and had instead opted to work for the party organisation. His statement comes at a time when several Congress leaders are questioning the leadership abilities of Rahul, whom the party had projected as the face of its campaign. |

Surajkund (Faridabad), June 28 Sushma, who spoke in the post-lunch session, said it was the ‘Question Hour’ that could test the calibre and competency of an MP as it provides both a platform and opportunity for one to raise issues that were really important from the point of view of a constituency or segment. Tap renewable energy sources, says Pachauri
New Delhi, June 28 Delivering the third “United Nations Public Lecture” on “Climate change and sustainable energy for all” here, Pachauri said energy was the engine of growth. But the production and usage of energy generated through conventional source had concomitant byproducts in the form of green house gas (GHG) emissions. “Warming of climatic system is unequivocal. Atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide has increased to unprecedented level in the past eight lakh years,” Pachauri said. He said over 30 per cent of the emitted anthropogenic carbon dioxide had been absorbed by the oceans causing their acidification. Highlighting the negative impact of climatic change, Pachauri said that the total man-made GHG emitted had continued to increase over 1970 to 2010 (highest in human history). Apart from stressing usage of renewable source of energy, especially solar, he urged for planned development which was “sustainable”. Pachauri, who heads the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), emphasised on de-carbonisation of electricity generation. United Nations Resident Coordinator Lisse Grande said energy had to be made accessible, available and affordable for all people, especially the poor. |
Intellectuals reject majoritarianism
New Delhi, June 28 “The bedrock of the Indian republic is the promise that all its citizens can find space to practice their beliefs and cultures and live freely and they will be equally protected by the law of the land... Unfortunately, not everyone shares this idea of India. There is another idea of India, an idea of majoritarian domination, which is alien to the social and political philosophy on which this country was built and consolidated,'' a joint appeal issued today said. They say the other idea leads to riots, polarisation and withdrawal of the state from public expenditure on health, education and nutrition in favour of large subsidies to the private sector, weakening of labour and environmental protections and the theft of natural resources in the name of development. And to enable all of this, a curbing of freedom so people can be told what to think, read, write, say and paint. The signatories to the appeal include Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Anand Patwardhan, Balachander Mungekar, Githa Hariharan, Girish Karnad, Harsh Mander, Indira Jaisingh, John Dayal, Kancha Illiah, K Sachitanand, KN Pannikar, Kolse Patil Mahesh Bhatt, Mallika Sarabhai, Nandita Das, Nayantara Sahgal, Prabhat Patnaik, Prabir Purkayastha, Ram Puniyani, Romila Thapar, Rooprekha Verma, Saeed Mirza, Seema Mustafa, Shabnam Hashmi, SP Shukla, Syeda Hameed, Vivan Sundaram and Zaheeruddin Ali Khan. |
